1 August is Rotary Membership and Extension Month Greetings from PHILIP CHONG District Governor Did you know August is Rotary Membership and Extension Month? We think we know what they mean by membership but what is extension? We all know that membership is the lifeblood of Rotary but sometimes it is a challenge knowing the basics of recruiting and retaining members. Recruiting and retaining members is BASIC to the success of all Rotary clubs. Rotary depend on a thriving, vibrant membership. Every club, regardless of size, should have a membership chair and a plan for growing club members. Potential club members are everywhere. But to get them to join Rotary, clubs must use creativity and imagination. Simply put, extension is the creating of new clubs in areas that 1) don't have an existing Rotary club but has the demographics to support a club, or 2) have an existing club or clubs but a new club that meets on a different day, time of day, or meets a different demographic need might be appropriate and successful. Take a look at your community and surrounding communities and consider the possibility of creating a new opportunity for dedicated, caring individuals to join the ranks of Rotary. Another aspect of extension while it is not actually creating a new club is the concept of a satellite. A satellite is a part of an existing club that MAY have a different meeting time and day, place, and meeting format. This concept appeals specifically to young professionals that do not have the time, or finances to belong to an existing club and has proven to be very effective in adding members to an existing club. What is the difference between merely retaining members and ENGAGING them? The difference between retention and engagement is simple: Membership retention refers to keeping members from year to year, while engagement concerns keeping those members involved and excited about your club every day. While both are important elements of any membership development plan, engagement can help you retain members who are active participants. Engaged members have a strong bond with their clubs. They feel connected, valued, and committed to Rotary's work and to achieving their club's objectives. In a nutshell, new members, retention and extension are the most exciting and challenging aspects of Rotary. Success in these areas is a measure of both how Rotary is perceived and also the effectiveness with which clubs make themselves an outward looking, integrated part of the broader community. 1

2 MESSAGE Membership is crucial because without properly manned, vibrant and enthusiastic clubs, Rotary cannot meet its aspirations. If aspirations are not met, disenchantment sets in, existing members are lost and there is no reason for new people to join. This does not need to be the case however. Clubs must engage their full membership in projects thus making the members feel valued and involved. If the existing membership feels positively about its own club then the club becomes automatically of interest to potential new members. As an example, tell someone you think would enjoy and benefit from joining Rotary what it has done for you. Tell your Rotary story. Then bring the person to a Rotary meeting, or, better yet, a Rotary project. Also, have them meet long-time members who joined in their 20s, 30s and 40s. It then begs the question of Why have you stayed in Rotary so long? And seek diversity for everything to include gender, age and colour. Becoming a member of Rotary can change a person's life for the better. So, think about enabling someone to that better life. Act and share Rotary. Yours and their benefit is a good feeling, more members for fellowship and projects, yes, a better world. Every day you can make a difference. Why delay? You can help your members feel engaged by: 1. Publishing a list of members on your club website or bulletin to highlight their Rotary anniversary 2. Publicly thanking members who work on a project 3. Writing a personal note to a member to wish him/her a happy birthday or happy anniversary 4. Asking seasoned members to serve as mentors to new Rotarians 5. Inviting members to join (or chair) a committee 6. Encouraging members to involve their family and friends in service projects 7. Creating weekly programs that are of interest to your members 8. Asking members to help choose the next community service project Retaining current members Keeping current club members is just as important as bringing in new ones. The key is to adapt and change. 1. Make sure club meetings, service activities, and social events are interesting, fun, and worthwhile. 2. Initiate more hands-on projects so club members will feel that they're making a difference. 3. Eliminate 100 percent attendance requirements. 4. Be alert to the symptoms that lead to resignation. Club leaders should be considerate to members' personal problems. To know more on membership engagement and retention, all Rotarians are encouraged to sign up for the District Regional Membership & Public Image Seminar near you. 5th September : Singapore at NUSS Suntec City 12th September : Kluang at Prime City Hotel 19th September : Kota Kinabalu at Wisma Kinsabina 20th September : Tawau at Calvary Crown 3rd October : Kuching at M Hotel In summing up, for Rotary clubs to be relevant and thriving in this challenging and exciting period, she must adapt and change, seek new members, retain current ones and sponsoring new clubs in the community. 2

