We had well over 100 participants attend the conference, 23 breakout sessions, 8 poster sessions, and 1 amazing keynote. The keynote presentation from Barbara Dougherty has finally been posted on the HCTM website (hctm.org). Many people mentioned that they were rejuvenated and ready to try something out in their classrooms. It was exciting to hear the buzz of math talk around the campus. I hope that you learned something new or solidified your thinking and are able to bring something back to your classroom or to use in your current position. I have a bunch of thank yous to make. Thank you to everyone who gave up their time and energy to present, volunteer, or share a poster. Thank you to all those that donated prizes and goodies for the participants Cengage/National Geographic, ORIGO Education, Zippy s, California Pizza Kitchen, and Ruby Tuesday. Lastly, a special thank you to Cengage/National Geographic for sponsoring the continental breakfast for the conference. We appreciate all the help and sponsorship. The next HCTM conference is right around the corner! We are currently planning the Fall 2018 HCTM conference, to be held at Iolani School on Saturday, September 15, Speaker proposals are now being accepted at hctm.org, or if you are interested in volunteering to help out at the conference, please any one of the HCTM Board members with your name and contact information. Thank you to those who submitted their evaluations for the conference. We hope to use your feedback in planning the next conference, which is coming up soon! Donʻt forget! 2 2018 HCTM Annual Conference January 27, 2018 at Moanalua High School Over 100 teachers from around the state gathered at Moanalua High School for a wonderful conference experience. Keynote speaker, Dr. Barbara Dougherty, delivered a thought- provoking presentation about teaching mathematics as a set of rules that may be short- lived in students mathematical understanding. Mahalo nui loa to Dr. Dougherty for sharing her wealth of knowledge, expertise and national experience! It was a day full of great sessions and activities for mathematics teachers to learn new techniques, frameworks and strategies. Sessions included discussions on interactive notebooks, investigating mathematics in outdoor spaces, ethno- mathematics, Desmos, and so much more.

5 Math Competitions Results of the MathCounts Competitions Jean Okumura, Two- Year College Director MathCounts is a national math enrichment, club, and competition program for grades 6 8 that is currently in its 35 th year. Founding sponsors are the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Foundation. National sponsors are Raytheon Company, National Society of Professional Engineers, CAN Foundation, Phillips66, Northrop Grumman Foundation, Department of Defense, Texas Instruments Inc., Art of Problem Solving, and Next Thought. The title sponsor of the MathCounts National competition is the Raytheon Company. Oahu Chapter Competition The MathCounts Oahu Chapter Competition was held on Saturday, February 10 at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama. Twenty-seven schools sent a team of 4 mathletes to this competition. In addition, schools could send up to a maximum of 6 individuals. There were about 238 mathletes who converged on Kamehameha s Kapālama campus. The top 6 team winners were: 1. Washington Middle School 2. Highlands Intermediate 3. Iolani School 4. Punahou School 5. Kamehameha Middle School 6. Kapolei Middle School The top 5 winners based on the written portion of the competition were: 1. Minjae Seo - Wahington Middle School 2. Jared Lo - Punahou School 3. Jordan Wong - Washington Middle School 4. Noah Chung - Punahou School 5. Adam Inamasu - Washington Middle School Hawaii State Competiton The MathCounts Hawaii State Competition was held on Saturday, March 10 at Kamehameha Schools - Kapālama. Besides the top 6 schools from the O ahu Chapter Competition, the neighbor island schools participating were Waiakea Intermediate School (Big Island) and Seabury Hall (Maui). Individuals who were high scorers from the chapter competitions also participated in the state competition. They included Gregory Brown and Daelyn Deluz from Pa auilo School (Big Island), Akila Iguchi from Iao School (Maui), Sophia Otsuka from Maui Waena Intermediate School, and Zachary Tyrrell and Ryan Vanairsdale from Washington Middle School.

6 The top three schools from the State competition were: 1. Washington Middle School Oahu 2. Punahou School - Oahu 3. Iolani School Oahu The top four individuals based on the written and oral portions of the State competition were: 1. Minjae Seo Washington Middle School 2. Felicity Zhou Washington Middle School 3. Jared Lo Punahou School 4. Taylor Ann Agena Highlands Intermediate School These 4 mathletes will represent the state of Hawaii in the 2018 Raytheon MathCounts National Competition that will be held on May at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downton Hotel. The coach for this year s Hawaii team is Mr. Sung Park from Washington Middle School. Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to the Hawaii team when they compete in the MathCounts National Competition! For Students We're happy to announce that Project TEAMS is currently accepting applications for a FREE 3-week STEM summer program for high school students. Date: June 4-22 (9:00 am - 3:00 pm) Location: University of Hawaii at Manoa campus *Complimentary transportation from Leeward and/or Central district schools may be available Project TEAMS is designed for: current high school students (Grades 9-12) students with disabilities or learning assistance needs enrolled in diploma track classes has a "C" or better in any science or technical education course taken at any time during their high school career During our summer program, students will: engage in hands-on activities from a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields;; develop academic and other life skills, such as communication, goal-setting, and self-advocacy;;

7 prepare for college by learning about different types of colleges, scholarship options, and disability resources on a college campus;; explore different career pathways in the STEM fields;; listen to guest presentations by working STEM professionals;; and visit on-campus STEM laboratories and centers.
