g THE spring 2010 panhellenic NEWSLETTER Be United. Be a Leader. Be Greek. Team Orange, 2010 Greek Week winners Team Purple Lip Sync Team Blue getting ready for Tug-o-War Greek Week From April 18th to April 25th, all Greek Houses on campus teamed up to participate in the annual Greek Week. Events included Beach Day, Lip Sync, Penny Wars, homerun derby, soccer, volleyball and many more. Aside from all of the sporting events, Greek Week also helped out numerous charities in San Luis Obispo. Penny Wars ended up raising $2,029 for the SLO Food Bank and the AIDS Support Network. Greeks also donated over 1,768 pounds of food in the canned food drive. The blood drive was a huge success, and we had 169 Greek participants in the Run to Remember and Walk a Mile in her Shoes. Both the run and the walk support SAFER on campus as well as the SARP Center, raising awareness for Sexual Assault victims. Greek Week was brought to an end with the Lip Sync event, where the Dark Green team took first place with their Mario Kart dance. Other themes included Office Space, the Wizzard of Oz, Curious George, Grease, and more. Maragret Pack, a Journalism student at Cal Poly not involved in Greek Life said, I love going to see Lip Sync and the other events. They re really fun to watch and I like that the events support charities around San Luis Obispo. Ultimately, Team Orange was the overall winner! Team Orange included Kappa Alpha Theta, Delta Sigma Phi, Phi Kappa Psi, and Omega Xi Delta. Laura Kramer, Panhellenic VP of Special Events, who coordinated Greek Week with the help of IFC and USFC counterparts, said she is thrilled with the amount of students in the Greek Community that came out to support not only eachother, but the community as a whole. Upcoming Events June 7-11: Finals Week June 12: Graduation Sept : WOW Sept : Recruitment!
Four Awards won at AFLV Conference From April 9th to April 11th, the Panhellenic, USFC and IFC Executive Councils traveled to Costa Mesa, CA where they attended the annual AFLV conference. The AFLV conference, which stands for the National Associate of Fraternal Leadership and Values, is a weekend filled with inspirational speakers that teach the ways to create and sustain a successful Greek Community on college campuses. We were lucky enough to have one of the speakers, Corey Ciocchetti, speak for Cal Poly during Greek Week. At the end of the weekend, awards are given out to councils who represent excellence in their greek systems on their campuses. Cal Poly Panhellenic was thrilled to take home four awards! Our Panhellenic Community was awarded the Educational Programming award for its new member education programs. We were also awarded the Inter-Greek Relations award, which highlighs our efforts to strengthen relationships between the individual houses. Lastly, we were awarded two Marketing and Media showcase awards for excellence in recruitment newsletters and apparel. It was a huge accomplishment to receive the awards, and we hope to bring home more next year. Congrats to everyone for their hard work! 2300 Strong Campaign Takes off at Philanthropy Fair This year, efforts have been made to launch a 2300 Strong Campaign, which highlights the accomplishments of the 2300 members of the Cal Poly Greek community. This spring, Cal Poly hosted its annual Philanthropy Fair, where clubs were invited to showcase their philanthropc achievements from the past year. It was decided to unite all councils to make a cumulative total for the time and money that Greeks put into community service events and involvement. As Greeks together at Cal Poly, everyone should be proud to know that we accomplished a grand total of: $132,416.oo and 15,826 hours toward 32 organizations We should be so proud of the accomplishments made by our Greek Community, and we can t wait to show off our amazing numbers next year!
Sister Twisters After receiving the award for Inter-Greek Relations, we were encouraged to keep up our Sister Twisters even more. Last quarter, we received amazing feedback from each of the houses about what they did with their partner. Here is what our houses did together: Alpha Omicron Pi Kappa Alpha Theta Collected food for the food bank, and made signs to support the Cal Poly Basketball team at their game. Gamma Phi Beta Sigma Kappa Had a canned food drive and went bowling at Mustang Lanes. Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Made Happy Spring cards with the seniors at the Senior Center Greeks Go Green for Earth Day On Earth Day, the UU hosted booths for several clubs that have practiced Green habits. Cal Poly sororities were happy to display the work that we have put in to supporting environmental philanthropies and our habits that help sustain the Earth. Many houses, including Alpha Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Chi and Alpha Chi Omega, chose to volunteer at Growing Grounds, where they helped with planting, cleaning, weeding, and overall landscape maintenance. For those who don t know, Growing Grounds is a transitional facility to help those who have suffered from a mental illness gain skills and confidence. participated in Beach Clean-ups, and also planted Trees at Temple Ner Shalom. At the booth in the UU, stickers were handed out that said Greeks Go Green. The Greek Community was commended at the fair for all of our efforts in supporting our earth and helping out with all of our philanthropic involvement. Open House 2010 Alpha Phi Planted trees and worked at Growing Grounds. Cal Poly sororities looked amazing in their different colors at this year s Open House, on April 17th. Each sorority had a booth to display their houses philanthropy, sisterhood and social events. Many new students stopped by the booths to find out a little bit more about Greek Life on campus. In the fall, Panhellenic is offering a $1000 scholarship to a new member!
