PREVIEW Last season the University of Northern Colorado women s soccer team wasted little time jumping into a full Division I schedule in the squad s first season as a Division I team in 14 years. As the reclassification process began in 2003, UNC played 11 of its 16 regular season matches against D-I squads. The Bears tackled that challenge with a group of eight seniors. This season the team will not have as many upperclassmen (only six total juniors and seniors are on the roster) but its group of young players saw a lot of action last season. We lost eight seniors last year, said UNC head coach Tim Barrera, the winningest coach in program history. So there are a lot of question marks and there also will be a lot of competition for positions coming into the season. Although we had quite a few injuries last year, it meant a lot of our younger returning players got a chance to start and gain experience. Fourteen different players started at least five games last season, and 10 total returnees started a combined 105 games a season ago, which should give the squad a lot of experience against Division I competition this season. In total, 14 players and seven starters return from last year s team that finished overall. Despite graduating their senior co-captains, Shannon Fox (who returns as a student assistant this season) and Kari Hamilton, in 2003, the backfield will see two of the senior tri-captains, Carol Devaney and Kristel Lohmann, return after starting 19 combined games last year. Both Devaney and Lohmann battled injuries through the campaign last year but look to be 100 percent for their final year of competition. They are joined by sophomore Lindsey Phillips, who started nine of 16 contests a season ago. Along with that trio of players will be a pair of newcomers in freshmen Whitney Salter and Kayla Oakley, while another freshman, Kerry Pitt, and sophomore Laura Hassebroek will see action there when not playing in the midfield. Rounding out the defenders are sophomore Erika Hildner and redshirt freshman Katie Seno. Although we lost our co-captains from a season ago, we have a lot of experience in the back, Barrera said. I think the defender position will be one of our strengths this season. Those defenders will be in front of the net which will be guarded by a group of four goalkeepers. Gone to graduation is Shanna Swinehart, who started 30 games during the past two seasons, leaving the position wide-open. Sophomore Chrissy Marvin, who saw the majority of the action during the spring practice season, and junior Laura Knudsen each played in one game last year and will be joined by redshirt freshman Sara Feuerborn and true freshman Brittany Brokaw. The goalkeeper position is wide-open, Barrera said. We have players who saw some time last season and also in the spring in Marvin, Knudsen and Feuerborn. Brokaw was an all-state selection last season as well, so no matter who wins the starter s role, we should be in good shape. The midfield, which also will be packed with experience as all three starters return from last season, led by the sophomore Hassebroek, who was named to the Soccer Buzz All-National team for first-year Division I programs last year. She started 15 games and scored three goals while assisting on another, finishing fourth on Senior Carol Devaney, the only four-year player on the Bears roster, has been a mainstay the past few years in the Bears backfield. the squad in points (7). Sophomore Chelsey Ekenberg started 14 games a season ago and tied for the team lead in goals (5) and was third on

2004 PREVIEW the team in points (11). The third returning starter is senior Cassie Sadusky, who started 15 games in 2003 after transferring from Southeastern Louisiana. Other players who could crack the starting lineup include sophomore Allyson Foisy, who started seven games last season, and true freshmen Megan Miller, Megan Bellendir and Pitt, when she is not playing at the defender s spot. The midfield is rounded out by transfer Annie Osborne and freshman Nicky Harris. Our midfield is a pretty deep unit, and we have most everyone back, Barrera said. We were really young there last year as we basically had a brand-new starting lineup. Now this season, we have a lot of players who have Division I game experience. At forward, sophomore Kady Hydrick, who led the team with 14 points (four goals, six assists) as a true freshman, returns to her starting role as does senior tri-captain Raegan McHugh, who has scored five goals during the past two seasons. Other returners at the position include sophomores Jeanna Andrew and Audrey Rich, who each played in nine games a season ago. Also looking to crack the starting lineup is a trio of newcomers who can score goals in bunches. That As a redshirt freshman, Chelsey Ekenberg shared the team lead in goals (5) and was third in points (11). trio includes freshman Marika Johnson and transfers Jody Alvarez and Natalie Askins. The redshirt sophomore Askins led Pace University in scoring (15 points) in 2002 before transferring to UNC while Alvarez scored 40 goals and totaled 89 points last season at Alfred State on her way to Junior College All-American honors. The real question at the forward spot will be who is going to score the goals this year, Barrera added. We have a captain and also our leading scorer