2 ACADEMICS HISTORICAL EXCELLENCE Crean Lutheran High School is proud to be part of the renowned Lutheran Education system, which has been educating students for over 165 years. Evidence of the excellence found in Lutheran education has been compiled by the National Assessment of Educational Progress; their data shows Lutheran schools score significantly higher than all other schools, including public, Catholic, charter, and other Protestant schools (Lubienski, C. Charter, Private, Public Schools and Academic Achievement, p.3). Additionally, Lutheran school students score 23 percent higher than national averages on standard achievement tests (Brekke, M., Youth Research Center). Within the Lutheran school system s celebrated history, CLHS is the fastest growing high school. At CLHS, we equip students spiritually, academically, and socially to become Christian leaders who serve as Christ s beacons, shining His love in a world cloaked in darkness. Accordingly, CLHS proudly maintains a 20:1 average class size. Students can follow various academic tracks, including those designed to meet the elevated standards of the University of California s A-G subject requirements or ones customized to meet the admission guidelines for elite private institutions. A wide array of academically rigorous honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses as well as Dual Credit Courses support these tracks. CLHS desires its students to be knowledgeable about their faith and willing to defend their beliefs; to engage in the classroom; to think critically and communicate clearly; and finally, to live their lives as servant-leaders for Jesus Christ. 20:1 Average class size I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 4 ACADEMICS COLLEGE & CAREER COUNSELING CLHS counselors work in close partnership with students and families to assist students in developing academically, socially, spiritually, and personally. The Counseling Department utilizes Naviance, a college and career readiness online tool, which assists students in their postsecondary planning process. Naviance allows students to understand how their strengths, goals, skills, and interests can lead to exciting careers. Crean Lutheran s alumni have been accepted into some of the nation s finest colleges, universities, and conservatories. Graduates from the Class of 2017 were accepted at Boston College, Caltech, Cal Poly SLO, Cornell, NYU, Princeton, Rice University, UCLA, West Point Military Academy, and many other elite institutions across the country. To support their collegiate aspirations, CLHS students are well-prepared to engage in strenuous university-level academics. In 2017, 97% of Crean Lutheran graduates went on to attend a college or university. Students are also afforded the opportunity to take advantage of free, on-campus, Princeton Review SAT/ACT test preparation classes. During the specialized 15-hour curriculum, students become familiar with test content and acquire the tools they need to score well. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God s varied grace. PAGE 4 1 Peter 4:10

5 STUDENT ACTIVITIES Our award-winning Servant Leadership Team (SLT) as well as our Link Crew, Student Ambassadors, Clubs, and Service and Outreach Programs provide an array of opportunities for students to become involved in campus activities. Whether planning campus-wide pep rallies and spirit events, welcoming new students to the campus, participating in student-driven clubs, or volunteering locally and globally, CLHS students enjoy a variety of programs where they are welcomed, involved, and grow! LEARNING SUCCESS PROGRAM The Learning Success Program (LSP) assists students in excelling academically while growing closer in their relationship with Jesus Christ. LSP Director Mary Oliver (M.Ed., M.A.) runs the program with the support of an additional resource teacher. The program supports students with documented learning disabilities through accommodations and counseling so that they may achieve their greatest possible academic success. For more information, contact the Admissions Department. HEALTH, SAFETY, & SUPERVISION The Director of Health, Safety, & Supervision as well as the Campus Deans and Supervisors work together to ensure each student s safety on campus. Crean Lutheran is a closed campus, which means students may not leave the campus between classes or during lunch. Campus supervision is in place each school day from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. By God s grace, CLHS Student Services staff strive to foster an environment where students thrive socially, emotionally, and spiritually. North Campus Expansion During the school year, the majority of the new North Campus Performing Arts and Athletics facilities will open. Four new studios will enhance Crean Lutheran s thriving Performing Arts programs: a 2,900 square foot dance studio, two 1,400 square foot choir/band studios, and a 2,160 square foot drama studio. The Athletics programs will gain a 5,000 square foot strength and conditioning center with state of the art weight training and cardio-conditioning equipment along with a 50-yard training field. CLHS is accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Lutheran School Accreditation (NLSA). INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT CLHS provides a top-tier education on a multi-cultural campus that currently hosts students from 18 countries. The nationally-commended International Department plays a valuable role in making CLHS one of the nation s most progressive high schools. The International Department is staffed by a team of professionals who selectively admit and shepherd international students. CLHS issues a select number of I-20s each year to qualified international students, and upon request, arranges for local host families. Individuals interested in learning more about the international admissions process should CLHS International Department Director, Mrs. Sherrie Lah, at int@clshs.org. EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Integrating 21st century technology into the classroom setting is a hallmark of CLHS. All students receive a laptop that is included in the cost of tuition. From online research to group collaboration, students use their laptops on a daily basis. CLHS also encourages students to utilize available ebooks and digital textbooks to further advance their academic pursuits. Finally, CLHS employs Canvas as a powerful course management system. Through Canvas, students can submit homework, download class content, take quizzes, communicate with teachers, and monitor their grades.

