4 We are pleased to welcome Jennifer Knox who begins her two-year term as OFSAA president. Jennifer is currently principal of Kenner Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Peterborough. She attended Wilfrid Laurier University where she played varsity tennis, was president of the Women s Athletic Association, and was recognized as the woman contributing most to athletics. Jen began her teaching career in Calgary before returning to Ontario, where she has taught at several schools over the years and coached a variety of sports including cross country running, basketball, and volleyball. As a high school athlete, her goal was always to get to OFSAA championships, and this is something her son and daughter both wanted to achieve as well. In addition to her busy life as a principal and OFSAA president, Jen also likes to play tennis, ski, hike, kayak and sail. OFSAA President s message Jennifer Knox I am excited to be OFSAA s President after serving with Ian Press and Jim Woolley for the past two years as the Vice President. We are very fortunate to welcome Doug Gellatly back as the Executive Director and with his experience and expertise, he will ensure that we are moving in a positive direction and will be a strong leader in the office with several new staff. Volunteers are the core of high school sport and I so highly value their time and commitment to students. It is our volunteers who define our mission and enrich the lives of our students through school sport. Thank you to all of the coaches, teachers and administrators who will support students and sport in our schools this coming school year. This year we will start developing a new strategic plan, and will take input from our grassroots and move forward to best serve our student athletes, teacher coaches and high school sport in the province. We are far more than just championships and this will become evident as we move forward. We face challenging times with declining enrollment and an aging coaching population. Our CIAAA courses and professional development for athletic directors continues to be strong and will hopefully grow as we attract young teacher-coaches into the role. It is our goal to ensure that OFSAA remains committed to our motto, Education through School Sport and I m confident that we can continue to provide quality programs, professional development, education and support, as well as championships throughout the province. I look forward to the next two years as President and welcome your input and comments. I can be reached at jennifer_knox@kprdsb.ca. The OFSAA Coaching Symposium returns in 2018! The bi-annual conference unites teacher-coaches across the province as they share ideas and get motivated! Focusing on the technical side of coaching, the conference provides sport specific skills, drills and strategies through oncourt and classroom sessions. The program has introductory and advanced sessions that will benefit both new and seasoned coaches. Best practice sessions will also be offered for new and experienced educators; providing strategies and information useful to any physical education environment. Basketball Soccer Badminton Sessions Include: Volleyball Rugby Nutrition Athlete Training CIOS Certification And much more! Please watch our website this fall for more information: DON T MISS OUT! 2 THE BULLETIN FALL 2017

6 Hosting or Attending an Invitational Event?? The ONLINE PROCESS to request OFSAA sanction. Go to the OFSAA website (ofsaa.on.ca) Click on Events/Sanctioned Events Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the required form either to HOST or to ATTEND an invitational event Complete the form and Submit online Once approved the school principal, and the coach or convenor will receive a letter of confirmation. **All schools must now use this online method to request OFSAA sanction. Faxed forms will not be accepted. REMEMBER 1. OFSAA-sanctioned Invitational Events must not contain the words, Ontario, Provincial, National, Canadian, or Championship in their titles. 2. You MUST obtain OFSAA sanction for: Any interprovincial tournament or meet you are attending Invitational events you are hosting that involve out-of-province participants Any state or NFHS-sanctioned tournaments or meets you are attending in the United States (Some American tournaments do not indicate whether they are sanctioned so it is best to obtain OFSAA sanction to be on the safe side) Several cross-border states now require OFSAA sanction for exhibition events, so it is advisable to obtain sanction. Failure to obtain OFSAA sanction may result in sanctioning of your school by the OFSAA Board of Reference - Sanctions, and may cause the out-ofprovince invited teams to be sanctioned by their home association. Reminder to schools Once again your team may only play OFSAA-eligible students in all your games (league and invitational) if you wish to be eligible for OFSAA and OFSAA-approved invitational events within or outside of the province. What does OFSAA-sanctioned mean??? All participants must be eligible under the rules and regulations of the Provincial or State Association of which they are members. A teacher-coach will be present and responsible for the athletes throughout the duration of your event. Schools will only play other schools that are eligible under their province/state rules. Once you have applied for OFSAA sanction and receive your confirmation