Cuyamaca College says Thank You and Bids Farewell to Ron Manzoni, Interim College President Faculty, staff and administrators from Cuyamaca College, as well as District personnel and Governing Board members, attended a touching and moving Thank You and Farewell Mocktail Hour for Mr. Ron Manzoni. Mr. Manzoni served as Interim President for Cuyamaca College from August 31, 2009 through April 11, We are all grateful for the solid and stable leadership and mentoring that Mr. Manzoni provided to the college during the past seven months. As an expression of appreciation, Mr. Manzoni was presented with a gift (an elegant French brass barometer, thermometer, hygrometer with quartz clock) on behalf of the college which was engraved with the following inscription: There once was a man retired Whose life was simple, pleasant, inspired. He was called back to lead By a college in need, Now reclaims life more casually attired. From your friends at Cuyamaca College WELCOME!! Cuyamaca College Welcomes Dr. Stuart Savin as its New President After much anticipation, Dr. Stuart Savin has finally made the trek from Pennsylvania to begin his new duties as Cuyamaca College s fifth president, beginning on April 12. Dr. Savin will be adjusting to Southern California life and life as a Cuyamaca College community member (and coyote) as he waits for his family to join him in June. A formal welcome reception to be held at the college is being planned for May. 1

2 President s Report to the Governing Board April 20, 2010 Cuyamaca Faculty Member Honored by WalkSanDiego Cuyamaca College faculty member and Lemon Grove Mayor Ms. Mary Sessom has been selected to receive a Golden Footprints Special Achievement Award by the WalkSanDiego Board of Directors. The Award will be presented at WalkSanDiego s Annual Gala to be held on Thursday April 22 at Top of the Park, Park Manor Suites. The Special Achievement Award is made in recognition and appreciation of the major contribution Ms. Mary Sessom has made successfully promoting and achieving more walkable communities both in Lemon Grove and the region. Second Successful Year for the Sustainable Urban Landscape Conference The 2 nd Annual Sustainable Urban Landscape Conference was held on Thursday, March 11 at Cuyamaca College and attended by 150 members and students of the landscape industry to hear the latest advances in sustainable practices, materials, and projects. On Friday, March 12, participants boarded busses to tour sustainable sites at Solar Turbines and Santa Luz in north San Diego County. The conference was presented through the efforts of the Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture program, the University of California Cooperative Extension Service, the Cuyamaca College Botanical Society, and the Cuyamaca Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Special appreciation is also extended to the Cuyamaca College Foundation which co sponsored the event. SolidWorks Professional Workshop The CADD Technology and Surveying Department organized a 2 day workshop on 3D Solid Modeling SolidWorks Professional Workshop on February 27 and March 6, The goal of the workshop was to teach the participants how to professionally build parametric models of parts and assemblies by using SolidWorks software. At the end of the second day, the workshop participants were able to take a 3 hour certificate exam leading towards a Certified SolidWorks Associates certificate. Most of the workshop participants were Cuyamaca College students. The CADD Technology and Surveying Department is planning to organize similar workshops annually. 2

3 Cuyamaca Hosts Southern California Regional Botball Tournament Cuyamaca College hosted the Southern California Regional Botball Tournament. Students, teachers and parents began arriving well before the 8:00 a.m. registration time, in plenty of time to prepare for the first competitions. Twenty nine teams came from private, public and charter middle and high schools to complete, each trying to outmaneuver the others by having their robots rescue the most little yellow ducks, green frogs, and Mr. Botball from oil spills throughout a white plywood sea. While most teams were from Southern California, including 14 from San Diego County, there were also 15 teams from outside the county, including one from Mexico City. The event was coordinated by the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics, the San Diego Science Alliance, and Cuyamaca College. Approximately 180 participants were present, as well as another 120 parents, friends, coaches, and judges. Student Outreach Update The Cuyamaca College Outreach Department has been busy throughout the month of March. The Outreach Department welcomed 18 students from Mountain Empire High School and 36 students from El Capitan High School with fun filled and informational tours of the Cuyamaca College campus. In addition, Outreach also worked with the Child Development Center to offer an informational and interesting special campus tour to a group of 35 students from Granite Hills High School. Student Ambassadors conducted a total of 24 different peer advising sessions within the Grossmont Union High School District. Additionally, Outreach conducted a total of 2 informative classroom presentations, one at Granite Hills High School and one at Helix Charter High School. The Outreach department also conducted its first installment of its Cuyamaca Link program at all 5 participating high schools in the Grossmont Union High School District. Supplementing the Cuyamaca Link Orientations were four application workshops conducted by the Student Ambassadors allowing all Cuyamaca Link students to complete applications to the college. Granite Hills High School invited Outreach to speak at the Sophomore Parent Night where parents and high school seniors were given an informative presentation. Outreach also participated in Madison High School s deaf and hard of hearing transition fair as well as Morse High Schools senior exhibition day. Lastly, Outreach conducted prospective student tours and a special tour for the MCAS Miramar Youth Teen Center. Resident Sculptor Cuyamaca College s own mailroom processer, Mr. Frank Sundstrom of Administrative Services, is an accomplished sculptor. His piece titled, Just Another Teapot, was recently published in a book titled Dry Glazes by Jeremy Jernegan. The piece itself is part of a larger grouping called Classroom. The teapot size: 9 x 2.5 x 7 inches. 3

