Welcome to the QS World University Rankings by Subject Report The American journalist arry Allen Smith once wrote, The human animal differs from the lesser primates in his passion for lists. In few contexts does this statement seem more pertinent than when referring to university rankings, and in no other context is a set of university ranking lists to be found with greater scale and scope than the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Ben Sowter, head of QS Intelligence Unit Behind these 30 tables are 90,000 survey responses, 27m paper attributions and almost 11,000 manually verified programs. But the greatest thing about the subject tables is that for almost every university involved there is positive news to reinforce any setbacks, and the results prove that strength by subject is not only concentrated among the top universities in our overall tables. UC Davis takes the crown for agriculture for a second year running, NYU leads in philosophy, University of Wisconsin-Madison in communication and London s Institute of Education tops out the education field in. A total of 65 universities make the top 10 in at least one of these subjects, 248 the top 50, 419 the top 100 and fully 689 fall with the collective top 200. This is a serious undertaking and involves a great deal of time, effort and personnel, but the results are fascinating and we hope of genuine assistance to students around the world hoping to make more informed choices. After all, for most, before considering where in the world they might study, they start with figuring out what subject they plan to pursue. In many ways then, these subject tables make sense as the start of the search. Choosing a university remains one of the single most influential decisions in a young person s life, and getting it right can make the difference between four years of inspiration and fun or four years of frustration and loneliness; the difference between a career that is fulfilling and challenging to one which is soul-destroying, or worse, no career at all. Down the right path lies fortune, fulfilment, rich memories, lifelong friends and for the many who may have been as fortunate as me, love and family. QS believes there is no substitute for first-hand experience, for campus visits or for face-to-face meeting with people from a university, but you can t visit every university in the world. These subject tables should form a key part of a suite of tools used to shortlist suitable options, and for institutions they ought to provide a way to highlight their key strengths and give a much larger number of institutions a key piece of independent evidence to pass on to students to stake their claim to being the right choice. 5 QS World University Rankings by Subject - Methodology By Danny Byrne Since 2011 the QS World University Rankings have been extended to encompass a range of popular individual subjects. The majority of prospective international students begin their search knowing what they want to study before considering where, so understanding the comparative quality of institution by subject is fundamental to the QS mission to support students in their decisionmaking. QS aims to add more depth, more detail and more subjects to this work year by year and anticipates that these tables will, in time, become more important than the overall rankings. QS has access to three extensive datasets that enable us to drill down by subject area: our academic and employer reputation surveys, and the Scopus data we use for our citations per faculty indicator in the overall rankings. These three components have been combined to produce our subject results, with weightings adapted by discipline. 1. Reputation reputation has been the centrepiece of the QS World University Rankings since their inception in In we drew on over 62,000 respondents to compile our results. aving provided their name, contact details, job title and the institution where they are based, respondents identify the countries, regions and faculty areas that they have most familiarity with, and up to two narrower subject disciplines in which they consider themselves expert. For each of the (up to five) faculty areas they identify, respondents are asked to list up to ten domestic and thirty international institutions that they consider excellent for research in the given area. They are not able to select their own institution. The results of the academic reputation component of the new subject rankings have been produced by filtering responses according to the narrow area of expertise identified by respondents. While academics can select up to two narrow areas of expertise, greater emphasis is placed on respondents who have identified with only one. 2. reputation QS World University Rankings are unique in incorporating employability as a key factor in the evaluation of international universities, and in we drew on over 27,000 responses to compile the results for the overall rankings. The employer survey works on a similar basis to the academic one, only without the channelling for different faculty areas. s are asked to identify up to ten domestic and thirty international institutions they consider excellent for the recruitment of graduates. They are also asked to identify from which disciplines they prefer to recruit. From examining where these two questions intersect we can infer a measure of excellence in a given discipline. 3. per paper Due to the impracticality of reliably gathering faculty numbers broken down by discipline, for the purposes of this exercise we have measured citations per paper rather than per faculty member. A minimum publication threshold has been set for each subject to avoid potential anomalies stemming from small numbers of highly cited papers. Both the minimum publications threshold and the weighting applied to the citations indicator are adapted in order to best reflect prevalent publication and citation patterns in a given discipline. All citations data is sourced from Scopus, the world s most comprehensive research citations database. As of, a score based on h-index has been added to the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The h-index is a way of measuring both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. The index is based on the set of the scientist s most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications. The index can also be applied to the productivity and impact of a group of scientists, such as a department or university or country, as well as a scholarly journal. The index was suggested by Jorge E. irsch, a physicist at UCSD, as a tool for determining theoretical physicists relative quality and is sometimes called the irsch index or irsch number. Further details can be found at QS World University Rankings 5

