Cats and dogs over 3 years old will be $20 and if the owner is 55 years or older, they re free. November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and Columbia Animal Services encourages people to consider adopting senior pets. 3 SPECIAL EVENTS PLANNED TO CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY IN COLUMBIA The 36th Annual City of Columbia Veterans Day Parade will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. The parade will begin from the intersection of Sumter and Laurel Streets and travel southbound on Sumter Street ending at Pendleton Street near the State House. The City of Columbia will be honoring those who have served and those serving now. The Veterans Day Parade is hosted by The City of Columbia, Parks and Recreation, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. For more information, please call Kim Mitchell at or visit The public is also invited to attend a sculpture dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. at Memorial Park, 700 Hampton Street. Military and WWII vintage music from the Dick Goodwin Brass Quintet will begin at 2:30 p.m. A bronze statue honoring all South Carolinians who served in the United States Navy in WWII will be unveiled and dedicated on Veterans Day. The statue is a gift from Columbia native Henry W. Crede, 91, who now lives in Boston. The statute is in memory of Crede s shipmates who were killed during the war. The sculpture of THE SAILOR was created by Camden artist Maria Kirby-Smith. U. S. Congressman James E. Clyburn will deliver the main address, and Columbia Mayor Pro Tem Brian DeQuincey Newman will accept the gift on behalf of the City and will present the Key to the City to Crede's grandson. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call CITY OF COLUMBIA ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR THE MLK DREAM KEEPER SCHOLARSHIP The City of Columbia is accepting nominations for the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Keeper Scholarship Awards. The Dream Keeper Award recognizes exemplary displays of committed service to the tenets of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The ideals of social responsibility, political empowerment, diversity, racial harmony, nonviolence, and unselfish service must be demonstrated voluntarily by the nominee in support of his or her community and fellow citizens. The nominee must be age 18 or younger and enrolled in school with a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Winners will be announced at the City of Columbia s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 19, 2015, at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park and Community Center, 2300 Greene Street. 6 CITY HOOPS INSTRUCTIONAL BASKETBALL PROGRAM Registration for City Hoops, the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department s instructional youth basketball program, is open for boys and girls ages 3 through 8.The program is an opportunity for youth to have fun and learn basketball fundamentals. Nominations are due by November 15, The Treasured Trees Program seeks to document and preserve trees that have significant value to the greater community, and promote the awareness, benefit and value of trees to the community. The owner/caretaker of each selected tree will receive a certificate at a public Arbor Day celebration at the Governor s Mansion, and some of the trees may be publicized in The State newspaper. SCE&G reports an 89% improvement in reliability in vegetation related outages in areas where trimming is completed compared to a year ago. The trimming guidelines include removing vegetation within 8-12 feet below and beside the power lines and up to 20 feet above the power lines.