letter, check the website under Events/Sanctioned to make sure your school is listed as attending or hosting, and that the information is accurate. Athletic Directors and department heads... make sure this information gets to all your coaches, both teacher-coaches and non-teacher coaches. Applications must be received by OFSAA at least 30 days prior to the start of the event. Spalding Keeping Football Safe - Continued Support for sponsored by With last year s debut of the Alpha football as the official ball of OFSAA, Spalding has recommitted to keeping football safe in Ontario schools for the school year. Newly mandated OPHEA safety guidelines require one coach per team to have completed the NCCP Safe Contact course. A limited number of teacher-coaches who successfully complete the course can apply for up to a $99 reimbursement through the OFSAA website. This Program is courtesy of Spalding. From those successful applicants OFSAA will draw three winners who each receive $1500 product credit from Spalding. An additional 40 winners will receive a new Spalding Alpha football, official football of OFSAA. Please look into taking the Safe Contact course, and check the OFSAA website in September for details and upcoming news on Spalding s program and how to apply for your reimbursement and chance to win! 4 THE BULLETIN FALL 2017

9 Policy Changes from the AGM The OFSAA Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held April 6th 7th with Association representatives across the province in attendance. The assembly voted on a number of motions, a selection of which are detailed here. TRANSFER POLICY Prep Teams: Students who play on a Prep team within a school and then are no longer on that Prep team but remain at the school, are ineligible for the bona fide school team for the current school year and the following school year. Note 11 be added to read: If a student moves from their home school to play on a Prep/Elite team within the new school, that is not a bona fide school team, he/she is ineligible for any sport played at his/her former school in the previous twelve (12) months (as per OFSAA Transfer Policy) A Prep/Elite team within a school is defined as a team that is not a bona fide school team as defined in the OFSAA Playing Regulations. Note 12 be added to read If a student moves from their home school to play on a Prep/Elite team within a school, and then returns to his/ her home school, or any other member school of OFSAA, he/she is considered a transfer student and must seek eligibility through the Association transfer process. These students may not apply for eligibility under section b (i) of the Transfer Policy. Members of a school Prep team are considered to have participated in the sport if applying under Section b (ii) of the Policy. International Students The student is an international student who has transferred to an Ontario school from outside Canada or the United States and is attending the school designated by the school board. (Section a) (iv) Note 13) International students must meet all of the following conditions in order to apply under a) (iv): a) The student is registered in a member school as an international student and pay tuition to that school board according to international student policy and fee schedule. b) The incoming international student will be enrolled at the receiving school for at least 5 consecutive months or one semester period. c) All other OFSAA eligibility policies apply to the student. OFSAA TRANSGENDER PARTICIPATION POLICY Transgender: An umbrella term that refers to individuals whose gender identity and/or gender expression is different from what is traditionally associated with their assigned biological sex at birth. Transgender people may or may not undergo medically supportive treatments, such as hormone therapy and a range of surgical procedures, to align their bodies with their internally felt gender identity. Transgender identity is not dependent upon physical appearance or medical procedures. OFSAA believes in equal opportunities for all students to participate in school sport. OFSAA supports the concept that a student s self-identification is the sole measure of their gender identity. OFSAA supports the participation of studentathletes in sport in accordance with their lived gender identity. OFSAA NEWS...almost full! 10 Housekeeping Update corrections from Spring The Spring 2017 Bulletin unfortunately printed the incorrect OFSAA Wrestling results instead of those from the 2017 Championship. An additional error was made in the same edition when the photo from the 2017 Girls A Volleyball Championship was duplicated for the Girls AA Volleyball results. OFSAA regrets these errors. Brian was born with a defective heart valve and in 2004, at only 51, died of a heart attack. The Brian Maxwell Memorial Scholarship awards amounts of $8,000, $4,000 and $2,000 each year to a male and female student-athlete in Ontario who will continue their post-secondary education at a Canadian college or university. These scholar-athletes must also display qualities of honesty, integrity, compassion, and unwavering quest to accomplish the best academically and athletically while supporting fellow team members. These were all qualities of Brian Maxwell. OFSAA is appreciative for the opportunity to partner with the Brian Maxwell Memorial Scholarship Fund to support students continuing their education in Canada. The 2017 