1 4-H Grows Leaders April 2018 Clover Connection Livestock ID s Due May 15 Livestock identification will be done through 4-H Online ( for Breeding Beef, Bucket Bottle Calves, Horses, Dairy, Dairy Goats, Dogs, non-derby swine and Breeding Sheep. Identification is due by May 15. If you have questions about this process feel free to contact the Clayton County Extension Office. Each 4-H member is responsible for entering their own ID s. Directions and help sheets are at Market sheep, derby swine, and market goats will be entered into the 4honline system by Extension staff. 4-H members should verify all information entered by May H Lock In Rescheduled for Friday, April 27 The Clayton County 4-H Lock-In has been rescheduled for Friday, April 27 starting at 8:00 p.m. thru 8:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28 at the YMCA in Postville. This event is for youth in grades 6, 7 & 8. Preregistration is required. A letter will be sent to all participants prior to the Lock-in. Dear Friends, The 4-H Omelet Brunch & Silent Auction was successful again this year. We served 690 people. A special thank you to those who donated and/or purchased items in the silent auction. We had 64 items donated for the auction by clubs, members, families and 4-H alumni that raised $2768. Extension Week is April Stop by the Extension Office for an ice cream shake from 11:30 am 4:30 pm to celebrate Extension and Outreach in Clayton County. National Volunteer Week is April 15 21, It s a time of year when organizations across the country honor volunteers for their selfless contributions and recognize the irreplaceable impact of their time, energy, and caring all year round. Volunteers are the heart of the 4-H program and we are truly blessed here in Clayton County. Thank you for all you do! 2 State Conference is June Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. Registration fee is $180 and the deadline is June 1. The Clayton County 4-H & Youth Development Committee will be covering the bus costs for Clayton County youth. The Committee will also reimburse member $25 of their registration fee if they attend Conference. The Iowa 4-H Foundation also offers financial assistance for the conference. Deadline is apply for assistance is April 25. For more information visit H Summer Adventure Trip Join 4-H members from Region 4 for 2 days and 1 night of Honoring the PAST, Celebrating the PRESENT, and Building the FUTURE. Youth will be staying overnight in a motel in Ames. The adventure includes stops at the 1913 antique carousel in Story City, Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, James H Andrew Railroad Museum & History Center, Bio-tech lab at Iowa State University, and Birthplace of the 4-H Emblem in Clarion. There will also be swimming, miniature golf, games and more! Open to all 4-H members currently in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades. The trip will be June 7 & 8. Pine Bluff Junior 4-H Camp Go off the grid and enjoy the great outdoors at Pine Bluff 4-H Camp near Decorah! Tube the Upper Iowa River, bunk in primitive cabins, night hike through Pine Bluff Forest, hunt for your food and cook over an open flame, learn first aid, archery, survival skills, and complete camp crafts. This camp is a 2 day, 1 night adventure with new friends, cabin team challenges, games, and so much more! Camp Counselors Needed for Junior Camps 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign 4-H'ers investing in 4-H'ers. This is the essence of the 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign, sponsored each year by the State 4-H Council. The campaign raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. This year the goal is $29,000 with a suggested $3.00 per member donation. Information on the 4-H ers for 4-H campaign was put in the club boxes. Checks should be written to the Iowa 4-H Foundation and are due by May 15 to the county Extension Office. Attention High School students: Do you enjoy working with younger 4-H members to create a positive experience in an outdoor setting? Do you enjoy tubing, hiking, campfires and canoeing? Then being a 4-H camp counselor may be for you. Region 4 is looking for youth counselors to help lead the 4-H camps at Pine Bluff. All camps are 2 days and one night. 3 Time to Order Birds for the Special Broiler Class Calendar of Events April 3 Youth Committee Meeting, Elkader 7:30 pm 6 Clayton County Dairy Banquet, Johnson s 7 Swine Weigh-In, 8:30 11:30 am, Elkader 12 FSQA Training, 6:30 pm, Extension Office 15 County Council Meeting, Elkader, 7:00 pm 17 FSQA Training, 6:30 pm, Extension Office 27 4-H Lock-In, 8:00 pm, YMCA, Postville The Month of APRIL is: Keep America Beautiful Month National Child Abuse Prevention Month National Frog Month National Garden Month National Humor Month National Mathematics Education Month National Poetry Month National Kite Month 2018 FSQA Training Dates All 4-H members planning to exhibit beef, dairy, sheep, swine, goats, bucket bottle calves, poultry or rabbits MUST be Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) certified to be eligible to show at the 2018 county fair and Iowa State Fair. 4 th, 5 th & 6 th graders must attend a training each year. Intermediate and senior members may take a test. Clayton County will be having training on April 12, April 17, and May 15 from 6:30 8:00 pm at the Extension Office in Elkader. Please register one week in advance as space is limited. FSQA training will also be offered at the June 16 Beef Workshop in Edgewood. Testing for intermediate and senior members may be done anytime before June 30. Please contact the Extension Office to set up a testing time. The deadline to order birds for the Special Broiler Project Class is May 1. Order forms are available at the Extension Office and are also posted on our webpage. The broiler project is an opportunity for a 4-H or FFA member to gain valuable experience in raising chicks to broiler-weight through partnership with a local sponsor. The sponsor will buy the chicks and the 4-H/ FFA member raises the chicks and presents the best five birds to the sponsor as payment for the opportunity. 