Mr. A congratulates 8th grade student, Samara Means, on her STAR award medallion at the reception held after the ceremony on 2/15 in the NMS cafeteria. Congratulations to ALL NMS STAR award winners. Well done and keep up the good work. As part of the Rachel s Challenge program, students at the middle school participate in First Five activities every day. One of these activities asks students to write letters to thank and appreciate different people in their lives. Sometimes the person who received the students letters writes back with their own notes of encouragement and gratitude. Pictured here is Ms. McLaughlin and her class showing off the notes they recently received. Miss Jenn from York Waste Management presented a learning opportunity for 2nd Graders at York Haven. Students learned about renewable verses nonrenewable natural resources. Miss Jenn presented how York Waste Management uses everyday garbage to make electricity. Students learned this process and had opportunities to ask a variety of questions.
This week NMS celebrated their second marking period Star Awards students!
SFI Bobcats have been spending time in the library conducting research using the Popcorn Research Method. Not only have they hit the books to dig out the facts, they actually got to eat popcorn as well! Popcorn plus researching equals learning and fun at SFI! Educators and community members from across the county gathered to analyze District level PAYS data. The Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) is conducted every other year, in the fall of odd numbered years to 6th, 8th,10th and12th grade and assesses students' responses to pro-social and anti-social behaviors. As part of the York County Communities That Care (YCCTC), which Dr. Kathy Minnich leads, 4 districts were invited to NESD to delve into their District level data, analyzing protective and risk factors specific to their communities. This data allows districts to identify strengths and needs relative to topics such as: drug and alcohol use, depression, safety, and community attachment and invest resources in an informed manner. Representatives from York Suburban, Central York, South Western and Northeastern were in attendance. Special appreciation to the NESD team: Kim Neptune, Sally Reed, Anne Katona-Linn, and Dr. Kathy Minnich. Thank you to the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative for the financial support for this work. In the picture: The Central York School District team works together to assess their District 2015 PAYS report.
The Northeastern School District is proud to announce that the following students, Graceann Temple, Ona Sutton, and Rachel McJunkins, were selected to perform in the PMEA Lower District 7 Band Festival held February 10th and 11th at Eastern York High School in Wrightsville, PA. The festival included 135 musicians from throughout Adams, Lancaster, and York Counties. The band was conducted by Dr. F. David Romines from Marywood University in Scranton, PA and included selections by John Mackey, Gustav Holst, and Christopher Nelson. Graceann Temple has successfully auditioned for a seat in the PMEA Region V State Band Festival to be held March 23-25, 2017 at East Stroudsburg Area High School - North in Dingmans Ferry, PA. The festival will include participation by high level musicians from 15 counties in the eastern part of the state. The band will be conducted by Dr. Travis J. Cross, associate professor of music and department vice chair at University of California, Los Angeles. A public concert will be presented on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 3:00pm in the East Stroudsburg Area High School - North Auditorium located at 279 Timberwolf Drive, Dingmans Ferry, PA General admission tickets cost $8.00 and will be available at the door. Conewago Elementary's PTO has held two Family Focus Dinners this school year. In November, Mr. Tom Wysocki from the Lincoln Intermediate Unit shared information about Positive Behavior Systems as it relates to our TRACKS program. In addition, Mr. Wysocki spoke about how families can utilize aspects of PBIS to encourage positive behavior at home. At our most recent Family Focus Dinner, Mrs. Lisa Schmittle from the York County Library System spoke to our parents about how our local library system can be a valuable resource for families to build and continue a love of reading. Mrs. Schmittle also shared information regarding the York Country Library System's Summer Reading program and the importance of reading daily over summer vacation. Students at Mt. Wolf Elementary traveled to a future world where no one plays musical instruments anymore! Detective McSmogg took us on an adventure where everyone learned to "find our instrument and play." Special thanks to the members of the York Symphony Orchestra who were here to play their instruments!
The 5th annual Rockin the Strings concert is being held on Friday, March 3 at 6:30 PM at Northeastern High School. There are over 300 string students in the district participating in the concert. Students are performing a wide variety of music including Twist and Shout, Jump by Van Halen, Radioactive by Imagine Dragons, Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple, music from Ghostbusters, and many more. Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for senior citizens and students. The ticket order form can be found on the Northeastern webpage and it is suggested that tickets be ordered in advance. All ticket sales support the Northeastern strings program. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Johnson at x81034 or at johnsonb@nebobcats.org.
