History of the Baptist Congregation Established under the leadership of the Rev. Elder Abel Stevens, Sr. in 1811, a dedicated group of 20 parishioners met to discuss the construction of a much needed Baptist Church. Under Stevens leadership, the walls and roof were erected but because of financial restraints, the interior remained incomplete. Seeking assistance to complete the building, both Methodist and Anglican congregations worshiped in the church until 1864 when the church was sold to the Anglican Church of Canada for $1.00 at which time, the church was renamed St. Paul s. For the next 15 years, the Baptist Congregation worshipped with their fellow church members in Phillipsville. In 1879, Delta residents decided that they should have their own chapel and so, on a lot which was purchased for $125 by Nicholas Mattice, a Baptist Chapel was constructed in 1880 with red bricks from the Russell brick yard (now Lower Beverley Lake Park). The church was dedicated on December 19 th, 1880 by the Rev. A. Cameron from Ottawa. Additions to the Church were made in 1929 to accommodate a Sunday School room and in 1997 when the Memorial Hall was constructed. A special service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 15 th to celebrate the 133 rd Anniversary of the congregation in the current building. There will be a potluck lunch following the service. Members of the general public are welcome to attend. Delta Pilot. 5 News from the Lower Beverley Lake Association On July 20 th, Tim Wood, a Species at Risk Coordinator with the Leeds & Grenville Stewardship Council, spoke about the species at risk in Ontario. Under cover of the Bradford Pavilion at Lower Beverley Lake Park, Tim noted that there are over 200 species at risk in Ontario. Of the 7 types of turtles found in Ontario, 6 of these are at risk! The causes for species to be at risk are numerous: habitat loss, fragmentation or land use change (when a highway or new marina cuts through the habitat of a species), introduction of an alien species, climate changes, persecution by humans and road mortality are just a few. Over 70 young people and their families as well as other interested lake residents came out to hear Tim speak. Tim had many models to show some of the species that are at risk but the hit of the morning was a gray rat snake borrowed from Murphy s Point Provincial Park. With a theme of The Lower Beverley Lake Hillbillies, the Lake Association won first prize for their float in the Delta Fair Parade! Thanks to all who helped construct the float and participated in the parade. Members portrayed their own version of Granny, Jed, Jethro, and Ellie May as well as our musicians Kathy and Nick, a few scattered hillbillies and Hal in the outhouse! A big thank-you is extended to Mensen s Farm for donating the use of the trailer. While the Annual Lake Clean-Up was officially rained out this year, there were a valiant few who did venture out. Thank you to everyone who continue to support and volunteer for events sponsored by LBLA. The flotilla returned this year with a hillbilly theme. It was a beautiful day for a ride around the lake. The Annual Picnic was another fun event with lots of good food and some fun hillbilly games... toss the cow patty, whack-a-squirrel (no live animals were harmed), and the frog hop. If you missed any of these events join in the fun next year! Besides fun events, the Association also tests / tracks the water quality and quantity and works with the surrounding municipalities on issues concerning Lower Beverley Lake. 6 News from the The Delta Mill Society The temporary exhibit Mill, River and Flour has been well received. The feedback from guests has been very positive stating that the modules have been interactive, informative and interesting. The Delta Mill Society Chicken BBQ in the park was a great success. A vote of thanks is extended to Lower Beverley Lake Park for providing the facilities. The Stone Mill Café, which is located in the Old Town Hall, has been open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday since July. It continues to be successful and attendance is growing every week. A special thank you is extended to Anne Youldon for volunteering her time and creating fabulous soups and dishes. Bread served in the café and sold at the Mill is made from our own stone ground flour. It is prepared by the Blue Squirrel Bakery of Seeley s Bay and it s delicious! The Old Town Hall was officially opened at an Ontario Trillium Foundation Recognition event on July 19 th with guest speakers Mayor Ron Holman and MPP Steve Clark. There was good press coverage and a fine attendance which included youth from RILTS. Upcoming Events A Night at the Café is scheduled for September 27 th. There will be a $10.00 entrance fee for the live entertainment which is being provided by Tim Murray on piano. Starting at 5:30 p.m., a selection of menu items comprised of local produce will be available for your dining pleasure as well as beer and wine. The Thanksgiving Celebration will be held on October 12 th. The Café will be open and there will be a weaving demonstration in the Old Town Hall along with fresh local produce for sale, a grinding demonstration, rope making and corn shelling demonstrations in the Mill. There will be a blacksmithing demonstration in the drive shed. Delta Athletic and Recreation Society The Delta Athletic and Recreation Society would like to invite new members to join their current team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers! While planning continues for the construction of a new rink surface, there is still quite a bit of work to do! New members are invited to attend the September meeting of DARS which will be held on September 25 th at 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Centre. The Deadline for the November / December Edition is October 21 st, 2013 Submit your Information today to the Park Office! bevlake@ripnet.com We regret that we are not able to accept information after the deadline. 7 Beverley Senior Citizens Club #460 The United Senior Citizens of Ontario has a membership in excess of 300,000 senior citizens in over 1,000 clubs throughout the province. In the mid-fifties, a province-wide seniors planning group convened to address problems of the elderly that were not being met by the programs of the time. Since then, it has grown into an extensive network of clubs, and a growing number of single members at large. The U.S.C.O. promotes the best interest of senior citizens in a variety of ways. It is involved in the education and promotion of wellness, health, fitness, safety and recreation to its members and their associates and to provide a means whereby seniors can work together to have input on issues concerning them. Over the years, U.S.C.O. has been instrumental in achieving such benefits for seniors as Meals on Wheels, OHIP coverage, drug coverage under the Ontario Drug Benefit plan; property tax grants; the Bill of Rights for Nursing Homes and a reduction in car insurance premiums for seniors. At the local level, the Beverley Seniors meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Delta United Church Hall. Starting off with a pot-luck luncheon at noon, members enjoy a social time of fellowship and conversation before conducting a brief meeting. Throughout the month, members gather to play cards, take various bus trips, and network with the other seniors clubs within the municipality. New members are always welcome so come to a meeting and enjoy an afternoon of food and fellowship with your neighbours! Anyone can join the membership of the Beverley Seniors but you must be at least 55 years of age to hold an office. The current officers include the following: President Pat Phillips Vice-President Bruce Ross Secretary Alma White Treasurer Vivian Morris Over 100 senior members from clubs throughout Rideau Lakes join together each June for a picnic at Lower Beverley Lake Park. Celebrations at the Delta United Church Come and join the friends of the Delta United Church on Sunday, September 29 th at 10:30 a.m., as three milestones in the life of the congregation will be celebrated. To start off the merriments, the congregation will be recognized for 185 years of service which dates back to the Methodist congregation of 1828 when visits were made by the Saddle Bag Preachers from Kingston. Secondly, the 125 th anniversary of the current building will be celebrated. And finally, thanks to a Federal Government Community Infrastructure grant, repairs/replacements to the main roof were made, an energy efficient propane furnace and hot water tank were installed, an additional washroom was constructed and a ten burner propane kitchen stove was purchased. Anniversary celebrations will be led by the Rev. David Timpson and Student Minister Mike Putnam with special music by the choir led by Mary Ann Dobrik. Refreshments and cake will follow the service.
