Academic and Student Affairs Committee Intercollegiate Athletics Report on Academic and Student Services INFORMATION ITEM BACKGROUND This is an annual report and presentation to the Board of Regents on ICA s Student- Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) program. The Board was last updated on this topic in November The presentation will provide a brief report of academic progress and benchmarks of University of Washington student-athletes including NCAA Academic Progress Rates, NCAA Graduation Rates, team grade point averages, and individual honors. In addition, current initiatives and programs will be shared. The presentation will focus on the student-athlete academic and athletic experience at UW and four student-athletes will share their stories with the Board. Please note that the most recent Graduate Success Rate (slide 2) was not yet released by the NCAA at the time of printing, and updated rates will be provided to the board at the November 12 th meeting. 3 Graduation & Academic Results Graduation Success Rate: The NCAA measure of graduation rate within a six year window from initial full-time enrollment including transfers. Based on classes entering UW in cohorts. UW All-Sport GSR (85%) 4 th in the Pac-12 (Stanford 98%, UCLA 86%, Colorado 86%) Football (77%) T3rd in Pac-12 (Stanford - 99%, UCLA 89%, Colorado 77%) Men s Basketball (85%) 3 rd in Pac-12 (Utah 90%, Arizona State - 90%) Lowest UW men s teams: Baseball (62%) Men s Golf (67%) Lowest UW women s teams: Softball (93%) Women s Rowing (94%) Updated Page 2
4 Graduation & Academic Results Academic Progress Rate: A team-based metric that accounts for eligibility and retention of each student-athlete each term. Perfect score is A score of 930 or below is considered below the NCAA minimum threshold and subject to NCAA penalty. UW s NCAA Academic Progress Rate 14/20 UW teams were in the top 4 of Pac-12 conference 3 UW teams were #1 in Pac-12 conference (Gymnastics, Women s Indoor Track & Field, Women s Outdoor Track & Field) Perfect 1000 score for Gymnastics (NCAA national recognition) Football (977) is 2 nd in the conference behind Stanford (987) Men s Basketball (984) is 4 th in the conference behind Arizona, Arizona State, and Stanford (all with 1000) All UW teams are above a 965 Academic Progress Rate Lowest teams are Baseball (969) & Football (977) Page 3 of 7

6 Graduation & Academic Results Individual Academic Progress (Spring student-athletes) 121 student-athletes on the Dean s List 4 student-athletes earned a 4.00 gpa 363 student-athletes earned a 3.00 or better (67% of student-athlete population) 2 student-athletes are on Academic Probation 2 student-athletes were dropped from the University Danny Shelton (football) was named First Team Academic All-American Our first in the sport of football in 23 years. 9 University of Washington Student-Athlete Bios FAITH MORRISON GYMNASTICS JUNIOR Faith Morrison is originally from Leesburg, Virginia where she attended Flint High School. She is an English major in the Honors program and aspires to attend law school. Faith currently serves as the President of the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Council (WSAAC), our student-athlete leadership group. Recently, Faith represented the University of Washington as a member of the Pac-12 Council comprised of senior athletics administrators and Faculty Athletics Representatives from each school voting on Pac-12 matters and NCAA legislation. Faith originally came to UW as a walk-on student-athlete paying her own way to attend and compete. Since that time, Faith has earned a scholarship and is a leader on the gymnastics team. DERRICK DAIGRE MEN S TRACK & FIELD SENIOR Derrick Daigre is originally from Kent, Washington where he attended Kent-Meridian High School. He is a senior member of our men s track & field team and recognized as one of the top distance runners in the nation at 800 meters. He is a Communication major and has served as the Vice President of the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Council (WSAAC). Derrick is the 2014 Pac meter champion and a First-Team All-American and represented UW in the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships and USA Outdoor Championships. A 8.2/ ATTACHMENT 2
10 CASEY STANGEL SOFTBALL JUNIOR Casey Stangel is a junior pitcher on our softball team who originally started her collegiate career at the University of Missouri. Originally from Coeur d Alene, Idaho, Casey was selected as the three-time Gatorade Idaho Softball Player of the Year and the 2013 National High School Softball Player of the Year. She is majoring in Communication and made the Dean s List in spring 2015 while in season. She earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors as she started 51 games for the Huskies. JUSTIN SCHMIDT MEN S SOCCER REDSHIRT JUNIOR Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Justin Schmidt is a redshirt junior center back for the UW men s soccer team. Justin has been a two year starter for the Huskies and is known for his game-winning goals! He is a Business Administration Marketing major in the Foster School of Business and has served in WSAAC leadership positions since his freshman year. He has been recognized as a member of both the All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention team and earned Second Team Academic All-Pac-12 honors. A 8.2/211-15