13 ROTARACT Greetings from JESSEY YAP District Rotaract Representative Dear Rotaractors and Friends, My warmest greetings and peace be with you all at this time of the year where all the Rotaract clubs around the world are busy with the activities in hand. Nonetheless, I am indeed honoured to serve as the District Governor ; truly a priceless opportunity for me. In August, we saw the beginning of an extensive re-connection program for our Rotaract clubs, introduction of new Board of Directors of Rotaract clubs in District 3310 and various overseas community services. Following the installations of the new Board of Directors, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Rotaract Club of Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Singapore West, Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Likas Bay (LB), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Singapore East for your successful installations and utmost commitment to your respective clubs and societies. I am so glad to see good leaders in inspiring their followers to have confidence in them while witnessing great leaders inspiring their followers to have confidence in themselves. Thereafter, in coming months we will see more of these installations of the new Board of Directors from other Rotaract clubs in District In line with our Rotary motto Fellowship Through Service, the 12th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC) 2015 is overwhelmed with joy and the highest quality of intellectual exchange and experience sharing at Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In the near future, I could not agree more in wanting to see the growth and development of these people increase as it is the highest calling of leaders. Rotaract Club of Singapore has always pleasantly surprised us in every possible way for their outstanding spirit in their overseas community services. Lately fourteen (14) of these highly spirited members have successfully carried out Health Screening, Basic Education (Health, First Aid and English language), Community Mapping for a period of nine (9) days at Tanjung Kumbik, Natuna Island. Looking forward to more of such inspiring stories to boost our spirit to work as one for the good of others. As long as Rotaract is in your life, you have a role to play; to Be a gift to the World. Enjoy Rotaract and love humanity! 13

We saw a good turn out from the Rotarians and spouses from the various clubs in Kuching and everyone pitched in to help before and also on the day of the competition. We are very grateful for the Quiz team from the Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway and especially the Quiz master Movin Minerva. We are also very happy with the sponsorship of trophies from Lee Ming Press, and also the Rotary Clubs from Sunway and Kuching who came up with the cash prizes. The winning team is from Lodge International. They and their teacher advisors will be fully sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kuching Central for the finals in Bandar Sunway. 19 FEATURES ROTARY CHILD President Ng Ling Ping Rotary Club of Puteri Lagoon Rotary Club Of Puteri Lagoon Johor Bahru s signature Project is known as Rotary Child There are Two Projects under Rotary Child namely: 1. English Literacy Project - The aim of the project will be to produce children who are able to speak and enjoy English language and to bring them out of poverty through better English Education. 2. Needy Students Project - Providing financial assistance to Primary school students. With the above Rotary Child Project in mind, we have decided to organize a Rotary Child Heritage Ride to be held on 12th September to raise RM500, The above two projects has been ongoing for the pass few years, we started to sponsor : 1. Primary school of SJK(C ) New Kota with approximately 500 students was badly hit twice by massive floods in 2007 and we sponsored the school with tables, chairs and computer hardwares. 2. From June 2007, RC Puteri Lagoon started to sponsored SJK(C) New Kota Primary School with English Conversational Tuition Class for poor students from primary 1 3 to improve their standard of English. 3. On 2012, we started to sponsor another school in Gelang Petah, SJK(C) Ming Terk with English Conversational Tuition Class for all students in Primary 1 & 2. We were being informed that the intake of new students in SJK(C) New Kota Primary School in Kota Tinggi showed significant increase for the pass few years because of the implementation of the English Conversational Tuition Class given to the students from Primary 1 to 3 free of charge. Indirectly we are also helping the school to secure their intake of new students. Kota Tinggi is a town in the state of Johor of Malaysia, located around 42 kilometers north-east of Johor Bahru, on the road to Mersing. 19

20 FEATURES ROTARY CHILD by President Ng Ling Ping English Literacy Project - The aim of the project will be to produce children who are able to speak and enjoy English language and to bring them out of poverty through better English Education With the success story from SJK(C) New Kota Primary and Ming Terk Primary, we have decided to go to other 7 schools in Johor District to spread our seeds for the future of our youngsters. Again, the purpose of the project is to promote the use of oral English language among the primary school children who comes from non English speaking background. The ministry of Education is already providing English language subject as part of the normal education syllabus. However majority of the students who have graduated from primary school are not able to express themselves comfortably in English despite 6 years of formal English lessons. The purpose of this project by the Rotary Club of Puteri Lagoon is to promote the use of English language and not to provide an extra tuition or duplication for the formal English language syllabus. We have also set up Criteria & Accountability: 1) The emphasis of the lessons will be on oral English and not written English. 2) Singing, story-telling and oral reading should be emphasized. 3) An independent teacher NOT from the school should be employed as we do not want a duplication of the English syllabus at these classes. A different fresh approach should be applied. 4) The class will be conducted in the form of kindergarten style a bit at a higher level. Incorporation of such concepts can also be seen in shows like Sesame street and Barney etc. 20