QS World University Rankings by Subject - Overview By Danny Byrne This year s QS World University Rankings by Subject underline the status of Cambridge, Massachusetts as the nerve center of global academic research. Yet they also point to world-leading departments at a surprisingly diverse range of institutions, extending far beyond the big names that tend to dominate overall university rankings. ome to arvard and MIT, Cambridge was originally named in honor of the UK s University of Cambridge, but this year s results suggest that it has long-since overtaken its namesake when it comes to hosting world-class faculties at individual subject level. Between them, arvard and MIT account for 20 of the 30 number one spots. arvard maintains a slender lead over its neighbor, with 11 top spots to MIT s nine. arvard s dominance is particularly pronounced in the life sciences, in which it tops four of the five subjects: medicine, psychology, pharmacy, and biological sciences. arvard is also the pre-eminent institution in the field of social sciences and management, ranking first in five of the eight subjects: sociology, politics, law, economics and accounting. In the natural sciences, arvard tops the rankings for mathematics and earth and marine sciences. Perhaps surprisingly, the only discipline area in which it fails to take a single number one ranking is the arts and humanities, though it does make the top five in all but one of the six disciplines. While arvard rules the life and social sciences, local rival MIT is the undisputed global powerhouse in engineering and technology, recording a clean sweep of the top spots in four areas of engineering (civil, mechanical, chemical and electrical) plus computer sciences. Other subjects in which MIT emerges as the world leader include statistics, three of the core science disciplines (physics, materials science and chemistry), plus linguistics a discipline in which MIT has led the way, most famously through the work of Noam Chomsky, one of the most frequently cited humanities scholars of all time. The dominance of the Cambridge, Massachusetts institutions is almost total in the STEM disciplines, in which between them they take a remarkable 14 of the 16 top spots. Yet elsewhere the field is surprisingly diverse. Indeed, University of Oxford is the only other institution to top the table in more than one discipline, ranking number one globally in English language and literature, geography and modern languages, all areas of traditional strength. Big names under threat? Since their introduction in 2011, QS World University Rankings by Subject have been honed to more accurately discriminate between strength in a particular discipline area and the inflating effect of overall institutional prestige. This is reflected in the disciplines that fall outside of the sphere of arvard-mit dominance, in which eight different institutions feature at the top of ten different tables. Of these eight institutions, three are placed in the top ten in the overall QS World University Rankings. Oxford takes three top spots, Cambridge is number one in history, and Stanford University tops the table for statistics. s from outside of the global top 20 take the number one spots in all five of the remaining tables. Berkeley maintains its top spot for environmental sciences, while its fellow University of California branch UC Davis ranks number one in agriculture. Another of the big US public institutions, University of Wisconsin-Madison leads the way on communications and media studies. The dominance of the Cambridge, Massachusetts institutions is almost total in the STEM disciplines, in which between them they take a remarkable 14 of the 16 top spots. New York University s reputation as a world leader in philosophy is well established within the field, and it tops this year s table ahead of Oxford, the University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers. And the UK s Institute of Education takes its place at the top of the ranking for education, ahead of Australia s University of Melbourne. The rankings also point to numerous worldclass faculties in Asia-Pacific and Continental Europe, regions that have traditionally been eclipsed by the US and UK in overall rankings. 6 QS World University Rankings

The most successful universities outside of the US and UK in terms of number top-ten rankings are: National University of Singapore (8) ET Zurich (4) University of Melbourne (4) University of Tokyo (4) Nanyang Technological University (3) Kyoto University (2) Wageningen University (2) Other universities to make the global top ten in a single discipline include China s Tsinghua University (materials science), ong Kong University (civil engineering) and Sweden s Karolinska Institute (pharmacy). A further five Australian institutions make the top ten in one subject (ANU, Monash, University of Sydney, University of Queensland and University of New South Wales), as do two from the Netherlands (University of Amsterdam and Delft University of Technology). Latin America s top-ranking institution is Mexico s UNAM (25th in history), while Africa s top institution University of Cape Town, makes the top 50 in education (32nd), geography (34th), law (40th) and English language and literature (50th). This geographical diversity shows that worldleading work is taking place at an individual discipline level at a far greater range of institutions than overall rankings would have us believe.

