1 MISSION & SPIRITUALITY Rooted in the mission of Jesus, we are committed as one CSJ family to live and work with inclusive love to bring about unity and reconciliation of all creation and all people with God and with one another. EDUCATION MISSION OF THE SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH Established in 1949 in Hempstead, New York by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, New York, Sacred Heart Academy is a Catholic college-preparatory school whose singular purpose is to educate young women who have strong academic and leadership potential. Sacred Heart Academy empowers young women to make a difference in their communities, professions, the Church and the global world. Students are empowered by academic excellence, which are both an expectation and an aspiration. Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus and steeped in the tradition and spirituality of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the mission of Sacred Heart Academy is to live and witness reconciliation, unity, justice, peace and God s inclusive love. Sacred Heart Academy strives through the highest academic and spiritual standards to prepare, empower, impassion and inspire women leaders who are mindful of the call to work for justice and peace in an increasingly interdependent and connected global community. Passionate and purposeful love of learning is fostered in an environment that is both challenging and nurturing. In an atmosphere of Hospitality, Excellence, Accountability, Respect and Trust, those entrusted to the care of Sacred Heart Academy are encouraged always to lead with heart. SPIRITUALITY We take time as a community to nurture a spiritual life that fosters courage, compassion and commitment and enables us to live out our mission. Each day begins with a prayer reflection and our mission statement. Theology classes often include guided meditations, Scripture readings and prayers for special intentions. An intimate chapel serves as a beautiful respite for private and communal prayer. Every Friday, Liturgy is held at 7:30 a.m. in the chapel. Liturgies are celebrated at the beginning of the school year, Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Joseph s Day, Graduation and other occasions. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available for each student during the Lenten season. During Holy Week, the school community participates in special prayer opportunities, service projects for those in need, a Lenten lunch and presentations commemorating the Life of Christ. Retreats at Sacred Heart Academy are an opportunity for students to withdraw from the normal day-to-day activities to grow in a deeper relationship with God and one another. These days include prayer, presentations and Liturgy in the St. Joseph Renewal Center in Brentwood. Each year, seniors participate in a traditional three day retreat at the Don Bosco Retreat Center in Stony Point, NY. In addition, juniors have the opportunity to participate in an overnight retreat at the same center. The young women at Sacred Heart have the opportunity to participate in additional retreats and workshops with students from other CSJ schools. Each summer, a group of students participate in Notre Dame Vision at the beautiful campus of Notre Dame University. The days provide an opportunity to explore God s love for us and to discern ways for us to respond using our unique gifts and talents. Students give concrete expression to their spiritual life by fulfilling a number of community service opportunities. Students are encouraged to participate in school Liturgies and prayer services as lectors, altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers and sacristans.

2 Extra-Curricular Activities Sacred Heart Academy provides a rich and varied extra-curricular program which completes the high school experience. Apart from the educational preparation, opportunities for collaboration and development of leadership skills are available through participation in after school activities. Here, young women not only expand and apply their known talents, but also develop new ones. While there are several established after-school clubs, students have often proposed and initiated new clubs to address changing interests of the SHA community. Through hard work and dedication participants enjoy a wonderful bonding experience that develops leadership skills, long-lasting friendships, and pride for school and community. Tryouts and participation are open to all grade levels.

Each strand includes courses that are basic to a classical, college-preparatory education, as well as those that are relevant and current for our students as they face a digital and globally focused world culture and job market.
