2 When the Confederates shelled Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina on April 12, AMERICA IS AT WAR Four young farmers from Iosco Township, Deloss Haviland, Lewis Haviland, Austin Smith, and Daniel Poyer, are among the first wave of Iosco Township men to answer President Lincoln s call for volunteers to defend the Union. The four men soon number among the troops of the 4th Michigan Infantry. Of the four men, only one, Lewis A. Haviland, survives war. His younger brother, Deloss, was killed in action on June 27, 1862 at the Battle of Gaines Mill. Lewis was at Deloss side when he fell. Lewis, who was wounded during the same battle, grabs his lifeless brother s cap before he is forced to retreat. Deloss body is abandoned on the field of battle as the Union withdraws. Deloss final resting place is unknown. The Veterans Administration recently provided this marker in his memory.

4 DIRECTIONS TO WRIGHT CEMETERY Corner of Roberts and Dutton Roads. Gregory, MI. Wright Cemetery is a small country cemetery and has no address. The two closest towns of any size to the cemetery are Stockbridge to the south and Webberville to the north. If you are approaching Cemetery from the South or off the I-94 Corridor Proceed to downtown Stockbridge. From downtown Stockbridge: 1. Follow M-52 North (aka Stockbridge Road / Main Street); go 4.5 miles. 2. Turn East/Right onto M-36 E / Topping Road; go 4.5 miles. 3. Turn North/Left onto Bradley Road just past Plainfield village; go 2.0 miles. 4. Turn West/Left onto Roberts Road (unpaved gravel); go 0.2 miles. 6. Arrive at Wright Cemetery on the northeast corner of S. Roberts & Dutton Rd. If you are approaching Cemetery from the North - off I-96 Corridor From I-96: 1. Exit M-43, M-52 South / Stockbridge Webberville Exit. 2. Follow M-52 South towards Stockbridge; go approx miles. 3. Turn East/Left onto M-36 E / Topping Road; go 4.5 miles. 4. Turn North/Left onto Bradley Road just past the village of Plainfield; go 2.0 miles. 5. Turn West/Left onto Roberts Road (unpaved gravel); go 0.2 miles. 6. Arrive at Wright Cemetery on the northeast corner of S. Roberts & Dutton Rd. DIRECTIONS From WRIGHT CEMETERY to TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Church is located at the corner of W. Iosco Rd. and S. Bull Run Road - Church Address: 8201 S. Iosco Road Fowlerville, MI From Wright Cemetery go East on Roberts Rd. until it dead-ends; go 2.4 miles (road is unpaved.) 2. Turn North/Left onto S. Bull Run Road; go 2.5 miles 3. Arrive at Trinity United Methodist Church on the left.
