1 November 8, 2017 Minutes The meeting was called to order at 4:32 p.m. Golden Valley Charter Schools Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees 9601 Lake Natoma Avenue Orangevale, CA Roll Call Board Members Present: John Hanafee, Chair, Ally Jakubicka, Vice Chair, G anna Burke, Secretary, Sarah Sullivan, Rhoda Cortez, Becky Page, Tavia Pagan, Tracy Ikemire. Flag Salute/Quote/Moment of Silence Caleb Buckley read the Devotion Virtue Card. Public Comment Tisa Cadway, an Orchard Parent, asked that Board meetings be moved to a later time in the day as it is difficult for working parents to make such an early meeting. She would also like more publication of where the meetings are. Anne Smith, an Orchard parent, read a letter (attached). Michelle Campbell, an Orchard parent, read a letter (attached). Jenny Wroblicky has concerns about the looping policy and would like the ideal to be 1-8. She has concerns about the high turnover rate and would like to offer her services to analyze causes as she works in Human Resources. Afsoun Payvandi, an Orchard parent, read a letter (attached).
2 Golden Valley Charter Schools Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees 9601 Lake Natoma Avenue Orangevale, CA November 11, 2017 Approval of the Minutes The Board voted to approve the October 11, 2017 Regular Meeting Minutes with the following amendment, strike all after paragraph four ending with the child s natural flow of development. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0) Finance Committee Caleb Buckley presented items of interest to the board. There will be a special meeting on December 6, Parents and teachers have questions about the CO taking responsibility of the fieldtrip payments. Create a Facilities Committee Caleb Buckley presented information on a three-pronged approach to create a new facility. There must be two board members on the committee. The Board appointed members to form a facilities committee. Joanne Ahola, G anna Burke, and Tracy Ikemire will serve on the committee. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0) Appoint Becky Schwartz as a Signatory for the Corporation The Board appointed Becky Schwartz, Student Services Manager, as a signatory for the corporation. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0) Orchard Education Protection Account (EPA) Resolution The Board approved the following EPA resolution for the Orchard School: IT IS RESOLVED that the Education Protection Account funds to be received by the school in FY in the estimated amount of $ 42,306, will be used solely for instructional nonadministrative expenses. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0) River Education Protection Account (EPA) Resolution The Board approved the following EPA resolution for the River School: IT IS RESOLVED that the Education Protection Account funds to be received by the school in FY in the estimated amount of $397,320, will be used solely for instructional non-administrative expenses. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0) Orchard Education Protection Account (EPA) Resolution The Board approved the following EPA resolution for the Orchard School: IT IS RESOLVED that the Education Protection Account funds to be received by the school in FY in the estimated amount of $ 49,210, will be used solely for instructional nonadministrative expenses. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0)
3 November 11, 2017 Golden Valley Charter Schools Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees 9601 Lake Natoma Avenue Orangevale, CA River Education Protection Account (EPA) Resolution The Board approved the following EPA resolution for the River School: IT IS RESOLVED that the Education Protection Account funds to be received by the school in FY in the estimated amount of $365,927, will be used solely for instructional non-administrative expenses. (Ayes: 9, Noes: 0, Abstain: 0) Educator Effectiveness Fund The Board discussed the Educator Effectiveness Fund Plan. Reports The Executive Director, Caleb Buckley, presented items of interest to the board. The Board Chair, John Hanafee, passed on providing a report. Orchard Faculty Chair, Sarah Sullivan, presented items of interest to the board. Barry did the Harvest Picnic. 7 th grade is working with a senior center. We had a successful Eagle Chase. There is a lot of heaviness at Orchard. Teachers are concerned about the changes in the office. We are missing dance. There is no formal Spanish for grades 4-7. There is no leveled math at Orchard. River Faculty Chair, Becky Page, presented items of interest to the board. There was a great festival meeting. Kinder kids and classes were featured in the Carmichael Times. A lot of staff went to the middle school conference. Community Reports Sacramento Charter Families Federation - Tracy Ikemire reported that the group is keeping up on pending legislation. They might start working with an LA group called Speak Up. GVEF Michelle Campbell reported the AGC raised $209K for Projections for are $170K. Eagle Chase raised $25K this year. Closed Session The Board went into closed session to discuss pending litigation at the River school, according to government code Recitation of the Motto of the Social Ethic The healing social life is found When in the mirror of each human soul The whole community finds its reflection, And when, in the community, The virtue of each one is living. The meeting was adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
