Growing up in Clarendon, Jamaica education to my family was not important. My parents did not have an education and my siblings all dropped out before they got to high school. I too was on the same path, but realized I that I wanted something more. I went to high school and it was there that I realized I did not have the basic literacy and numeracy skillto function. I would conceal myself behind my classmates because I was terrified of being called on to read. It was not until I was placed in a remedial class that I realized that I needed help. I enrolled into a basic literacy class. After working hard in this program,i was one of the most outstanding students for academic performance for five consecutive years in high school. I also was one of the five students who graduated with honors, an award that is only given to five students every year. Today I am a honor student at my school pursuing a BS in Accounting and will be the first person in my family to graduate with a college degree.
