The Office of Campus Recreation is recognizing individuals and groups who are making extra efforts to elevate their fitness levels. We commend your friends and colleagues by deeming them UTM Fit. Dr. Heather D. Wilkins Professor Department of Biological Sciences About seven years ago, I began to have problems with my back and sciatic nerve. My physical therapist suggested that I attend water aerobics and swim in the pool, because it alleviated stress on my joints while allowing me to build muscles around the weak area in my back. Since then I regularly attend water aerobics and have worked up to swimming three to five miles a week. The benefits have been amazing. My mobility and endurance have greatly increased while my back and sciatic issues are minimized. In addition, I have lost over 30 pounds and hope to use swimming to continue my weight loss journey. Heather s Motivation: Before I began swimming regularly, I really didn t have an exercise regime that I enjoyed and looked forward to, but now that I know how much I enjoy and look forward to the time I spend at the pool, it is much easier for me to make it a regular part of my day.
