STUDENT-ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT (updated summer 2017) Each student-athlete at Silver Lake College is a representative of the College, the Athletics Department and the greater Manitowoc community. As a member of a Silver Lake College athletic team, each student-athlete holds a status of high visibility to the campus, community, alumni and all patrons associated with the College. With this recognition and opportunity comes the added responsibility of being a student-athlete. As a part of Silver Lake College, you must behave in a socially responsible and acceptable manner. The Silver Lake College Athletics Department adheres to a philosophy of personal responsibility for student-athletes conduct on and off campus. The College and the Athletics Department seek to maintain high standards of behavior for the student-athletes and apply disciplinary policies in a consistent and equitable manner. Student-athletes, coaches and other Silver Lake College officials are expected to report violations to the Athletics Director. The Silver Lake College Student-Athlete Code of Conduct further defines expectations of the student-athlete. You are to abide by all conditions defined in the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct. As an adult who is pursuing a quality education, you are expected to: Act with common decency and respect for others rights and property Be honest in your academic work and all other campus and community activities Abide by all local, state and federal laws Behave in a socially responsible and acceptable manner at all times Exhibit good sportsmanship (ie, trash talk will not be tolerated) The following activities may lead to disciplinary action and possible dismissal from the team and/or residence hall and/or College, as determined by the Athletics Director and other College administrative personnel: Conviction of a crime or misconduct of any type that is an infraction of the established laws of the city, county, state or nation Possession of stolen articles or stealing College equipment or supplies Malicious destruction of property, unlawful entry or unauthorized use of College facilities Life endangerment or threats of physical safety to others or self, including bullying or hazing

Prejudicial student conduct, on or off campus Disrespect of authority toward coaching staff, faculty, institution staff or administration Conduct that disrupts, impedes or interferes with the operation of any college function Conduct that infringes upon or invades the rights of others Academic dishonesty Any improper display or use of social networking providers including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, texting, etc. The unlawful use or possession of alcohol or illicit drugs on campus or at college-sponsored activities The unauthorized use of prescription drugs or performance-enhancing drugs Violation of conditions of probation (including academic) by a student while on campus or while involved in college activities Possession of firearms or weapons on campus Violation of individual sport training rules Unexcused absences from classes Any activity which would be a breach of standards held by the College administration The Athletics Department will support all actions and sanctions for inappropriate behavior administered by other administrative campus personnel. Dismissal from a team may result in one, or all, of the following: The loss of institutional athletic scholarship Removal from student housing without refund The student-athlete is no longer allowed to participate in College-sponsored athletics Training rules Student-athletes are expected to exhibit self-discipline and a positive attitude. In addition, you are expected to get proper rest, nutrition and care for your body. A commitment to these characteristics indicates a commitment to yourself and your team, as well as Silver Lake College and its Athletics Department. Academics Silver Lake College student-athletes will approach their academic goals with equal or greater intensity than the athletic goals they strive to meet. Student-athletes are responsible to meet with instructors prior to official absences to prepare for any missed work. To participate in athletics, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA and remain in good academic standing with the college. Attending all classes is a necessary component of being a student-athlete. Student-athletes may not miss class for practices, but they are excused from class for a scheduled athletic contest.

Procedures for reporting any breach of Code of Conduct and/or team training rules A report will be filled out by the head coach of the sport in which a student-athlete has been in violation (one report for each student-athlete, in the event of multiple student-athletes involved in the same incident), and that report(s) will be submitted (in person or via ) to the Athletics Director within two working days after the coach has been made aware of the incident. If necessary, the report will be forwarded to other campus personnel. A copy of the report will be submitted to the Title IX Coordinator for any further investigation of violations per the College s Title IX policy. Alcohol-related sanctions These sanctions are minimums and cover the entire academic year. Violations occurring after the completion of the academic year will have sanctions levied for any following year(s) of eligibility remaining for the student-athlete. Each case will be reviewed on an individual basis. Sanctions will not be at the coach s discretion, although coaches may offer input to the Athletics Director. The final say on sanctions rests with the Athletics Director, who may increase the severity of the sanctions listed in this document depending on the nature of the infraction. As a member of a Silver Lake College athletics team: No student-athletes are permitted to drink alcohol anywhere on the Silver Lake College campus Student-athletes younger than age 21 are not permitted to drink alcohol at any time yearround, on or off campus Student-athletes age 21 and older are not permitted to drink alcohol (neither on campus nor off campus, including road trips) during the sports season in which they are participating (starting with that team s first practice of the season and continuing until the end of the last game of that team s season). Silver Lake College believes it is important that team members all abide by the same guidelines (i.e., ages 21 and older shouldn t have a different set of rules than ages 20 and younger during the season). Also, this policy aligns with Silver Lake College s training rules, which state that student-athletes are expected to get proper rest, nutrition and care for your body. The consumption of alcohol, especially during the season, would contradict those training rules. At no time shall student-athletes age 21 or older purchase or provide alcohol to underage students Athletics Department-related sanctions for impaired driving-related violations (as relating to alcohol, drugs, etc.) while a member of any Silver Lake College athletic team will be the same as sanctions imposed to student-athletes who are determined to have been using illegal drugs and/or abusing prescription drugs (please refer to the Silver Lake College drug-testing sanctions). Athletics Department-related sanctions for alcohol-related violations (other than DUI) while a member of any Silver Lake College athletic team include (the Athletics Department will round up when it comes to decimal points in the factoring of percentage of contests missed):