7 COHORT PROGRAMS: MEDICAL, ENGINEERING & BUSINESS CLHS offers three Christ-centered and scholastically rigorous cohorts that equip students for academic and professional success in their chosen field of study. Each cohort introduces students to high-level professionals, includes experiential field trips, and provides both independent research and internship opportunities. Cohort graduates receive special recognition at graduation as well as on their transcripts. More information about the cohort offerings is available at clshs.org/cohorts. Enrollment in a cohort requires a separate application, which can be obtained through the Admissions Office or on the website listed above. MEDICAL COHORT The Medical Cohort is designed for students who excel academically and wish to pursue a career in the medical field, whether as a doctor, a physician s assistant, a nurse, a dentist, a pharmacist, or one of many other medical positions. Through exceptional training and directed coursework, the program prepares students to study medicine at the university level. ENGINEERING COHORT The Engineering Cohort is designed for students who are naturally curious, interested in solving real-world problems, and passionate about exploring the various engineering strands (e.g. mechanical, civil, electrical, etc.). The curriculum, designed in partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW), focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and provides hands-on, project-based experiences. BUSINESS COHORT The Business Cohort is designed for students, who have a passion for business and are interested in exploring various professions within that field. The curriculum covers finance, accounting, economics, communication, and marketing. Completion of this cohort includes twelve (12) units of dual-credit courses. In addition, CLHS students tour local businesses and learn from on-site professionals. For example, students have visited IBM as well as Disneyland, where they have learned about diversifying operations, marketing, and management. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14 PAGE 7

During the school year, Crean Lutheran will join the Empire League and compete against top athletic programs in Orange County. To ensure overall student safety and success, CLHS athletics provides multiple services and amenities, including full-time staffing to coordinate academic support services, a comprehensive strength and conditioning program, and a sports medicine program. Additionally, for committed student-athletes who desire to compete at the collegiate level, Crean Lutheran s CIF-certified coaching staff assists with the college recruitment process ACCOLADES Girls Swimming/Diving recorded its fifth consecutive CIF title. Seven CLHS teams won Academy League titles, and nine teams made a strong run into CIF playoffs. Seven CLHS athletes were named OC Register athletes and studentathletes of the week. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:25 PAGE 10

12 visual & performing arts VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS Crean Lutheran High School supports the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) by developing the individual creative gifts of each artist. Students are required to take at least one unit of VPA to satisfy graduation requirements and the entrance requirements for most colleges and universities. CLHS is pleased to provide diverse opportunities for VPA engagement. Students may perform in a variety of settings, including theatrical productions, instrumental concerts, choral concerts, and dance performances. Visual artists are afforded exciting platforms to showcase their talents through exhibitions, both on and off-campus. Additionally, CLHS is committed to providing students with real-world experiences to develop and refine their respective gifts and crafts. CLHS student-artists have been recognized for excellence by the Orange County Pacific Symphony, South Coast Repertory Theater, the City of Irvine Fine Arts Council, the OC Register, and the Irvine Youth Arts Show. In 2017, six CLHS students were named to the Orange County Top Ten List for Visual Arts and Instrumental Music by the OC Register, and two CLHS students were named the OC Register Artist of the Year. For questions regarding the Performing Arts Department, please our Performing Arts Director, Alyssa Jones, at jones@clshs.org.
