1 Volume 19, Issue 3 The Ohio State University, The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Fulton County Commissioners Cooperating 4-H Pre-Fair Judging Newsletter Dear 4-H Project Participants: I hope you are enjoying your summer and your 4-H project. Most of the judging for this year s projects will take place at the Fulton County Extension Office, located at the Robert Fulton Agriculture Center, across from the Fulton County Fairgrounds, except for Aerospace judging. Please take note of the schedule to see where your judging is being held. All projects must be interview judged to be complete in their project. All projects must be interview judged before they are eligible to show or display at the Fulton County Junior Fair. To be eligible for county and state awards you must attend judging on the scheduled day and time for your project. Be sure to check the Fulton County 4-H Handbook (online at to see what specific things you must bring to judging. Enclosed you will find the judging schedule with the times listed for each project. Please plan on arriving sometime during the scheduled project time. You will be judged in the order you check in. If there is one specific time for your project (not a time range) you need to come at that specific time because you are the only person taking that project. If you cannot make it to your assigned judging time or will not be attending judging, please contact the Extension Office at You may attend make-up judging. Make-up judging will be conducted during regular judging days by available judges. Projects judged at make-up judging are not eligible for county awards or the Ohio State Fair. Approximately three to four days after the judging is over, the winners will receive a congratulation letter in the mail. No winners will be given out over the phone. If you have any questions call the Extension Office. Good luck with your projects! Sincerely, Jill Stechschulte Extension Educator 4-H Youth Development stechschulte.23@cfaes.osu.edu FULTON COUNTY 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT June, 2015 In this issue 4-H Pre-Fair Judging Pg. 7 4-H Extension Connection Page 7 TIPS FOR 4-H JUDGING Be well groomed. That includes clean hands, hair and fingernails (fingernail polish is either all on or all off fingers and/or toes). Don t chew gum. Use good posture. Make sure you sit or stand straight and tall. Be polite and use your best manners. Be prepared to talk about your project. Know what you did, how you did it, what you learned and what you might do differently the next time. When answering the judge s questions, speak clearly and loudly enough for the judge to hear your answers. During your interview, look directly at the judge. Give him/her your full attention. Don t be distracted by other people or noises around you. Thank the judge when the interview is finished. Remember, the real purpose of judging is sharing and learning. Be pleasant and confident. Smile and be enthusiastic! Be proud of your accomplishments!! You worked hard to earn them. Judging Guidelines For completion, all 4-H projects must be judged. Even though projects are judged before the fair, projects must be exhibited at the Fulton County Fair to receive a premium. No premiums will be paid if project is taken home early from the fair. 4-H members are responsible for removing projects from the Jr. Fair Building between 5-9 p.m. on the last day of the fair or items will be disposed of. All 4-H members are responsible for bringing their project to the appropriate judging. All 4-H members will participate in two leadership/citizenship experiences as required by the Planning Your Project section in your project book. Poster Guidelines Many projects require a poster for judging. Listed below are some guidelines for making a poster. Remember, if the guidelines are not followed, the project grade may be lowered. 1. Tell just one story on a poster. 2. Keep it simple. 3. Make lettering large enough to be read from a distance of 4-8 feet. Letters should be at least 1/2 inch high. 4. Your poster should attract attention. Make it as colorful and attractive as possible so that fairgoers will stop and look at it. 5. Keep it neat, but do your own work. 6. Poster should be appropriate to the size of exhibit it contains. (Unless the poster size is specified in the project guidelines.) 7. Poster should include project name and 4-H ers name. Be sure to check your project Guidelines for poster size! NO larger than 22" x 28" posters.
