2 Rockford Bands A Philosophy of Music It is the goal of this department to provide the best training possible and to increase the student s musical skills in areas of performance, technique, theory, appreciation, and history. Music allows us to communicate in ways not possible in any other form. Music causes us to feel things we normally do not feel. We not only send messages through music, we receive them. Music ignores differences in opinion, religion, politics, race, lifestyle, and personality. Music allows young people to create works of lasting beauty and gives us the opportunity to watch those same young people become leaders in society. Music gives us the opportunity to perform some of the greatest works of art, written by some of the greatest geniuses that have lived on this earth. Music will enrich a person s life. Final thought.. When you graduate, did you get the most out of your high school experience? Did you leave your mark? Consider the three A s Academics Athletics Arts 1

11 Concert Attendance We spend a lot of time each week preparing for our concerts. It is expected that students make this a priority. It is not unreasonable for me to expect 100% attendance. We expect students and parents to check schedules weeks and months ahead of time to get concert dates on their calendar. Attendance at concerts is required (please see grading). Students will be required to be in uniform for the Winter Concert, large group contests, and graduation. 14 Grading and Attendance Policy Grading for students in grades 9-12 will be based on concert attendance, pep band attendance, lessons, rehearsal participation, evaluations, and playing tests held throughout the school year. The following is a breakdown of the grading scale for trimesters 1 and 3 for Concert Band, trimester 1,2,3 for Varsity Band. Concerts..40% of your grade Lessons/Practicing/Assignments % of your grade Participation % of your grade The following is a breakdown of trimester 2 (Concert Band) Lessons/Practicing/Assignments. 80% of your grade Participation.20% of your grade Pep Band: To ensure a great sounding pep band at every event, pep band performances are required and are part of your overall grade. Concert Band students are permitted to miss 2 excused pep bands per season (including play-off games) and not have it affect their grade or their ability to letter in band. An excused pep band needs to be accompanied by a parent or note. This does NOT include Homecoming. More than two pep band misses per trimester will result in the lowering of a student s grade and disqualification of lettering. Exceptions will be made for illness, vacation, etc. as long as the director has written notification of the miss. Another extra-curricular activity that conflicts with pep band does not count against a student. All concerts are required: Concerts are 40% of your grade. In an emergency situation a student can complete a make-up assignment with the instructor s permission. Make-up assignments will include a lengthy written assignment and/or extra performance. *Memorial Day and Graduation are considered required performances! Remember!! To receive full credit for your concert grade, you must arrive to warm ups on time, behave appropriately during warm ups, and display appropriate concert etiquette during concerts. Memorial Day.. Students not participating in the Memorial Day Program will complete an alternative assignment. This assignment is due the Friday before Memorial Day. The length of this assignment will be similar to the length of time the band spends preparing for the Memorial Day program. Lessons: Students in grade 9 will have an individual lesson approximately every 3 weeks. Students will be graded on their preparation for lessons and practice times. Students receive 1 point for every 10 minutes of practicing. 20 points is considered a score of 100% for practicing (200 minutes every 3 weeks). Students will receive extra credit for extra practicing (again, 1 point for every 10 minutes of practice). *Lessons are for non-private lesson students. 11

15 Extra Credit Opportunities: Students that participate in jazz band or perform outside the school district will be given extra credit. 1. Jazz Band: Participation in jazz band will help your grade by up to 10%. Attendance will be taken at rehearsals. To receive full credit you must be at the rehearsals and be on time. Students must also perform all performances to receive full credit. 2. Solo/Ensemble Contests: Varsity Band students that participate will receive extra creidit. 3. Ferdig Fridays: First Friday of each month. Perform at the public library for extra credit. Tardy Policy for Concert and Varsity Band To receive full credit for their participation grade, students must be one time. A tardy results in lost points for that day. Definition of TARDY : Anyone that is not in the band room or instrument storage area prior to the 2 nd bell. Anyone already in the hallway will not be marked tardy as long as they are hustling the door. 12

17 All-State Band Auditions/Honor Bands Students that excel on their instruments are strongly encouraged to audition for All-State Band. All-State Band is an ensemble made up of the top high school players in the state. Each year about 1,200 students audition and about 200 students are selected. There are about 40,000 band students in the state of Minnesota. A student that makes All-State is virtually guaranteed scholarships in college even if you are not a music major. In addition to All-State, the state of Minnesota also has an All-State honor band for grades 9-10 and for jazz band. In addition to all-state, there are also other honor opportunities throughout the school year. All honor bands coming up will be announced well ahead of time. Membership The band program is open to any student in grades Students may join at any time with the instructor s permission. Membership may be withheld from any student whose attitude is not acceptable. This organization will always choose quality over quantity. Students will be removed from the band program if the director feels it is in the best interest of the band. Reed/Oil Prices -All reeds are $3.00 each (except for oboe and bassoon) -Ask about the cost for a box of reeds -Valve oil is $5.00-$7.00 a bottle -Used marching lyres are $1.00 each -New marching lyres are $5.00 each We also have cleaning kits, mouthpieces, neck straps, reed guards, snare sticks, and other items on sale. 14

19 Jerald Ferdig Rockford High School Dear band parents and students: Each year students have the opportunity to take private lessons on their instrument. Private instruction gives students the opportunity to learn from an instructor that specializes on their instrument. It s a tremendous opportunity for students and is one of the reasons Rockford has maintained a highly successful band program. This year Chuck Armstrong will be our woodwind specialists. Kevin Fuhrman will be our percussion specialist. Loren Endorf will be the brass specialists. All of our private teachers are experienced teachers and educators and have worked in the Rockford School District for years. There is a fee for private lessons. Depending on the instructor, they range from $25.00-$28.00 per lesson. Students typically get 4 lessons per month with each lesson 30 minutes in length. Payments will be made directly to the instructor. (do not write checks to Rockford Schools) Lessons will begin the week of September 12 th. *Private lessons are taught during band/choir time or before/after school.
