1 The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Volume 21, Number 1 Mary Livermore Library March 2012 Honoring Our Ancestors, Respecting Their the Library by Susan F. Whitt The eleventh annual Friends of the Library Benefit will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. on April 13, 2012 at the Mary Livermore Library. Honoring Our Ancestors, Respecting Their the Library will feature Dr. Ben Chavis, a noted educator, businessman, and author of Crazy Like a Fox: One Principal s Triumph in the Inner City. A silent auction and dinner period will begin the evening. UNCP Students of adjunct professor of music Derek Day will entertain guests during this time. Guests will dine from food stations featuring Southern, Italian, and Caribbean entrees. Dessert will be prepared and flambéed at diners request at a special dessert station. The silent auction and dinner period will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will provide an opportunity for ticket holders to take home some unique and interesting items. A current list of auction items is available at the Library s website at The list is updated as new donations for the benefit are received. Among the items now in the Library s possession are: an overnight stay for two with breakfast included at the Grove Park Inn in Ashville, tickets for two to ZipQuest Waterfall and Treetop Adventure tour in Fayetteville, tickets for two to the Carolina Opry, original pottery from Seagrove potters, tours of various wineries in both North and South Carolina, gift certificates to various restaurants, golf package certificates, and hand-crafted items. We are extremely honored and excited to have Dr. Ben Chavis as our featured speaker. A native of our area, he now lives in California, and also owns a farm in Robeson County. He was born into a Lumbee Indian family of sharecroppers in Dr. Ben Chavis the Saddletree area of Lumberton and as a child attended segregated Indian schools in Robeson County. Athletic scholarships allowed him to attend Pima Photo provided by Dr. Chavis College and the University of Arizona. Dr. Chavis s degrees include the Bachelor of Arts in education, the Master of Education in administration, and the Ph.D. in philosophy and education. He served as a teacher and administrator for several schools both in Arizona and California. Serving as principal of the American Indian Public Charter School (AIPCS) in Oakland, California has gained him the most recognition. He wrote about this experience in his critically acclaimed book Crazy Like a Fox: One Principal s Triumph in the Inner City. This book recounts how his educational model transformed a failing, low performing school into one of the highest ranked schools in the United States. Dr. Chavis has served as a commentator on the MSNBC news channel and filmed a Fox News special on Lumbee business people. This past summer he sponsored the American Indian Model Schools Math Camp that was held in Robeson County for local fourth- to ninth-grade students. This intensive three-week camp was based on his successful AIPCS model and Dr. Chavis plans to make the camp an annual event in Robeson County. Dr. Chavis wants to challenge students to work hard, become disciplined, and plan for an educated future. Honoring Our the Library is an excellent way to celebrate the arrival of spring. Money raised at this benefit will support the Friends of the Library initiatives such as continued support for eight scholarships established to assist students at UNCP, funding the McNaughton leasing program for popular reading materials and audio books, and sponsorship of author appearance and reading programs. To learn more about the Friends of the Library, how to apply for their scholarships, or to join our Friends of the Library, please call the Mary Livermore Library at or go to the Library s webpage at Library staff members Karen Fritts ( ) or Sherry Locklear ( ) may be contacted for tickets to the April 13 benefit event and more information. Tickets are $50 each. Save the date for this event. We look forward to seeing you there!

We are very fortunate this year to have Dr. Ben Chavis as our guest speaker. Dr. Chavis spoke to a large and enthusiastic crowd in the Library last year as part of the Hunt Photograph Identification Series event. The response was so enthusiastic that Dr. Elinor Foster, Dean of the Mary Livermore Library, asked Dr. Chavis to speak at the benefit. Not only did he graciously accept, but he also made possible a new scholarship to be awarded this year. The recipient of the Ben Chavis, Grandmother Lela Locklear Chavis and Great-Great Grandfather John Archie Locklear/ Friends of the Library Endowed Scholarship, as well as the other Friends of the Library of UNC Pembroke tuition and book schol- President, Friends of the Library Dr. Judy Curtis, arship recipients, will attend the benefit. of UNC Pembroke Please share your enthusiasm for the Mary Livermore Library by joining us for the evening. 10 Page 10 Library Celebrates National Library Week by Carl Danis Established in 1958, National Library Week promotes the importance of libraries and reading around the country. The American Library Association sponsors the national campaign. The Mary Livermore Library will hold two major events in honor of National Library Week. The first event is the annual weeklong book sale held in the Library. A portion of the proceeds from this event helps the Friends of the Library of UNCP by assisting the Friends with some of their endeavors throughout the year. This year the sale will be held April 2-5, 2012, on the first floor of the Library. Typically, the prices are $1.00 for hardbacks, $.50 for paperbacks, and $1.00 for media. However, some items will have special pricing. In addition, on the first day, to honor our Friends members, they will receive a 20% discount. There will be a variety of items including a couple of encyclopedia sets for people to silent bid on. On April 11, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. in the main reading room of the Library, there will be the annual membership meeting of the Friends of the Library, which includes the installation of new officers. Immediately after the meeting, we will honor the faculty authors. In addition, the winners of the Poetry/Short Prose Contest will read their works, with a reception following the program. The campus and community are invited to join in this annual celebration of the value of libraries, National Library Week. Library Staff Continue Scholarship Tradition by David W. Young In addition to their normal job responsibilities, Mary Livermore Library personnel strive to engage in a wide variety of scholarship endeavors which benefit the entire campus community.