21 FEATURES ROTARY CHILD by President Ng Ling Ping Needy Students Project Providing financial assistance to Primary school students 5) We would have a copy of the general plan for the class for the whole year. We would also have a detail plain of each lesson for the whole month sent to us before the start of the month. 6) Our members will drop by on and off to sit in the class.?7) The external teacher do not have to have a formal teaching qualification. All we ask for is that the teacher is able to converse comfortably in English, loves children, diligent in teaching and ideally have some experience in this area. We want the children to experience a different approach to the English language and look forward to the lessons as a fun time. We hope to raise RM500,000 through "Rotary Child Heritage Ride" to support this English Conversational Tuition Class in 9 primary schools located in Johor District. We have estimated that each year we will need about RM99,000 to support this project for English Conversational Tuition Class in 9 primary schools located in Johor District. Estimated that 1080 students will benefits from this lesson given by Rotary Club Of Puteri Lagoon yearly. Translate to about each student needs RM92.00/year. In order to continue and to sustain this worthy project, we are therefore inviting you to be part of this event. Please log onto to register and participant 21

22 FEATURES MEMBERSHIP NEWS Past President Rajamohan Munisamy Rotary Club of Pandan Valley Dear Fellow Rotarians, Rotary International has designated the month of August as the Membership and Club Extension Month in its Rotary Calendar. We have crossed one month so quickly in this Rotary Year. It is heartening to report that in the month of July, 21 new members were inducted and registered with Rotary International with effect from 1st July This is 7% of the district goal we are aiming for. Well done to the 11 clubs who had given the District a head start to the membership growth and a spring board for other clubs to jump on. The clubs who have set the pace are as follows: Batu Pahat 2 Changi 3 e-club of Singapore 3 Malacca 1 Mersing 2 Puteri Lagoon 1 Sandakan North 1 Shenton 1 Singapore 1 Singapore heartlands 3 Tanjong Pagar 3 The above figures are based on the RI membership report as of today. I am sure there are few more clubs which had inducted members but has not registered with RI in July. RC Singapore West is one of them who had 2 returning members and have not registered with RI yet. At this moment RI has not finalised the 30th June 2015 and 1st July 2015 ending and starting figures respectively. There are various membership reports which does not seem to be synchronised. As such I shall wait until RI update its statistics before giving the membership growth using 1st July 2015 figure as the baseline. Currently our membership stands at I would like to appeal to all clubs to update the RI register immediately when a new member is inducted or terminated. The rules are that you have to update within 30 days of any changes in your membership. 22

23 FEATURES MEMBERSHIP NEWS by Past President Rajamohan Munisamy The District would like to monitor 2 other bio data with regards to the new members which are the gender and age in order to measure the goals for recruiting young Rotarian below 40 years and lady members. As such when you register new members with RI, please provide the date of birth and gender if there is no objection from the member. As August is the month for membership, lets be conscious of our club s membership retention and recruitment. Let s engage our existing members and look out for potential members. Please develop the situation if you see any opportunities to form a Satellite or constitutional club without rocking the boat of your existing club. The membership committee will be more than happy to assist you with the resources and guidance to form a new club. Please look out for the following regional combined Membership and PR seminars which are scheduled in September and October. It would have been ideal to start the seminars in August but unfortunately there are many installations and club anniversaries taking place in August and even in September. The regional membership chairs with the organising clubs are working very hard to deliver the seminars for the benefit of the clubs and members in our District. The seminars shall be tailored to suit the different regions. There will be 4 standard seminars and 2 mini seminars. The schedule are as follows: 5 September in Singapore 12 September in Kluang for clubs in Johor 19 September in Kota Kinabalu for clubs in KK and Labuan 20 September in Tawau for clubs in Tawau and Sandakan (Mini Seminar) 3 October in Kuching 4 October in Bintulu for clubs in Bintulu (Mini Seminar) Clubs in BSB, Belait and Miri can choose to attend in any of the above seminars geographically convenient to them. Please come to support the seminars and I am sure you will go back with information and experience shared by speakers, panellists and participants like you. Above all we can get together again to catch up with our fellowship and friendship. I look forward to seeing all of you in the coming seminars and lets support DG Philip Chong and our District to achieve the membership goals. 23