28 QS World University Rankings

Top Universities by Discipline Area By Danny Byrne Arts and humanities This year s rankings cover six subjects within the arts and humanities: English language and literature, geography, history, linguistics, modern languages, and philosophy. UK universities are particularly strong across this area of study, and University of Oxford is the world s top-performing arts and humanities institution, coming top in three of the six rankings: English language and literature, geography and modern languages. It also ranks second for both philosophy and history, and fourth for linguistics. ome to the Oxford English Dictionary and one of the world s largest English faculties, Oxford s place at the summit of the rankings for English Language and Literature will come as little surprise. Cambridge follows Oxford in second, with both repeating their performance. Edinburgh, UCL and Warwick all make the top 20, while Ireland s Trinity College Dublin ranks 25th. Despite the UK stranglehold on the top two spots, US institutions otherwise dominate the top 10, led by arvard, Yale and Berkeley. US institutions that rank well in English compared to their position in the overall QS World University Rankings include UCLA (10th), Duke (17th) and UT Austin (29th), though in general the rankings confirm that the traditional elite schools remain at the head of the field in this area of study. If Oxbridge and the Ivies continue to dominate English, the picture is very different in philosophy. New York University is the global number one, while University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers both make the top five. The success of all three is driven by academic reputation, reflecting a recognition by specialists within the field of their outstanding research faculty. s in the field of geography rate London School of Economics as the global number one, but Oxford s superior employer reputation and citation rates push it into the top spot. Cambridge, Durham, UCL and the University of Manchester all make the top ten, showing that this is a field in which the UK is currently the world leader. Geography degree programs are far less common in the US, where the subject is often incorporated into other areas of the humanities and social sciences. The two US institutions that currently offer world-leading programs in geography are California institutions Berkeley (5th) and UCLA (6th). MIT s reputation in linguistics is closely linked to the ground-breaking work of Noam Chomsky, one of the most cited humanities scholars of all time, and it takes the number one spot with a perfect score for academic reputation. Engineering and Technology MIT is the clear world-leader in engineering and technology, completing a clean sweep of number one spots across the four areas of engineering (chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical) plus computer science. Interestingly, MIT performs significantly more strongly across this area of study than its rival and fellow specialist California Institute of Technology. Asian government investment in higher education has centered on the high-impact STEM disciplines in recent years, and the rankings

reveal several world-class departments across the region. National University of Singapore makes the global top ten in all five of the engineering and technology disciplines, with its highest position coming in chemical engineering (5th). Fellow Singapore institution Nanyang Technological University ranks 10th for electrical and 12th for mechanical engineering. Asia accounts for ten of the top 30 institutions in chemical, civil and electrical engineering, and eight in mechanical engineering, showing that several institutions throughout the region can now be considered serious global players. While there is still no Asian university in the top 20 of the overall QS World University Rankings, ong Kong alone has three institutions in the top 20 of this year s ranking for computer science: KUST (11th), KU (14th), and Chinese University of ong Kong (18th). Elsewhere, ET Zurich underlines its position as a world-leader in the STEM disciplines, with high positions in this year s rankings for electrical engineering (5th) and computer science (8th). Life Sciences and Medicine If MIT dominates the field of engineering and technology, arvard is the undisputed number one in life sciences and medicine, topping the tables for biological sciences, medicine, psychology, and pharmacy and pharmacology. The only ranking in this field of study with a different name at the top of the table