returning at that position as well as some newcomers who can score a ton of goals, so hopefully someone will step up for us. The schedule will once again be a challenge, as the full Division I slate of games includes 18 regular-season matches and two opponents that were in the NCAA Tournament a season ago and finished the year ranked in the top 25 (Colorado and Nebraska). Including a pair of exhibitions, the Bears will play eight home matches this season (up from three last year) as home opponents include regional rival Wyoming, Sun Belt runner-up North Texas and former North Central Conference foes North Dakota State and South Dakota State as part of the Best Western Regency Northern Colorado Classic. Road games include trips to Loyola Marymount, Baylor and in-state rivals Air Force and Colorado College. The schedule will be a tremendous challenge, Barrera said. We play nine teams that finished in the top 105 of the 2003 RPI (294 were ranked) and every game will be a learning experience. Playing three games against the Big 12 and one each against the West Coast and Pac-10 conferences may be a bit ambitious but it will certainly test us and prepare us for the future. We have to work hard to come together as a team quickly this year, Barrera added. We open up with some good competition and roll into a stretch with three consecutive games with top 50 RPI teams in Loyola Marymount, Washington State and Nebraska. There are still a lot of question marks with our team but the team is excited about the challenges it will face this season, Barrera said. Although we are still relatively young, we have players who were tested as freshmen last season, and that, combined with our youthful exuberance, should make for good things during the season. 3

I think that everyone is excited about the challenge of moving back to the Division I level, Barrera said. Last season, in the first full Division I schedule for the program since 1989, the Bears jumped right into the fire, playing 11 of their 16 matches against Division I teams and compiling a record, the first losing season for the program in 10 years was a tough season in the fact that we played 16 games on the road, Barrera added will be tougher, but our players are ready to compete and ready for the challenge. Northern Colorado did defeat Valparaiso 2-1 on Sept. 5 last season, marking the program s first victory over a Division I opponent since topping Creighton 4-0 on Oct. 16, Overall, Barrera has compiled a (.677) record in his first five seasons as UNC head coach. In that time, he led the team to a pair of North Central Conference Championships (1999 and 2001) and a pair of Division II NCAA Tournament berths (2001 and 2002). His Bears squads have also won five consecutive NSCAA Team Academic awards and three straight (four overall) NSCAA Team Ethics awards, set or tied 15 school records and won 13 or more games four times. Barrera led the 2001 squad to the program s first NCAA Tournament victory with a 2-1 victory over Winona State in the first round of the NCAA regional in Winona, Minn. (Nov. 7). Northern Colorado, the 2001 NCC Co-Champions, then lost a 1-0 match at Truman State in the Sweet 16 and finished the season ranked No. 15 nationally. It was also during 2001 that Barrera won his 100 th career match, doing so in a 3-2 victory over NCC rival Nebraska-Omaha (Oct. 13). In 2002, UNC was the only school to qualify for the national tournament and win the NSCAA Team Academic and Team Ethics silver award. That same year, the Bears played host to a firstround NCAA Tournament game for the first time in school history, losing a hard-fought 1-0 match to Truman State and finishing the year with a No. 23 national ranking. During 2002, Barrera earned his 50 th coaching victory as Bears coach with a 7-0 victory over North Dakota State (Sept. 29). With the final victory of that season, a 4-1 win over North Dakota (Oct. 26), Barrera recorded his 56 th

COACHING CHING STAFF victory as Bears head coach to become the winningest coach in program history. In his first year at the helm of the Bears program in 1999, Barrera guided the team to the North Central Conference championship, a 15-3 overall record, No. 19 national ranking and a ranking of first in the Great Plains regional poll. Barrera helped Mandy Nilsen become a twotime All-American at UNC. Nilsen was an All- American performer in 1999 as well as her senior season in In 2001, she was the only Division II athlete to make the NSCAA/Adidas All-American Scholar first-team and she graduated from Northern Colorado that year holding virtually every Bears scoring record. In total, Barrera has coached 13 all-region and 27 all-conference selections at UNC. Fourteen times his athletes have been named academic all-conference and five athletes have garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. In 11 years as a head coach, Barrera has compiled a (.623) record. Before joining the Northern Colorado staff, Barrera served as head coach at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y. In five years at the school, he led the Soaring Eagles to five consecutive winning seasons, posting a (.647) record overall. During Barrera s tenure, Elmira earned its first NCAA and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason appearances in 1997 and In the process, Barrera produced six NSCAA Regional All- American performers and six NSCAA All- Academic Scholars, while his team received academic and ethics awards from the NSCAA in 1997 and While at Elmira, Barrera was also active in the governance of collegiate women s soccer, as he served as the chairman of the New York State Women s Collegiate Athletics Association (NYSWCAA) Soccer Committee. 