My research draws on the fields of demographics and migration, as well as economic development, governance and public participation. I integrate multiple methods in my research including stochastic models, regional science techniques and qualitative approaches. 2 Katherine Nesse Curriculum Vitae, Page 2 of 6 Current Research Passive Survey Conducted a survey of political yard signs with assistance from graduate students and related the count of yard signs to demographic characteristics recorded in the American Community Survey. Worked with the Flint Hills Regional Council to survey households and housing condition in 7 counties in Central Kansas. Testing the broken windows hypothesis that signs of residential decay are associated with demographic characteristics of the community with Dr. Corianne Scally (The Urban Institute). With Dr. Bill Hsu (Computer and Information Science, Kansas State University) working on methods of computer recognition of residential features. The application of the American Community Survey Evaluated the use of the ACS by federal agencies comparing the statutory requirements of the agencies with the Census Bureau s advice on its use in collaboration with Dr. Mallory Rahe (Oregon State University) Working with Dr. Rahe and Dr. Andi Irawan (Illinois Early Childhood Asset Map, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) to evaluate the accuracy of estimates of the high school dropout rate derived from the ACS.