First offense Suspension for 10 percent of the total contests during that specific sports season (for example, if there are 30 games in a basketball season, the suspension will be for 3 games, regardless at which point in the season the violation occurred). If a student-athlete participates in one sport at Silver Lake College, the sanction will carry over to the next year s season if necessary. If a student-athlete participates in more than one sport at Silver Lake College, the sanction will carry over into the next season s sport in which he/she participates. The student-athlete may practice with the team and attend contests while suspended, but they are not allowed to wear team uniforms. Any sanctions issued through the legal system and college conduct system, where applicable Second offense Suspension for 25 percent of the total contests during that particular sport s season. If a student-athlete participates in one sport at Silver Lake College, the sanction will carry over to the next year s season if needed. If a student-athlete participates in more than one sport at Silver Lake College, the sanction will carry over into the next season s sport in which he/she participates. The student-athlete may practice with the team and attend contests while suspended, but they are not allowed to wear team uniforms. Any sanctions issued through the legal system and college conduct system, where applicable Third offense Suspension for 50 percent of the total contests during that particular sport s season. Any sanctions issued through the legal system Fourth offense The student-athlete will be ineligible to further participate in intercollegiate athletics at Silver Lake College and will lose their athletic scholarship Any sanctions issued through the legal system and college conduct system, where applicable Felonies, Assaults, Sexual Misconduct The student-athlete will be suspended immediately until the case has gone through Campus Security, the Title IX Coordinator and the criminal justice system, as applicable. If it is deemed that a studentathlete has committed one of these crimes, they will no longer be able to compete in intercollegiate athletics at Silver Lake College, and they will lose their athletic scholarship. Student-athletes in the vicinity of aforementioned situations who are encouraging and/or supporting those criminal actions or do not intervene or attempt to contact Campus Security or law enforcement may also face

sanctions. It is the responsibility of Silver Lake College student-athletes to hold themselves to a high standard of conduct. Infractions not specifically addressed in this Code of Conduct will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the Athletics Director (in conjunction with the head coach and/or other campus personnel, if needed), and sanctions will be imposed accordingly. The Athletics Director will refer to precedents (when applicable) in other similar situations when determining sanctions. Transfer students Student-athletes transferring to Silver Lake College from another institution may have to finish serving sanctions imposed by their previous institution. Those cases will be handled individually by the Athletics Director (in conjunction with the head coach and/or other campus personnel, if needed). Electronic communications Sanctions for violating social networking guidelines will be handled by the Athletics Director on a case-by-case basis. The words, photos, videos, links, etc. that you post/like/share on social media are not only a reflection of you, but the Silver Lake College community as well. These guidelines include, but are not limited to: Remember that all information appearing in your accounts (personal data, photos, etc.) are published to the Internet and can, in many instances, be accessed and/or shared by anyone else with a computer Do not post anything that could be considered a threat to anyone or contains content (drugs, alcohol, nudity, obscenity, etc.) that are contrary to the values of Silver Lake College. Do not reference or discuss personal issues regarding your team, teammates, coaches or Athletics Department. Do not trash talk or post disrespectful comments aimed at opponents. Report any problems or concerns to coaches or the Athletics Director. Student-Athlete Code of Conduct Agreement All student-athletes will carefully read the Silver Lake College Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and the Silver Lake College Drug-Testing Policy. The following page is the Student-Athlete Agreement. A student-athlete must sign the agreement to participate in any sport(s) at Silver Lake College.

Agree to have photos/videos of me distributed to media outlets and/or included on the College and athletic websites (and/or College promotional materials). A student-athlete must read, understand and abide by the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and General Policies and Regulations as published in the Undergraduate Student Handbook A student-athlete will meet the following expectations: a.
