Case at a Glance Interview of students Are you involved in any community service or volunteer opportunities on campus? Out of 30 students 21 of them did not do any volunteering or community service on campus. Others do service through their sorority and fraternity Only one person actually went to the community service office and found out about the tutoring services and participated in that.

Why the Gap? Did you participate in volunteering more in high school or in college? All said they were more involved in service in high school Why is it harder in college to get involved? Difficulty of classes compared to High School Not a structured schedule, in high school you were in school from 7-3 and that left the afternoon for service or other activities-in college the classes are spread throughout the day and always changing with the start of a new semester. Was a requirement in some high schools Some high schools organized it for you, was not up to individual Just got lazier in college

Service a Requirement? Do you think it should be a requirement to do a certain number of community service hours to graduate? An overwhelming NO! one student said, it is called volunteering, something someone should voluntarily participate in, not be force to do Another said, While I don t believe community service hours should be required, it should definitely be encouraged to promote future involvement in the community.

What Case Can Do Could Case do anything to encourage you to be a part of more/or any service/volunteering? One answer was hold a community service fair, which Case does (perhaps this suggests that this event needs to be better publicized). If professors organized a service event for a class to participate in. Combine some of the services into some already established communities like fraternities and sororities or clubs on campus so it is not up to the individual to find these opportunities themselves, but find out about them and make it a requirement to do in some organizations.

Addressing Homelessness and Hunger
