1 2013 Science Research Award Summary This year a total of 63 students, 51 from the high school and 12 from the junior school, presented their science research projects in four different science competitions. Here are some highlights: In February, 35 students in grades 9 through 12 entered the PJAS region 1A competition. 33 of these students earned first awards, allowing them to advance to the state competition. Juniors Lauren Pease, Erica Westlake and Amrita Sukhavasi earned perfect scores. 13 of these students opted to enter the PJAS state competition which was held in May. At the state competition 8 first awards and 5 second awards were earned. A list of winners from the state meet follows: First Award Amrita Sukhavasi Second Award Erin Boyle Caroline Booraem Maddie Brennan Lauren Pease Shannon Cattie Becca Gleeson Cassie Henry Johanna Tomkiewicz Jordan Pietrafitta Casey McCoy Brianna Heffernen Erica Westlake Juniors at the PJAS Award Ceremony. Freshmen winners at PJAS. Junior Lauren Pease earned a perfect score of 5.0 with junior Amrita Sukhavasi following closely behind with a score of 4.9. In addition, Lauren was awarded the Karl F. Oerlein Award by the Pennsylvania Academy of Science and a scholarship to the Pennsylvania State University College of Engineering.

2 In early March, 41 students, 29 from the high school and 12 from the junior school (selected as winners in Notre Dame s Junior School Science Fair) entered the Delaware County Science Fair where 27 students earned third place or higher, allowing them to advance to the Delaware Valley Science Fair. Unfortunately, Easter Break conflicted with the Delaware Valley Fair, so only 19 of the students who qualified were able to attend. At Del. Val, 6 students earned category awards, including two coveted First Place Awards, one to Junior Lauren Pease in the category of Zoology, and one to freshman Anne Marie Crinnion in the category of Biochemistry. Senior Katherine Rogan was awarded third place in the physics category. 6 students earned special awards including scholarships to the University of the Sciences and Drexel University awarded to Lauren Pease. Katherine Rogan, Jenny Zack, Carolyn Riegel, Anne Marie Crinnion and Erica Westlake also received special awards. Brianna Heffernen, Madeline DelVescovo and Morgan Patton at the Delaware Valley Science Fair. Lauren Pease, Anne Marie Crinnion, Erica Westlake, Mrs. Giannantonio and Mr. Cushing at the Delaware Valley Science Fair. Two students, seniors Katherine Carroll and Sara Sheridan are recognized for their participation in scientific research at Notre Dame for all four years of high school.
