Longhorn Foundation Endowments

As a Texas Longhorn, you treasure our time-honored traditions and feel a deep and abiding pride in being part of the Texas family. Your legacy can be as enduring as that of Longhorns. When you establish an endowment, your gift lasts forever. Like sound investments, an endowment grows over time to ensure a promising future for generations of Texas student-athletes. Your endowment gift connects you to The University of Texas, our student-athletes and their education in powerful ways. In fact, your endowment donation funds scholarships that provide student-athletes with something they value for a lifetime: a University of Texas education. Scholarship Costs Have Risen In January 2015, the NCAA approved legislation to enhance the collegiate experience. We welcomed these new policies that increase financial aid provided to student-athletes to cover full cost of attendance and personal educational expenses. At Texas, these enhancements to students amount to $4,310 per student-athlete for the fall and spring semesters, or $1.4 million annually. We ask that you continue to support our dedicated student-athletes by helping Texas Athletics increase sustainability of our scholarship funds. With these new rules, your support is more critical than ever. That s where endowments and you can make a remarkable difference. You Can Build a Texas Legacy Your Gifts to Scholarships Are Critical College athletics scholarships are the second-highest source of college scholarships in the nation, behind only the GI Bill. Many Longhorn student-athletes are the first in their families to attend college. Many are only able to earn a Texas degree thanks to generous donors who support scholarships. Despite the critical role that endowed scholarships play in Texas Athletics, only 5.8 percent of our scholarships are endowed today. That means we must pay for scholarship costs, year after year, rather than rely on the lasting power of endowments to cover those costs. We trail many of our rivals who have larger endowments than ours, including Texas A&M, Oklahoma and West Virginia. We never settle for less in competition. We shouldn t be left behind in endowments. 1

Longhorn Foundation Endowments Our student-athletes rely on you An academic scholarship is vital to the education of student-athletes, but it is only one component of their full development as competitors and scholars. Many other costs are involved in changing the life of a Texas student-athlete expenses related academic support, sports medicine, athletic performance, performance nutrition, travel and equipment. $18,498 Tuition, Books & Fees $26,894 Room & Board $7,153 Other: Insurance, 5th Year Aid, Emergency Travel, etc $5,394 Cost of Attendance Scholarship Costs Scholarship costs include the funds necessary for enrollment in the university and the new NCAA cost of attendance figures for fall, spring and summer terms. These costs total nearly $58,000 per year. Junior middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu T $7,514 Sports Medicine $6,214 Academic Support $3,304 Equipment $2,919 Athletics Performance $852 Performance Nutrition Annual cost to change the life of a $92,928 Texas student-athlete Program Costs Program costs include student-athlete support systems, performance and operating expenses. These costs total $34,988 per year. See page 8 for more details 2

Leave a Legacy: Fund a Scholarship Endowment With your support, Texas can create a scholarship endowment to fully cover the academic-related costs associated with providing world-class support and opportunities for our student-athletes in every sport program. When you contribute to a scholarship endowment, you guarantee our program s financial stability and provide for the educational well-being of our student-athletes not just today but forever. How Does an Endowment Work? With the financial expertise of The University of Texas behind us, we invest your gift. The principle remains untouched. Each year, we use the distribution like dividends on a mutual fund account to support our student-athletes. Investment returns above the distribution rate help the value of the endowment increase over time. For example, a gift of $350,000 gift yielding a distribution rate of 4.75 percent would total $16,625 in projected funds each year. Commitment Levels: $775,000 Full Scholarship Endowment $350,000 Half Scholarship Endowment $100,000 Partial Scholarship Endowment Senior center Taylor Doyle 3

Steve and Carolyn Mafrige fell in love at The University of Texas. The year was They initially met on a blind date when Carolyn was a student at Trinity University in San Antonio and Steve was studying business at UT. But distance kept them from ever seeing one another. The next fall, Steve was in his normal seat at the football stadium, and Carolyn was sitting in the row in front of him with one of his friends. Their generous gifts stem from Steve s days as a UT law student. The baseball park was just across the street from the law school. In the afternoon, bored with studying, the longtime fan would often sneak off to the baseball field and catch a game. Now, he said, I wanted to do something. I knew baseball had limited scholarships, and it just seemed like a good use of money. Steve and Carolyn Mafrige And that s how I got her number, and we started dating, Steve recalled. They married his last year in school. More than four decades later, Texas Football still holds a special place in their hearts and in their lives. I plan nothing in football season, Carolyn says. No trips in the fall. That emotional connection has inspired the Mafriges to give of their time and their treasure. In addition to being involved with the Chancellor s Council and Littlefield Society, the couple recently pledged a full scholarship endowment in the amount of $775,000 to Texas Baseball through a combination of a gift today to the Longhorn Foundation and a gift tomorrow through a bequest in their wills. Steve and Carolyn relocated to Houston, where he practiced law for more than 30 years. Carolyn taught school and supported wildlife charities. The couple raised two children, Melissa and Steven, who both went to TCU. But they were smart enough to marry Texas Exes, Steve said. Today, Steve and Carolyn spend their time enjoying one another and their family. They especially like to travel but not during football season. We love the university, Steve said. Giving back is just a natural thing for anyone who is fortunate, and we are. 5

