DATE: February 8, 2017 TO: FROM: RE: Lane Community College Board of Education Dawn DeWolf Vice President, Academic & Student Affairs Highlights that are featured as part of the Board Report ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY: Contact: Patrick O Connor, Dean, Advanced Technology, o connorp@lanecc.edu, 541/ Lane Community College entered the Springfield Christmas Parade last weekend. Titan 3, one of the Diesel Technology buses, was decorated to reinforce the holiday theme titled A Gift of Education. Lane students, faculty, staff and their respective families were involved in this popular local event.

ART & APPLIED DESIGN: Contact: Richard Lubben, Dean, Art & Applied Design, 541/ In Fall Term 2016, the Dance Program had the following highlights: 1. The largest group of dancers yet (20 dancers) were selected by audition for the Lane Dance Company. The Dance Program continues to draw talented and gifted dancers and the faculty and students are busy in rehearsals preparing for their concert, Collaborations 2017, to be held on March 2-4, This past fall term, 23 dancers and 4 dance faculty registered to attend the American College Dance Association event to be held during spring break 2017 at the University of Oregon. Successful fundraising efforts pay registration fees for this most exciting national college dance event of the year. The event includes 3 full days of dance performances, classes, lectures, and discussions. 3. Dance faculty Bonnie Simoa, in collaboration with International Programs Director Jennifer Falzerano, Arts Dean Richard Lubben and Lane Foundation Director Wendy Jett, has spearheaded a program to offer international students scholarships for dance classes. Bonnie Simoa got the idea after attending International Night last May where the student s preferred way of sharing their culture was through dance; a language with the power to connect beyond language or cultural barriers. The Lane dance program is paving the way for more cultural exchanges and connections with international student through dance. 4. An Open Show was held on Tuesday, November 29 th in the Main Theatre. Each dance class performed dances and choreography projects to highlight new skills and gain importance performance experience. Over 100 family and friends attended.

5. The Dance Program is excited to undergo the importance work of Academic Program Review. The Lane Art Gallery has had a very successful Fall Term; hosting 5 great exhibits: 1. Fall Faculty Art Exhibit 2. Art faculty member, J.S. Bird s Sabbatical Exhibition 3. Art faculty member Kathleen Caprario s Solo Exhibition 4. Art faculty members Jan Halvorsen s and Andrea Ciaston s Two-Person Exhibition 5. Diverse Journeys in Art featuring works by Karen Myers, Laree Morgenstern, and Christine Paige. Along with the exhibitions, 4 successful lectures open to students and the public were offered. In addition, the Lane Art Gallery has welcomed over 2100 visitors in the 10 weeks of fall term.

Seastar is a piece that Matt Svoboda (Faculty, Arts), Ian Coronado (Interim Dean, Academic Technology) and Sarah Nemecek (Faculty, Arts) collaborated on. It was the runner up for audience choice at the Northwest Screen dance festival last year, and we also presented it at the Oregon higher education conference on sustainability for Arts presenters. Matt Svoboda connected with Marsh Myers from the Oregon Coast Aquarium to get it to their high school outreach program. It took a while but the video is now up on their website at: Jon Meyers (photography faculty) published his photographs in the attached article in Backpacker s Magazine (see attached). LANGUAGE, LITERATURE & COMMUNICATION: Contact: Susan Carkin, Dean, Language, Literature & Communication, carkins@lanecc.edu, 541/ Eliot Treichel, writing instructor in Lane's English Department, is one of four finalists for the Oregon Book Award in the category of Young Adult Literature. Eliot's book is titled A Series of Small Maneuvers and is published by Ooligan Press. Winners of the Oregon Book Award are notified at the April 24 ceremony. For more information, go to: LIBRARY: Contact: Lori Wamsley, Director, Library, wamsleyl@lanecc.edu, 541/ The Library welcomes Meggie Wright, our new Open Educational Resources (OER) Librarian. Meggie's work will focus on increasing faculty use of OER within their courses and developing faculty and student knowledge of open pedagogy practices at Lane. Her efforts will help to raise enrollment, improve student retention and completion rates, and reduce college costs for students for the next two years. Meggie previously worked as a reference librarian at Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University. SCIENCE: Contact: Paul Ruscher, Dean, Science, ruscherp@lanecc.edu, 541/ Fall term began with the launch of the National Science Foundation-funded course-based undergraduate research experience in several new classes in Science Division. Faculty members Stacey Kiser and Christine Andrews presented first results at the Society for the Advancement of Biological Education Research (SABER)-West meeting at UC Irvine and Dean Paul Ruscher presented results at the Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society in Seattle in

January. Undergraduate students are experiencing authentic research experiences in science classes designed for both majors and non-majors, enhancing their experiential learning opportunities. RAIL NAME Wildest Thru-Hike PHOTOGRAPHY BY JON CHR
