1 Page 1 Alfalfa County Cooperative Extension News September/October 4-H ers to get drone experience during National Youth Science Day National Youth Science Day is the world s largest youth -led science experiment. Thousands of youth across the country have taken part in NYSD activities over the past eight years, and this year will be no different. Slated Oct. 5, youth will participate in Drone Discovery, the 4-H NYSD engineering design challenge, said Jeff Sallee, Oklahoma 4-H science and technology state specialist with the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension. Drone Discovery is a hands-on engineering design challenge that explores the science behind drones and how they re being used to solve real world problems, Sallee said. 4-H ers who participate will learn everything from flight dynamics and aircraft types, to safety and regulations, to remote sensing and flight control. Drone is the common name for an unmanned aerial vehicle. UAVs are comprised of a system of tools that work together and include the platform, sensor, target and ground control station. Drones are extremely useful for a wide variety of jobs that can be especially dirty or dangerous, such as inspecting cell towers or surveying damage caused by floods, fires or tornadoes. They also are beneficial when checking out wildlife populations or analyzing military situations in an effort to keep soldiers out of harm s way. We also gain a degree of freedom because drones can travel almost anywhere as often as needed, he said. They ve been used to map ocean currents, crosscountry power line and pipelines and have been used for anything from pollution monitoring, firefighting, forecasting the weather and even pizza delivery. This year s event marks the ninth year for NYSD activities and it continues to get bigger and better every year. Sallee said he expects about 1,000 Oklahoma youth to participate. Activities such as NYSD go hand-in-hand with 4-H programming because all of the activities are hands on and learning by doing. That has always been the philosophy of the 4-H program in that youth learn better when they are actually involved in and doing the activity, he said. NYSD is a fun way we are able to engage youth in science, technology, engineering and math activities. STEM programs provide club members with an opportunity to have fun while learning, and in turn, using what they learn to contribute to their communities. NYSD also is a great opportunity to reinforce 4- H is more than animal-related projects. We provide learning opportunities for many different interests. Tulsa State Fair will be held Sept. 29 th -October 9 th, PHOTOSCRAMBLE Youth Division Superintendent: WheatHearts OHCE Awards sponsored by WheatHearts OHCE Contest begins at 4:00pm on Wednesday, September 7th, the first day of the fair. Judging Criteria: Creativity Prizes will be awarded! Divisions: PK - 2nd Grade 3 rd - 6 th Grade 7 th - 12 th Grade Contestants will be given a theme to take a picture, each kid giving an interpretation of the picture with a timed submission. All of this will be on a camera phone or digital device they can bring back for the judges to look at. Contest: Wilton Decorated Cake Division Exhibits will be judged on decoration only. Good balance among decorations. Entry Requirements: Create a table setting for (2) using a theme of your choice. Use your imagination. YOU provide the centerpiece, Table Setting Contest tableware, props and card table for your use. Notify the Extension Office by the Tuesday before the fair with your intent to enter your table setting. Obtain an exhibitor number and display a fair entry tag so it is clearly visible on your setting. Bring all items necessary to decorate your table including your table. Decorations may be set up on Tuesday from 8am-7pm during early bird entry or during open class entry beginning on Wednesday at 7:30a.m. Noon. Table decorating should be limited to tabletop only-no props beside the table. Setting should be in good taste. You may use real or artificial decorations; just make sure they will hold up for the whole fair. Neither the Extension Office nor the Alfalfa County Fair Board will be responsible for loss or damage to table settings regardless of the cause. All participants MUST collect their table decorations at fair exhibit release time on Friday.

