4 ORIENTATION DETAILS Orientation Day 1 Blue - Student Sessions Yellow - Family & Guest Sessions Green - Combined Student/Family & Guest Sessions Student Orientation Group Rain Locations Group 1: Waypoint Group 2: 1954 Lecture Hall Group 3: Alumni Lecture Hall Group 4: Harborview 8:00-10:00 a.m. Student and Guest Check-in Alexander Field House Pick up your New Student Orientation packet, get your student ID made, and talk with various departments from around campus, head to the bookstore and move into your room! 10:00-10:30 a.m. Break 10:30-11:00 a.m. Welcome to Maine Maritime Academy Students and their family members will be welcomed to the academy by members of our student orientation staff and academy administration, and will hear an overview of the day s events. 11:00 a.m.-noon Meet your Group Depart from All Student Groups Members of our student orientation staff will meet with you in small groups of students. You will get a chance to meet some of your classmates, go over the orientation schedule and find out what it s all about! Is It Really Time to Say Goodbye? This session offers advice on helping your students make a successful transition to college. Topics covered include tips on how to make those difficult conversations with your student go more smoothly, how to help your student make the transition from dependent at home to independent college student, and issues facing college students today. Even if you have older students in college, this is a session you don t want to miss. Noon-12:55 p.m. Student Lunch Upper level, Alfond Student Center All Student Groups Meet & Greet Family Luncheon Upper level, Alfond Student Center Join other families and guests, faculty and staff for a meal provided by Residential Life and Sodexo. This will be a chance to mix and mingle over lunch and get to know each other. Two tickets are provided free of charge in your folder. Any additional family members or guests will be able to pay $12.00 at the door. 1:00-1:30 p.m. Emergency Action Plan (EAP) Training Emergency Action Plan Training communicates the immediate actions to be taken by the occupants of Academy buildings during an emergency event. Emergency Events may include such incidents as: Fire, Medical, Active Shooter, Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package. At this training students will learn the plan, how to prepare and practice for an emergency event. 4
5 ORIENTATION DETAILS Orientation Day 1 - continued 1:00-1:30 p.m. Breakout Session 1 (choose one to attend) Respect the Anchor: How to Maximize the College Experience 1954 Lecture Hall Representatives from Student Services will speak about the policies and procedures in regards to Honor and Community Code of Conduct. Student Wellness Dismukes 216 Representatives from Health Services, Counseling Services and Dining Services will speak about student mind and body wellness and how their offices can support them while at MMA. The Regiment of Midshipmen Alumni Lecture Hall Join representatives from the Regiment of Midshipmen as they provide a brief overview of the Regiment and its training program. Time will be allowed for questions and answers. 1:40-2:10 p.m. Making the Transition All Student Groups Transitioning from your former life into the college environment can be difficult. But with the assistance from the Student Services staff, anyone can make the grade. This session details the many demands of being a successful student here at Maine Maritime Academy. Tours Tours depart from the front of Curtis Hall. Castine & Campus Tour Join us for a tour of the MMA campus and Castine community! Waterfront & Launch Tour Join us on a tour and learn what our Waterfront has to offer Academy students by way of student involvement and recreation. 4:00-4:50 p.m. Get Acclimated! Nervous about getting lost on the first day of classes? Don t be! Your RAs will walk you around campus to help you get acclimated! Tours Tours depart from the front of Curtis Hall. Castine & Campus Tour Join us for a tour of the MMA campus and Castine community! Waterfront & Launch Tour Join us on a tour and learn what our Waterfront has to offer Academy students by way of student involvement and recreation. 5:00-6:25 p.m. Dinner & Farewell Upper Level, Alfond Student Center The time has come! Students, families & guests meet back up for dinner provided by Residential Life and Sodexo. Students, make sure to take time to say farewell to your family and guests as they depart campus, and you gear up for your evening session and Orientation Block Party! Two tickets are provided free of charge for your family and guests any additional members will be able to pay at the door for $12.00 per person. 6:30-7:30 p.m. Student Panel - All Student Groups New students will have a chance to ask questions and get a current student perspective on any and all questions they may have about life as a Mariner. 7:30-10:00 p.m. Orientation Block Party Alexander Field House- All Student Groups Join us for a live band, obstacle course, soft pretzels, cotton candy and more! 6
