10 City Highlights Welcome to University District The University District is comprised of the neighborhoods surrounding one of the nation s larget public universities, The Ohio State University. It is an eclectic mix of thirteen distinct neighborhoods: Dennison Place/The Circles, Glen Echo, Indianola Forest, Indianola Terrace, Iuka Ravine, Northwood Park, Old North Columbus, Peach District, Sohud, Tuttle Park, and Weinland Park. The area now known as the University District was not originally part of the City of Columbus at all. In 1842, out of expansive farmland emerged a separate town, North Columbus. Even before the establishment of The Ohio State University, which was first established in 1871 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, North Columbus thrived as a transportation node for stagecoaches travelling between Columbus and Sandusky. It existed on its own until it was officially annexed to Columbus in University District Organization The University District Organization (UDO) is a non-proit planning and community improvement organization incorporated in 1971 to work toward the stabilization and revitalization of the University District. The 2013 UDO/UCBA Strategic Plan provided a three year roadmap for projects, programs, and the organizational development of the UDO & UCBA. Specfically, the strategic plan addresses: Organizational Development University District Quality of Life Housing Neighborhood Planning Branding & Public Communications Business Development Campus Partners UNIVERSITY DISTRICT REVITALIZATION The Ohio State University, in cooperation with The City of Columbus, created Campus Partners for Community Urban Redevelopment in 1995 to spearhead the revitalization of the University District. WHAT THEY DO Campus Partners, the development arm of The Ohio State University, works to create positive changes in the community. Their mission is to revitalize distressed neighborhoods within the University District of Columbus, Ohio. We work to improve the quality of life for students, faculty, staff, residents and business owners throughout the university community and thereby, reinforce the stature of The Ohio State University as one of the world s great public research and teaching universities. PROJECT Campus Partners led a master planning process to acquire 9 acres along the High Street corridor bordered by 17th Avenue on the north and 14th Avenue on the south, to guide the future development in creating a distinct sense of place that is visually connected to the University District and Ohio State. An Urban Framework document was developed and is being guided by a vision based on the five objectives listed below: Promote a vibrant, mixed use environment within a multi-block district centered at 15th Avenue and High Street. Create a new community gathering space at 15th Avenue and High Street to serve as the physical and visual link between the University District east of High Street and the entry to the University s Campus west of High Street. Prioritize pedestrians by designing all streets to be walkable, comfortable and safe environments that allow for street level activity and vibrancy. Reconnect neighborhood streets to High Street, and, where possible, convert to two-way traffic to allow for easy vehicular access and wayfinding. Address parking requirements and reduce traffic circulating on neighborhood streets seeking onstreet parking by providing a new garage strategically located to serve the new development and existing neighborhood needs.