4 Page 4 Alfalfa County Cooperative Extension News National 4-H Week October 2 8, 2016 Be sure to plan community service activities during National 4-H Service Week, October 2-8, Recognize your volunteers! This is a great time to publicize 4-H in your communities. Recruit new members! Celebrate! 4-H Camp 2016 Alfalfa County 4-H members had a great time at County camp this year. We had 19 4-H members from Alfalfa County attend camp June 28-30, in Vici, OK. They participated in ATV Safety, small bore and shotgun shooting, and had a pamper session. Campers attended workshops on arts and crafts, dance lessons, making animal tracks and went swimming. This years campers were able to have a campfire, made s mores and all campers were able to ride the zip line. Those attending were: Riley Hensley, Colten Lormand, Greysan Ioerger, Kaleb & Mae Nevels, Taryn & Taylor Miller, Summer Finney, Haven Davis, Colby Roach, Bethany Robinson, Abby Guffy, Korey Dooley, Warren Walborn, Hope Jordan, Hannah Wear, Brant Failes, Macy Goodwin, and Cole Hague. 7 Northwest District 4-H Leadership Conference October 19th & 20th, 2016 The Northwest District 4-H Leadership Conference will be held on October the 19th and 20th in Enid, Okla. at the Springhill Suites. Registration and RAM forms are due by September 15th in the Alfalfa County Extension Office. Delegates should be 14 years old by January 1, Cost is $60.00 per youth. T-Shirts are an additional $8.00. Leadership activities will include games, a dance, workshops and fun. Call the Extension Office for more info Denver Western Roundup! The Denver Western Roundup conference is normally held in January of each year in Denver Colorado. The Oklahoma delegation will travel together by bus. During the Western Roundup, you will have the opportunity to Establish new friendships with fellow 4-H members and leaders. Participate in social and educational programs by being a participant, not a spectator. Experience and develop greater personal growth. Continue to develop leadership and citizenship skills. Reach for new career ideas and cultural development in areas of business, agriculture, science, industry, education and the arts. Share personal experiences with others through things that have been meaningful to your growth and development. 9 Page 9 September/October 4-H Program Fee Thank you for being a part of the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development program! 4-H is recognized as the largest youth-serving organization in the country, providing high-quality, hands-on opportunities for more than 100,000 Oklahoma youth. A recent national research study discovered that the structured out-of-school time learning, leadership experiences and adult mentoring young people receive through their participation in 4-H plays a vital role in helping them achieve success. After careful consideration, the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service determined that to preserve high-quality programming, a 4-H Program Fee is necessary. With the implementation of a 4-H Program Fee, Oklahoma will join similar efforts of other states that have found it necessary to generate additional revenues to continue providing high quality programs. Beginning with 4-H enrollment for the H year, a $20/year 4-H Program Fee will be applied to all members who are part of a sustained 4-H experience. All 4-H members, as part of the program fee, will be covered by the $1/member accident insurance available through American Income Life as long as their enrollments are current and the injury took place during a 4-H activity. Claims will be managed locally using a state policy number. Funds will help provide educational, technical and logistical support to maintain a high-quality program at the local, district and state levels for youth and volunteers. No individual will be denied participation in 4-H due to the inability to pay. Extension offices may be contacted for scholarship information. Clubs and groups may choose to do fundraising or collect donations to offset 4-H Program Fees for their members. Instructions on how to enroll online will be ed by the end of August to each family currently enrolled. An enrollment is not considered current unless the $20.00 membership fee is paid. Bring your calendars so we can set dates for upcoming events and we will hold officer elections. All parents and volunteers are welcome to attend. Alfalfa County 4-H Benefit Dinner November 6, 2016 The 2016 Alfalfa County 4-H Benefit Dinner will be held Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Alfalfa County Exhibit Building. Everyone is welcome to come and eat with us. Proceeds from this dinner provide fee waivers for 4-H members to attend District, State, and National Events. Any 4-H Family bringing food needs to have their item there by 9:00 a.m. Helpers are needed from 9:00 a.m. through clean up. Clubs will furnish the following: Cherokee- 4 Turkeys & 12 Pans of Dressing Timberlake- 7 Turkeys & 10 Desserts Burlington- 7 Turkeys & 10 Desserts Meals are by donation only. The meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. 4-H Has Talent 2016 Start preparing now for the 2016 Alfalfa County 4-H Has Talent to be held, Sunday, November 20, The contest will be held at the Burlington High School Audi- torium. All entry forms are due in the Extension Office, November 17th, by noon. All acts using a tape or having lighting specifications must check in with sound/light technicians 15 minutes before 4-H Has Talent starts at 2:00 p.m. Entry forms are in this newsletter on page 27.