Spring Fun with Philanthropies For Greek Life, and most students on campus, Spring Quarter is known for being the best, and busiest time of year. This spring was the host for numerous Philanthropic events, all which had fabulous attendance and success in helping out their charities. Alpha Phi s Red Dress Gala The members of Cal Poly s Alpha Phi, Epsilon Chi chapter put on their annual Red Dress Gala event at the beginning of this month. The event was held at the Dolphin Bay Resort in Pismo. The night started out with a silent auction where guests bid on various baskets. Some of the baskets included tickets to a Padres baseball game, wine assortment baskets, and anything from spa to movie night packages. The live auction was also a successful event. A few things that they auctioned off included: an adorable labradoodle puppy, two barbeques with a fraternity, a custom mahogany door, and weekend getaways including one at a bed and breakfast in Cambria. They raised an astonishing $20,000 dollars alone from this event. The proceeds go to the Alpha Phi Foundation, which benefits cardiac care. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in America and we are happy to be doing our part to take steps toward Heart Disease prevention! Alpha omicron pi s mr. fraternity Our annual Mr. Fraternity philanthropy event was held this April, to benefit arthritis research through the AOll Foundation, as well as to the local women s shelter in San Luis Obispo. We entertained hundreds of people, with a pre show done by the band The Chiller Whales, followed by the greatest male beauty pageant around! One contestant from each fraternity enters to compete in formal wear, sportswear, on stage questions, and talent all in hopes to be crowned Mr. Fraternity! This year s title went to Phi Kappa Psi! Over $4,000 was raised through ticket sales, donations, sponsors, calendar sales featuring the contestants and much more. Gamma Phi Beta s forward for frances This year, the ladies of Gamma Phi Beta held the 2nd annual Forward for Frances memorial walk, to remember an inspirational and loving sister. The walk took place at Meadow Park and all proceeds went to the Frances Chang Seeds of Love Foundation, which benefits Special Olympics in SLO and Orange Country, Irvine Animal Care Center, Woods Humane Society and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The men of Alpha Gamma Rho prepared a delicious BBQ, and Woods Humane Society brought dogs for people to walk around the path. It was a beautiful day in the sun with many atendees and much to smile about.
Sigma Kappa s Frats at Bat On Sunday, May 23rd Sigma Kappa had our annual Frats at Bat philanthropy, raising money for the alzehmeirs association. It was very successful! It was at the chorro regional park, and Pi Kappa Alpha took home the victory over Delta Chi. a message from panhellenic Starting my term in Winter 2010, I could have only imagined what an incredible experience Panhellenic President would be. Being a member of a Cal Poly sorority was hands down the best decision I have made in my college career. The opportunity we have to make a difference is not taken for granted and through the past two quarters as President, I have seen our Greek community constantly reach out to those in need. The leadership within our community continuously amazes me. Alpha chi omega s slo bowl In May we hosted SLO Bowl, our annual philanthropy event to raise funds for the San Luis Obispo Women s Shelter. It was a great day and a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about domestic violence. Delta Sigma Phi won the tournament! The houses have taken it upon themselves to live out the Panhellenic creed and embrace the opportunity for wide and wise human service. We are committed to improving our community and making a difference and have taken it upon ourselves to do continuous service events. Cal Poly s Panhellenic community is incredibly close, which is something unique and inspiring. I couldn t ask for a more amazing Panhellenic community and such strong women to show Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo community what Greeks women are capable of. I can t wait to see what Fall quarter brings with Formal Recruitment and much more. All my Panhellenic Love, Caitlin Rosenberg Kappa Alpha Theta s Be Your Own Hero Carnival We just put on our first community carnival, themed Be Your Own Hero, at Santa Rosa Parkon a Sunday afternoon. Fellow Greeks ran booths ranging from face painting to beanbag tosses to a bounce house. This year was so much fun and we hope to continue this event and see even more growth in community and Greek involvement!