is agriculture, which is topped for the second year running by University of California, Davis. The relatively specialized nature of agricultural studies means this is one of the most distinctive-looking tables in this year s rankings, with a collection of big US public universities dominating the top ten. UC Davis is joined in the top ten by University of Wisconsin- Madison, Iowa State University, Oregon State University, Purdue University, Texas A&M University and Ohio State University. Cornell and Berkeley are the only institutions in the top 10 that rank near the top of the overall QS World University Rankings, while the only non-us institution is Netherlands Wageningen University (2nd). Pharmacy and psychology are both relatively strong areas for Australian universities. Monash University (8th) and University of New South Wales (11th) both place well for pharmacy, and University of Melbourne ranks 10th for psychology. If MIT dominates the field of engineering and technology, arvard is the undisputed number one in life sciences and medicine... One specialist institution that ranks particularly well in this discipline range is Sweden s Karolinska Institute, ranking 7th for pharmacy and 16th for medicine. Pharmacy also sees strong performances from several UK institutions, with King s College London (3rd), UCL (4th), University of Manchester (5th), Cambridge (6th) and University of Nottingham (9th) all making the top ten. Natural Sciences The massive research budgets of the leading US private institutions ensure that they continue to dominate this area of study. MIT takes the top spots in physics, chemistry and materials science and arvard is number one in mathematics and earth & marine sciences, though public institution Berkeley tops the table in environmental sciences. Environmental science is also the strongest subject for Switzerland s ET Zurich (3rd). Fellow continental European institution Wageningen University (8th) joins it in the top ten, while the Netherlands Delft University of Technology (19th) and Technical University of Denmark (20) make the top 20. The subject also features strong performances from three Australian institutions: The University of Queensland (11th), The University of Melbourne (12th) and Australian National University (13th). Materials science is a very strong subject for Singapore, with NUS (6th) and NTU (8th) both making the top ten. China s Tsinghua University (10th) and Japan s Tohuku University (11th) join them near the top of the table, while fellow Asian institutions KAIST (16th), University of Tokyo (17th) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (20) all make the top 20. Physics sees several strong performances from continental European institutions, with Switzerland s ET Zurich (11th) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (19th) joined in the top 20 by German institutions Ludwig- Maximilians-Universität München (13th) and Technische Universität München (16th). Social sciences and management arvard is again the dominant institution in the social sciences, topping the tables for accounting and finance, law, economics, politics and sociology. owever, there are also some less familiar names at the top of the tables in this subject grouping, with University of Wisconsin-Madison topping the table for communication and media studies, and the UK s Institute of Education ranking number one in its specialist subject, education. Communication and media studies covers a diverse range of interconnected areas of study, and features a top ten made up largely of institutions stronger in this area of study than they are overall. University of Wisconsin-Madison is joined in the top ten by University of Southern California (4th), UT Austin (5th) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigne (6th=), as well as two of the more familiar big names, Berkeley (3rd) and Stanford (8th). The UK s London School of Economics ranks second, while Singapore s NUS (6th=) and NTU (9th) both make the top ten, as does Netherlands institution, University of Amsterdam (10th). London School of Economics also ranks well for accounting and finance (3rd), where it is joined in the top ten by neighbouring institution London Business School (7th). Australia s University of Melbourne (8th=) and University of New South Wales (10th) make the top ten, ahead of University of Sydney in 13th. Another area of comparative strength for Australia is politics, in which ANU ranks 7th. Politics is also the strongest area for French institution Sciences Po (13th). 30 QS World University Rankings