gold recipients of the $8,000 scholarship are Sadie-Jane Hickson of Lindsay, and Liam Donnelly of Hamilton. Both are pictured with presenter Bruce Kidd. 15 Scholarships & Awards 2017 OFSAA Alumni Scholarship Recipients Recipients of the OFSAA Alumni Scholarships are not necessarily the students with the highest academic standing, who participate in the greatest number of sports, or have won OFSAA medals. These scholarships focus on the impact school sport has had on the individual and the role he or she has played to better the school community as a whole. Congratulations to the 2017 recipients for expressing how your unique experiences in school sport made your years in high school enjoyable and prepared you for life experiences as you go forward. Molly Boley Owen Sound DSS Outstanding academics highlighted by her role as valedictorian, involvement in many aspects of her school community, and active participation in track and field, basketball, volleyball, soccer and badminton during her school career - Molly is a truly deserving recipient of an OFSAA Alumni scholarship. She also found time to volunteer in many fundraisers, to coach girls field lacrosse, and to referee and score volleyball in the community. According to her coach, Molly is relentless, yet humble, in her pursuit of excellence, a respected leader, and most importantly, an honest, kind and caring person who is accepting and tolerant of all people. School sport has empowered her to succeed in all aspects of school life and we know Molly will continue to succeed as she moves on to study Global Politics at Carleton University. All the best in your future endeavors! Nathan Rowe Grand River CI, Kitchener Nathan was a remarkable student, athlete, volunteer and leader in his school community, and thus a worthy recipient of this scholarship. During his years at Grand River, he participated in volleyball, basketball, hockey, badminton and track and field, and also volunteered in many community activities, His academic accomplishments are nothing short of outstanding as he placed in the top five students in the school in consecutive years. School sports have provided Nathan with an outlet to grow and improve in ways he never thought possible, challenging his norms and stretching his comfort zone. The OFSAA Championships will be one of his greatest achievements and one of his most incredibly memorable experiences. We wish him well as he pursues mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo. Meg Kitchen I.E. Weldon SS, Lindsay Meg took some good advice when she entered high school and got involved. She was indeed an active participant in her school community, joining in basketball, rugby, soccer and swimming, and serving on the Student Council. Her love of sport is evident through the energy and enthusiasm she shows with her volunteer work with children s programs in the community. Despite many hours spent in the gym or volunteering in the community, Meg still maintained a high academic average. Her coaches have been positive role models demonstrating the same positive thinking and focused energy she applies to both her sports and academics. They applaud her as a true team player, the first person to encourage team mates, and an individual who has the ability to motivate others. The commitment, determination, and motivation acquired through school sport will serve Meg well as she studies Recreation and Leisure at the University of Waterloo. All the best, Meg! Taylor Flewwelling Englehart HS Involved in basketball, volleyball, track and field, soccer, badminton and cross country, a member of the Student Council and other school clubs, and an excellent scholar - Taylor is also a deserving recipient of this OFSAA recognition. She devotes many hours to a variety of community groups as well. Her principal applauds her amazing work ethic as she takes initiative to get the job done whether it be in the classroom, on her sports team, or in her volunteer roles. Her enthusiasm and positive attitude are contagious and often motivate others to get involved. School sport made high school a friendlier place for Taylor, as teammates became friends and stronger relationships developed with staff members. The important qualities of organization, problem-solving, time management, and working under pressure, learned through school sport, will prepare Taylor for her university life at the University of Guelph where she will study Agricultural Science. Enjoy your university experience! 13

25 OFSAA Girls A/AA and AAA Rugby Durham Region May Championship Results Under the leadership of Convenor Amy Murray, the host committee was well-prepared to welcome approximately 1,000 athletes and coaches to the Durham Region for both the Girls A/AA and Girls AAA Rugby Championships. The entire event was first rate from start to finish, including the large banquet in the gymnasium of Durham College/UOIT. Players and coaches had the opportunity to hear from guest speakers Cindy Nelles and Jane Kirby from the Canadian national team, and both were excellent role models for the OFSAA participants. Also featured at the banquet, were the talents of Anthony Brosseau from O Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute who performed songs before and during dinner. Brooklin High School and Port Perry High School provided the playing venues along with the local rugby clubs in Oshawa (Vikings) and Ajax (Wanderers).
