CATHOLIC LENTEN REGULATIONS & PRACTICES Abstinence: Catholics over the age of 14 abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 abstain from meat and limit themselves to one full meal each day. Prayer: Lent is a time of increased prayer in one s life. Traditional practices include Scripture reading, reciting the Stations of the Cross and rising during the night for a prayer vigil. Lent is also an ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for the celebration of Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Almsgiving: The observance of Christ s great sacrifice moves Christians to respond to the needs of their brothers and sisters in a special way during Lent. Many Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking or buying less and relying more on God s abundant grace.