Student-Athlete Health and WelfARE The Texas Athletics Health and Welfare team and the Student Services staff foster the emotional and physical well-being of all student-athletes. Through their daily interaction, assistance and care, these staff members have an immediate, consistent and lasting impact on student-athletes. You may choose to support one or more of the following programs: Performance Nutrition: Fuel to Win The Performance Nutrition team fuels student-athletes to win in athletics and in life by providing world-class nutrition expertise. Their goal is to improve performance, reduce injury and sustain optimal long-term health. Two full-time sports dieticians oversee, source and fully stock fuel stations, which provide student-athletes easy access to whole foods and thoughtful nutrition before and after workouts. The Texas Athletics Nutrition Center, which opened in 2015, provides a state-of-the-art learning lab where staff nutritionists can teach student-athletes the life skills to make educated, healthy food choices. Athletic Performance: Champions Train Here Athletics performance strength and conditioning coaches are dedicated to developing student-athletes into championship teams through a holistic approach involving training, technology, recovery, mentality and support. Physical qualities like speed, agility, power and strength are emphasized as much as emotional tools like toughness, accountability and teamwork. Sports Medicine: Pre-eminent Healthcare Our staff of medical experts provides services and resources that ensure health and safety, enabling faster recovery and quality outcomes for student-athletes. In addition, the staff leverages the St. David s HealthCare partnership concierge services to provide the best of care for student-athletes. Sports Medicine also works closely with Student Services to provide an extensive mental health care program, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and performance consultants. Student Support Services The Student Services staff is committed to helping each student-athlete achieve academic excellence. A dedicated team of academic counselors, mentors and tutors supports the student-athlete s academic path. One of the essential functions of the Student Services staff is to facilitate study hall a study skills program that aids student-athletes acclimation to the University s academic demands. During study hall sessions, student-athletes work with academic mentors to review notes and coursework, set short- and long-term goals and prepare for upcoming assignments. 9

Longhorn Foundation Endowments Endowment support inspires Texas Athletics Nutrition Center Afew years ago, connected by a mutual family friend, Colt McCoy visited Stuart and Eliza Stedman at their ranch. Colt reminisced about the myriad obligations he faced as a Texas quarterback. When he wasn t studying textbooks and the Longhorns playbook, dissecting scouting reports or training in the gym, Colt said he used his free time to scour coupons for the cheapest meal deals in Austin. At the time, Texas student-athletes were allowed only one provided meal per day from the NCAA, and Colt said his monthly scholarship stipend barely covered rent and his cell phone bill. Eliza, a former nutrition student at UT, was alarmed. How can you play football on one meal per day? she wondered. The vision of Colt and other student-athletes clipping coupons compelled the Stedmans to work with the Longhorn Foundation to finance a performance nutrition endowment. Today, the couple s program endowment helps sustain the day-to-day operations that inspired the new Texas Athletics Nutrition Center, which opened in Last summer, the NCAA introduced new dietary regulations, allowing student-athletes to be served lunch and dinner along with unlimited snacks. To Eliza s delight, UT student-athletes are no longer forced to fuel themselves on fast food. The new and welcome rules added almost $2 million to the Texas Athletics budget. Thanks to the help of donors like the Stedmans, the Texas Athletics Nutrition Center now offers amenities like a wood-fired oven, expanded salad bar, a fresh graband-go section and a grill-to-order bar. It was a perfect fit. Endowments are permanent and sustaining, and this area of need really appealed to us, Stuart said. Student-athletes should walk into the nutrition center and be inspired to eat healthy, said Amy Culp, Texas Athletics sports dietician. The food is clean and fresh, but the space also has a comfortable, inviting feel. It s truly a space for the student-athletes, a space they can enjoy as a team. For Eliza, she s just happy student-athletes are being fueled to win. I truly feel if we feed them well, they ll perform better, she said. 10

Freddie Steinmark was a starting safety for the Longhorns national champion football team in He endures as a Texas symbol of courage and perseverance and an inspiration to all. Fred Steinmark Scholarship Endowment Following Texas victory against No. 2 Arkansas, a cancerous tumor was discovered in Freddie s left thigh, resulting in the amputation of his leg. He returned to the sidelines on crutches to support his team s triumph over Notre Dame in the 1970 Cotton Bowl. Freddie passed away two years later in Houston. The major motion picture My All-American was released in November 2015, portraying Freddie s story of strength for national audiences. The Fred Steinmark Fund was the first endowment established by Texas Athletics. As Freddie remains an example to student-athletes, the scholarship endowment in his name persists as a means to support the development of a new generation of Longhorns. If the Steinmark story inspires you, please contact our office at to make a donation in his honor. 11

Longhorn Foundation Endowments Your Generosity Can Enhance Your Longhorn Experience As an endowment donor, you share in every victory with our student-athletes every graduation every championship and each triumph in between. You ll also receive updates on the team or program you support and an invitation to the annual Texas Academic Awards Presentation, an event that honors individual and team academic accomplishments. 12

The University of Texas is known across the country as being a place of excellence. All of us student-athletes feel so blessed and so thankful for the community that surrounds us. I m reminded each and every day of how important the Longhorn Foundation donors are. I m most thankful for your belief in us. Your philanthropy shows that you know we are capable of great things and that you trust us. Being a student-athlete at Texas means I have the ability to compete at a high level while attending a premier University athletically and academically. I ve won a few National Championships individually and that success reflects the support, the facilities, the trainers and academics. No one could do that alone. Your support of the Longhorn Foundation helps make that happen. Ryan Crouser, track and field Clay Youngquist, men s swimming Thank You for Your Support The generosity and support from Longhorn Foundation members not only helps fund my own athletic scholarship, but also supports resources like our stateof-the-art facilities and academic support. I am extremely lucky to be at The University of Texas on an athletic scholarship and receive the best academic help in pursuing my degree. This would not be possible without your unwavering support. I am so thankful for the opportunities we have and for the amazing support we get from the athletics and academic staff and from donors. The family and community we have and being able to play for Texas means a lot. We feel so much pride when we go out on the course wearing our burnt orange because it s very prestigious to play for Texas. It s a once in a lifetime experience.