18 IN REVIEW he beginning of the move to Division I brought a lot of unknowns for the University of Northern Colorado athletic teams. While some teams slowly eased Division I teams onto their schedules, the TBears women s soccer team wasted no time jumping into a Division I schedule, as eight of the teams 16 total games were against Division I teams. After a pair of exhibition games against in-state rivals Colorado and Metro State, the Bears traveled down I-25 to battle the University of Denver. The Division I Pioneers, a 2002 NCAA Tournament participant, took an early 1-0 lead over UNC but could not pull away from the Bears until scoring two second half goals on the way to a 3-0 victory. Four days later, the Bears drove the other direction on I-25 to battle the Wyoming Cowgirls, a team UNC had played regularly in the spring exhibition season but never faced in a regular-season matchup. The Cowgirls scored a goal 20 minutes into the game and made that stand up as the Bears fell to 0-2 on the season. But the first victory of the season for UNC was not far away, as the Bears headed to the Hoosier State to battle the Mid-Continent s Valparaiso. Freshman Mallorie Price struck early in the first half with her first collegiate goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders would end up tying the game before senior Jessica Brennan scored a game-winning goal in the 74 th minute to not only give UNC its first victory of the season, but its first victory over a Division I school in the reclassification process. The Bears capped the weekend in Indiana with a 2-0 victory over Division II St. Joseph s. The next weekend the roadtrip was to New Mexico, where the Bears battled the Division I Lobos to a double-overtime 0-0 draw, improving their record in Division I games to Two days later on the same field, UNC handed first-year program Eastern New Mexico a 5-1 defeat to move to on the year. ENMU did manage one goal in the game which snapped a streak of 294 scoreless minutes from Bears goalkeeper Shanna Swinehart. At the Boise State Nike Invitational two weeks later, UNC found itself up against some top-level Division I teams and dropped a pair of 2-0 decisions to Utah State and the host Broncos. After a 4-0 victory over Regis, which was ranked No. 20 in the Division II poll, the Bears lost a 4-0 match to Creighton, another 2002 NCAA Tournament participant. On Oct. 8 the Bears were final able to play a regular season home match on the Butler-Hancock Soccer Fields. After hosting one exhibition game at home, the Bears had not played a match on home soil for six weeks. What looked like an easy win over NAIA Carroll College proved to be an even match for 45 minutes, as the teams were deadlocked at 0-0 at the break. But redshirt freshman Chelsey Ekenberg scored twice in the second half and freshman Kady Hydrick added a goal to push the final margin to 3-0 in favor of UNC. A trip to Billings, Mont., left the Bears with a 3-1 loss to Utah Valley State, a fellow reclassified team, and an overtime victory over Montana State-Billings thanks to a golden goal by senior defender Shannon Fox, her first goal in almost two seasons. The Bears would close the home season with Senior Day on Nov. 2, when they hosted Division I Colorado College, which was coached by former UNC head coach Erik Oman. The match was scoreless at the half but one mistake led to a CC goal and the Tigers defeated the Bears 1-0 in the last home game for Brennan, Fox, Kari Hamilton, Momi Markus, Keri Stone, Marin Shanahan, Swinehart and Robin Wonner. UNC closed its season at the Reclassification Classic, a tournament that pitted fellow reclassified team Utah Valley State, UC Davis and UNC in a season-ending tournament. The competition was close, as each of the Bears matchups was decided in Soccer Buzz First-Year D-I All-National Team F Ashley Boutte, Southern Fr. F Kim Brown, Sam Houston State So. Player of the Year: Ashley Boutte, Southern Coach of Year: Melissa Heinz, Wintrhop overtime. In the first match, Utah Valley nipped UNC thanks to a goal with less than a minute and a half to play in the second overtime. A day later, the host Aggies scored early in the first extra period to give them a 1-0 victory. Thanks to five goals and three assists on the season, Brennan was able to move into the Top 10 in UNC history in goals, assists and points. She finished her career ranked ninth in goals (19), ninth in assists (12) and eighth in points (50). Swinehart completed her career with 15 solo and one shared shutout. The team may have finished with a overall record but it faced some fierce competition in their first season of reclassification. The 2004 team returns 14 total players who played during the 2003 season including Ekenberg, who led UNC with 14 points (4 goals, 6 assists) on the season. Hydrick, who also returns, was the Bears second leading scorer, with 13 points, and she shared the team goals lead (5) with Brennan.