4 Senior High Math Field Day The Math Field Day has been hosted by Cuyamaca College for the past 8 years and took place in the Cuyamaca College STEM Achievement Center. It was great hosting the entire event in one location and having the opportunity to showcase the beautiful facility to the participating high schools. Coaches, parents and students were all very impressed! Ten high schools took part, including Canyon Crest High School, Helix High School, La Jolla High School, Mira Mesa High School, Patrick Henry High School, Rancho Buena Vista High School, San Diego School of International Studies, Scripps Ranch High School, West Hills High School, and West View High School. Ninety five high school students competed in the event and 10 high school teachers/coaches came in support of their teams. Over 35 medals and 4 trophies were awarded to the students and schools. The top 5 team finishers in the competition were: First Place: Canyon Crest High School Second Place: Scripps Ranch High School Third Place: La Jolla High School Forth Place: Mira Mesa High School Fifth Place: Patrick Henry High School Four community colleges and close to 20 community college instructors volunteered to create and run the events which comprised the Field Day: 1. Cuyamaca College: Short Course Engineering, Technology Tandem and Statistically Speaking 2. Grossmont College: Rapid Transit 3. Mesa College: Dual Dig One 4. Southwestern College: Dual Dig II The overall coordination, promotion, and organization of this Math Field Day event was through the efforts of Cuyamaca College faculty Tammi Marshall and Eric Preibisius. The event is sponsored, funded, and promoted by the Greater San Diego Mathematics Council, the California Mathematics League, and Texas Instruments. Additionally, the following instructors from Cuyamaca College volunteered and helped in the organization of the event: Tammi Marshall, Terrie Nichols, Scott Eckert, Dan Curtis, Jen Curtis, Inwon Leu, Bryan Elliott, Chris Obyrne, Eric Preibisius, Duncan McGehee, Ryan Moore, and Mike Higgins. Cuyamaca College Health and Wellness Fair The annual Cuyamaca College Health and Wellness Fair was held on April 13 and was a great success as judged by students, staff, and vendors. Student Health Services arranged for a wide range of vendors to offer information, services, and product samples to the attendees. These included massages by Body Work and Health, a chiropractic assessment by Dr. Wise, herbal samples from Sprouts, frozen yogurt from Yo yos, and a wealth of information from the American Cancer Society, Depression and Bi polar Support Alliance, Women s Resource Center, and Family Health Centers of San Diego. Public Health Services also encouraged vaccination 4

5 and hand washing, and the San Diego Blood Bank was present for their quarterly blood drive. Concord Medical Department brought ten students to assist with health screenings including blood pressure and hemoglobin, provide safety information, and help teach the kids from the Child Development Center about sun protection by making UV sensitive bead bracelets. Special appreciation is extended to Ms. Wendy Simmons, student hourly worker, who has taken on the role of Health Fair Coordinator for the past several years OH Hosts Certified Landscape Technician Test The Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture program hosted the Professional Landcare Network s (PLANET) Certified Landscape Technician (CLT) Test at the college on Saturday, April 10, The semi annual event brought out over 150 members of the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) and their employees from all over California for the tests to serve as participants and judges. Cuyamaca College is only one of two sites in the state, and the only community college in the state, to host the tests. Cuyamaca College to Host Delegation from South Africa The San Diego Center for Economic Education at Cuyamaca College will be hosting four education leaders from the Republic of South Africa from April 26 to April 29, The delegates are Economics Lecturer Mduduzi Eligious Biyase and Senior Economics Lecturer Arnold Wentzel from the University of Johannesburg, and Senior Education Specialists Mmapule Mary Marikie Mokgoatlheng and Moeketse Christopher Molete from the North West Department of Education. The delegates from the Republic of South Africa will learn about the structure of the Council for Economic Education (CEE) network (of which the San Diego Center for Economic Education at Cuyamaca College is a part), the network s role in economic education delivery in the United States, and see economic education in action in local classrooms. An open forum at Cuyamaca College is planned for Tuesday, April 27,
