Good Monday Morning, February 6 th, Here we go everyone. Today is the launch of the Spring 2017 semester, the first day of Go Week. We are welcoming both new and continuing students as they begin the latest chapter in their educational pathway. In some cases, this will be their first college experience or maybe their first experience at LATTC. As always, the success of all our students is all of our work. This week, offer that Trade Tech hospitality and give every student a friendly smile. It makes a real difference in keeping these students engaged. If they have any enrollment questions that you cannot answer, you can always direct them to the Bridges to Success Center in Magnolia Hall, Room 105. Tell them to simply follow the newly painted purple and red lines from all over campus to this destination. Please welcome all students that are being referred to you to add. On Saturday, Bridges held a successful Enrollment Fair with lines almost out the door. One part of our enrollment effort in response to the Mayor s Office was our work with thousands of American Apparel workers who were abruptly left without jobs when the company closed its plant over at 7 th and Alameda. Last week, in addition to outreach at several gatherings, former American Apparel workers stopped by the Work Source Center to meet with several local employers and to sign up for our evening ALAS classes. Click the link for the story on Univision and test your Spanish. On Thursday evening, Chancellor Rodriguez joined the inaugural group of ALAS students in the cafeteria as we continue to build our evening ALAS cohort with content in Spanish and related ESL classes. With the expansion of noncredit Adult Ed classes, we were able to grow our combined credit/non-credit enrollment in Winter Session this year over last year. But like most colleges, we still have a lot more to go for our Spring enrollment.

Officially, 1,995 high school and college students from across Southern California joined in the regional championships of the Skills USA competition right here on campus this past Saturday. LATTC students competed in several categories against other college campuses and did very well. There were competitions in electronics, computer design, construction areas, welding, transportation, cosmetology and culinary arts along with several others. Many of the contests were coordinated by our faculty, donating their time and talents. Our team led by Dean Dimitrios Synodinos created a great environment for the student competitors, and made for a truly successful event. We will have more on the winners this week but you can click the link below for additional photos of this great event. A special thank you to our faculty advisors who have worked tirelessly with our students to make this a special event.

This past week, we held a successful health careers job fair put together by the folks in LAH3C. We had 20 employers on campus talking with students

about current job openings and career paths. Dozens of students came by with their resumes to get hired. Thank you to Dean Michelle Cheang and her team for making this happen for our students. Some additional attention was given to our Culinary Arts and Professional Baking programs this past week. College Rank is an independent outfit that puts together lists for prospective college students, comparing programs around the country. College Rank listed LATTC in the top 20 Culinary Schools in America, among the hundreds in the running. Congratulations to Chef Steve Kasmar and his faculty and staff for continuing to build a tremendous program. Here s an excerpt from the ranking list and what the website said about us.

UPCOMING EVENTS This Saturday we will be hosting My Brothers Keeper Youth Summit here on campus. This organization supports young men of color to make healthy choices in their lives. The young men will get a chance to take part in workshops designed to give them the tools to help them be successful in life, and some will sign up to attend classes here at LATTC.

Also on Saturday, LATTC will have a team at the Black College Expo being held at the LA Convention Center. This is the fifth straight year we will attend and will outreach to prospective students about the programs we have on campus. Contact David Ysais if you are willing to volunteer to help out on this outreach effort. Also on Saturday, from 12-4 pm, Wally Hanley s family will be hosting an informal memorial for Wally Hanley. The campus is invited, but Wally s former wife Stacy is asking that folks RSVP. I know many of you are missing Wally, and

this will be a time to support his family and share stories about what a special man he was. Finally, on Thursday, February 23 rd, BFSA is holding their Annual Black History Luncheon. Based on prior times I have heard him speak, Guest Speaker Rev. Mark Whitlock will give us all a jolt of inspiration of which we cannot get enough these days. See the details in the attached flyer and sign up now.

This is a very important week for our students and ourselves. Let s make this semester opening the best ever. Larry Laurence Frank President, LATTC College to Career, It s All Here L.A. Trade-Technical College