UNC SOCCER HISTORY Laura Thompson was a two-time NSCAA All- West Region selection and ranks in the UNC top 10 in career goals (21) and points (48). Even though women s soccer is one of UNC s youngest varsity sports, it has already established itself as a program of excellence. The program began in 1979 as a club sport competing under the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and was coached by Jim Kadlecek. Kadlecek took the Bears to the national championships in 1980 where they finished sixth. In 1981, the Bears made it to the regional title game. During its club years, UNC averaged nearly 14 wins a season. UNC s record from was In 1985, the program was elevated to a NCAA Club-Varsity Sport. This gave the Bears a chance to compete as a NCAA sanctioned sport at the Division I level. UNC s first season as a varsity sport was a successful one. The Bears won their first varsity game 2-1 over the University of San Francisco in San Francisco. The Bears finished that first season with a record which included victories over Texas A&M and Denver. UNC also had four exhibition games and won all of them, including two over Brigham Young University. In 1986, UNC found itself among the elite in the country despite it being only its second year of varsity status. The Bears won their first six games of the year and allowed only three goals in those games. UNC ended the 1986 season at 8-5 and ranked 20th in the nation. The Bears finished their last season at the Division I level in 1987 at and a fifth-place ranking in the NCAA Central Region. In 1988, UNC made the transition to the newly created NCAA Division II soccer level. In its first year at the Division II level, UNC finished the season at and ended with its highest national ranking ever. The Bears finished the season ranked seventh in the nation and third in the West Region. The star of that team was Lisa Jacobsen, who was one of 12 finalists for national player of the year (only two of those came from the Division II ranks). In 2003, Jacobsen became the first soccer player inducted into the UNC Hall of Fame. The 1989 Bears team enjoyed another winning year under Kadlecek. UNC finished on the season and was ranked 16th by the end of the year. UNC s eight wins included a streak of six in a row toward the end of the season. The years of were a transition period for the Bears, as Kadlecek would have his 12th and final season with the Bears in In 1991, former assistant coach Erik Oman took over the Bears program. Kadlecek finished with a record in his 12 years of service for the Bears; his record in varsity matches was UNC struggled with a 4-9 record in his final season. Oman, who played one season as a reserve goalkeeper for the Colorado Foxes led the Bears to a record in his first year. Although his Heather Fox was the 1996 NCC Player of the Year, an honorable mention All-American and an Academic All-American for the Bears. 19

20 UNC SOCCER HISTORY first season was a struggle, he would make up for it in 1992 when UNC reached as high as a No. 11 ranking in the country, recording 10 wins, 95 points and 32 goals. Aimee Manderson was the leading goal scorer with 11 and Gari Nolder led the Bears in assists with seven. Oman s final year as head coach was 1993 when the Bears finished a disappointing 5-8 including losses in its last five games. Oman s career record as head coach was over three years. Dana Kusjanovic took over for Oman and rejuvenated the program. In her first year in 1994, UNC started the season with a 7-2 record including victories over UC Davis and eventual Division II national runner-up Regis University. The Bears suffered some injuries in some key areas and struggled to finish the season with an 8-8 record. Even though the season ended at.500, freshman Kelley Hudson did manage to set Jackie Pang was the 1997 NCC Player of the Year after scoring 14 goals for the Bears. the single-season goal mark at 17 (which stood up until 2001 when Mandy Nilsen scored 21). After an 8-5 campaign in 1995, Kusjanovic led the Bears to their first NCAA Tournament berth a year later, as the team finished overall and also won its first North Central Conference (NCC) Championship, going 3-0 in the regular season. The Bears squared off with rival Regis University in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament and found the score knotted at zero following overtime. Although the game officially went down as a tie, the Rangers eventually won 6-4 on penalty kicks to advance to the next round of the NCAA s. That season, Heather Fox was named the NCC Player of the Year and also earned Academic All-America honors (a year after being an honorable mention athletic All-America). A year later, the Bears team repeated its success of the 1996 season, once again compiling a 3-0 NCC mark on its way to the league crown, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. UNC had to go on the road to face Mesa State in the first round and lost 1-0 in overtime. Jackie Pang was named the 1997 NCC Player of the Year after scoring 14 goals in 21 contests. Kusjanovic would coach through the 1998 season (when the team was overall), compiling a career record at Northern Colorado. Current Bears coach Tim Barrera, the winningest coach in program history, arrived on the UNC campus in 1999 and has built a winning tradition of his own. In his five years at UNC, The 1996 Bears squad was the first to advance to the NCAA Tournament. They also won the NCC Championship and finished the year with a overall record.