Exciting Updates from our Houses We recently partnered with ZBT to participate in Relay for Life where our members relayed for 24 hours in the fight against cancer. participated in Disney s Give A Day, Get A Day volunteer event, and now we get to enjoy a day at the happiest place on earth! We re excited to share a fun-filled day with our sisters. Alpha phi Aside from the amazing success at our annual Red Dress Gala, Alpha Phi also hosted a car wash to further support cardiac care. We visited every fraternity to wash cars and raise money to support the prevention of Heart Disease. Gamma Phi Beta This year, Gamma Phi Beta recieved 5 out of 5 crescents from the International Gamma Phi Beta Headquarters. This means that Gamma Phi Beta has excelled in all 5 areas of chaper life; risk management, recruitment, member education, finance and scholarship. Only 19 other chapters recieved this honor! Alpha omicron pi On May 8th we walked with our families and sisters at the annual arthritis walk in Atascadero. We raised over $1,600 for arthritis research through donations to the walk. Our ladies also participated in Relay for Life and raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer association. Sigma Kappa Sigma kappa also held a car wash with Delta Sigma Phi and raised money for the cancer society! Chi omega During winter quarter Chi Omega had an amazing work day with the men of Delta Chi, who helped remove ivy, move bricks and other yard work around our new house. We were so excited with the progress that we scheduled a work day for the women of our chapter to attend. We had over 50 fraternity men show up to help us work on our house throughout the day! It was so great to see how much we can accomplish when we work together! delta delta delta The accomplishment that we cherish the most this spring is the fact that we have already met our pledge of $62,500 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in only 4 years, which is 6 years earlier than our goal! With our Kickin' for Cures philanthropy soccer tournament we raised about $2,600, our silent auction at our Parent's Weekend raised $2,800, and our Sincerely Yours letter writing campaign is still bringing in money! Kappa alpha theta Kappa Alpha Theta were Greek Week winners for the second year in a row! This spring, they also welcomed a new Spring pledge class and have been enjoying many sisterhood events. Kappa Alpha Theta has been continuously supporting CASA by donating toys and games for the kids.
congratulations This quarter, we saw some amazing accomplishments on behalf of our Panhellenic houses. Being recognized not only by our councils, but by our University and our Community, Cal Poly Sororities are receiving the recognition they deserve. We would like to take this time to acknowledge the achievements of our Greek Community. Congrats to OUR Award Winners This month, President Baker announced the recipients of the 24th annual Presidents Community Service Awards. Ken Barclay, the director of Student Life and Leadership, spoke with President Baker. Awards were given out in four different categories, where the recipients were highlighted for extraordinary achievements in community service. Winners of the President s Community Service Award for Greek Community Contribution went to: and Alpha Omicron Pi The Greek Community Contribution award is given to fraternities and sororities who have contributed outstanding volunteer services within the San Luis Obispo community, other than annual philanthropic events. We are so extremely proud of the sororities that were recognized for this accomplishment, as it is something to be forever proud of. Along with the Greek Contribution award, President Baker also awarded a Cal Poly student the Significant Contribution Award. This award highlights a student who exhibits excellence in identifying a need, creating awareness, providing a new service and having a lasting impact on our community through volunteer service. We are so extremely proud to announce one of the winners of the award to be Cassidy Nicholls Cassidy is a sister in Kappa Alpha Theta and a member of the Panhellenic Executive board. Cassidy is a passionate and loving friend who constantly exhibits energy and excellence through everything she does! Congratulations Cassidy! Congrats to OUR SAFE ORGS Every April SAFER hosts Sexual Assault Free Environment Organizations training. The SAFE Organization program is designed to give student-run organizations greater awareness and the opportunity to take an active role in the prevention of sexual assault and rape. The program is a week long, and provides training on sexual assault response, bystander intervention, and prevention. Organizations that complete the process of becoming a SAFE organization will be recognized and honored as leaders in the movement to end violence against women. As this is a huge accomplishment, we would like to congratulate: Alpha Phi Kappa Alpha Theta and Panhellenic Executive Council For more information on Cal Poly Greek Life, the Houses, philanthropies and more, visit: greeklife.calpoly.edu To contact our Panhellenic Advisor, please Harmony Carrera at hcarrera@calpoly.edu written and designed by Kristina Benvenuto Panhellenic vp of Public Relations