4-H/FFA member is responsible for whatever is necessary to raise the chicks to healthy broiler weight and processing of the birds. SWINE WEIGH-IN IS APRIL 7 The Derby Swine Weigh-In will be Saturday, April 7 at the Elkader School in Elkader from 8:30 11:30 am. All pigs must be farrowed after January 1, 2018 and not weigh more than 60 pounds at the time of the weigh-in. Recommended weights are pounds. Non-Derby Swine Non-derby swine exhibitors should stop by the Extension Office to pick up tags and an identification form. Members must verify that the tags are in place before May 15 by taking a picture of their tagged pigs (tags must be readable) and ing the photos to tamuller@iastate.edu or entering the photo into 4honline. Non-derby swine identification forms and photos MUST be turned into the Extension Office or entered into 4honline by May15 to be eligible to exhibit at this year s fair. State Fair Swine All State Fair swine (both market and breeding swine) will need a DNA punch tag. The cost is $8/pig. Stop by the Extension Office to pick up your tags. Information for each pig (tag #, sex, breed, color, etc.) must be written on 106 ID form or entered online. Identification must be entered online before May 15. 3

4 Hands-On Calving Workshop to be Held May 2 4-H & FFA Dairy project members have an unique opportunity on Wednesday, May 2 from 4:30-5:30 pm at the NICC Dairy Center in Calmar. Frosty, a life-size calving simulator from the ISU vet school clinical skills lab with a fully articulated 70-pound calf and working udder will be available as a teaching tool. Youth will learn from ISU veterinarians about the process of calving, calving challenges, and get to practice delivering calves from Frosty. The registration fee is $5, which includes a snack for participants. Payment will be collected the day of. Participation is limited to the first 30 youth to register. To register, call the Clayton County Extension and Outreach Office at Citizenship Trip 48 youth and adults representing Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, and Howard counties participated in a week-long 4-H Citizenship experience March 39. The Citizenship Regional Focus is a 4-H citizenship program for middle-school and high school youth. 4-H members participated in a two-year program which culminated in a seven-day trip to Springfield, IL, Gettysburg, PA and Washington, D.C. Clayton County chaperones included Candace Moser, Monona; Dan Lane, Elkader; Laurie Wiskus, Edgewood; LeAnn Fenton, Strawberry Point; Matt Gaul, Strawberry Point; Nate Weber, Strawberry Point; Rob Medberry, Volga; and Robert Schilling, Colesburg. New for the 2018 Fair Clover Kid Pet Show A Clover Kid Pet Show will be held following the 4-H & FFA Pet Show on Tuesday, July 31 in the large show arena. Exhibits in this division will be conference judged. Clover Kids will receive a participation ribbon. All animals must be on a leash or confined to some type of container (cage, box) while on the fairgrounds. Cats, dogs and ferrets must have a current rabies vaccination certificate and present the certificate the day of the show. Pets will not be allowed to stay at the fair. Pets will be released following the conclusion of the show. Market Sheep & Goat Weigh-In is May 5 The Market Sheep & Goat Weigh-In will be Saturday, May 5 at the Clayton County Fairgrounds from 9:00 11:30 am. This will also be a site to qualify for the Iowa State Fair. State fair animals will have retinal imaging done. 5 Leader s Corner Required Training Available online The annual Volunteer Training is available online for volunteers who missed the face to face training of 4-H Builds Resilience. Volunteers may access and complete the annual training online via 4H Online. Training must be completed by July 1, It will take approximately 30 minutes to complete the training. Please follow the following steps to complete the training. Step 1: Access the supporting resources and documents on the 4-H website under Volunteer Resources, Annual Training Resources ( The resources for this year s annual leader training support the learning in the training and can be used in your work with youth. Review the resources on the 4-H Volunteer Resources webpage prior to, or following the online training. It may be beneficial to print these resources for use in your work with the youth and also as a resource to share with the youth. Step 2: Access the online annual training of 4-H Builds Resilience via 4H Online, link below as well as step by step instructions. Open a web browser (use Firefox, Safari, or Chrome as IE does not always work) and type in: iowa.4honline.com Login to 4H Online using your family address and login information. Click Continue to Family. Find your name and click Edit on right side by your name. On the top of the page click on the trainings option. Click the Sign up for a training option on the upper right side of screen. View the trainings listed and click Sign up next to the annual training online version Leader Training (4-H Builds Resilience). Click Take the Course to get started. Step 3: Upon completion of the online training be sure to click to receive your certificate! By clicking on the certificate you have verified completion of the course, you can also print or save the certificate. Contact the Extension Office for the required paperwork. First come, first served. NOTE: If you took advantage of the $500/5 year camping spot opportunity last year, you still must request and sign a new contract each year.