UNC SOCCER HISTORY Mandy Nilsen was a two-time All-American and ranks as the program s all-time leader in goals (62), assists (33) and points (157). 21 Barrera has an overall mark of including a 15-3 record in his first year as Nilsen earned second-team All-America honors for the Bears. That season the Bears were also a perfect 6-0 in the NCC. The 2000 UNC team finished 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the NCC. In 2001, the Bears advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time and made history when they defeated Winona State 2-1 on the road to earn the program s first NCAA Tournament victory; the team s season ended when they lost to Truman State 1-0 in the Sweet 16. That season the high-powered Bears offense scored a schoolrecord 73 goals, as Nilsen earned her second career All-American honors after scoring a school-record 21 times while Kiha Thomas added 17 goals (the No. 2 mark in school history). In 2002, Barrera led the team to a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance (fourth overall for UNC) and the Bears hosted a home NCAA Tournament match for the first-time. UNC finished the season ranked 23 rd nationally, marking the fifth time in the past seven years the Bears finished the season ranked in the Top 25. The team also won 13 or more games in a season for the seventh consecutive year. The 2003 season marked the team s return to Division I, and the Bears compiled a overall record against a full D-I schedule. UNC earned its first Division I victory since 1989 when they defeated Valparaiso on 2-1 on Sept. 5. The Bears also tied Division I New Mexico later in the season. Barrera s teams have also excelled in the areas of sportsmanship and academics, having won four NSCAA Team Ethics/Sportsmanship awards and five NSCAA Team Academic awards during his tenure. 35 UNC HALL OF FAME In 2003, Lisa (Jacobsen) Loptien became the first Bears soccer player to become a member of the UNC Hall of Fame. Jacobsen, a native of Littleton, Colo., had a standout career and helped put soccer on the map for UNC. From , Jacobsen scored 41 goals and added 17 assists and totaled 99 total points, all of which were school records that stood for a decade. She currently ranks third all-time in school history in goals and assists and fifth in points for a career. During her freshman season in 1985, the first of NCAA varsity level soccer at UNC, Jacobsen scored nine goals to help lead UNC to five wins. In 1986, she scored Lisa Jacobsen (No. 10) became the first Bears soccer player inducted into the UNC Hall of Fame in goals, one in each game, on her way to being named to the Soccer American MVP team. That season, the Bears finished the season ranked 20 th in Division I. In 1987, she earned Division I All-Central Region second-team honors while scoring nine total goals, three of which were game winners, and adding four assists. In 1988, Jacobsen, a four-time all-conference selection, was selected as the Colorado Sportswoman of the Year for collegiate soccer. She was also one of 12 finalists (only two of which were from Division II) for the National Player of the Year Award in women s soccer. Other finalists included Michelle Akers, the FIFA Player of the Century, and United States World Cup team members Lori Henry and Chris Garibaldi. Jacobsen was also named to the NSCAA West Region First-Team in 1988 and was an ISAA All-American selection as a senior. She was one of three Division II players named to the 15-player South squad in a national all-star game. That season she helped UNC to a overall record and No. 7 final national ranking. I am absolutely thrilled Lisa is going into the Hall of Fame, said Jim Kadlecek, Jacobsen s former coach and the first coach of the UNC soccer program. Lisa was fiercly competitive and the more challenging the competition the higher her game was played. She did not wilt in competition. When we played North Carolina, the premier college soccer program, that was one of her bets games of her career. Lisa was one that she rose to the level of competition. She could certainly exploit weaker competition. Because of the high national rankings and the dynamic talent of Lisa, after she was gone it allowed us to recruit quality players and helped the reputation of the program. 33
