Now, more than ever, the HENAAC Conference continues to be an imperative to recruit top, technical STEM diversity. The conference attracted students, faculty and administrators from 123 colleges and universities, including top-ranked U.S. News & World Report institutions, Research I Institutions, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. and 2-year colleges. The competition theme was Super Heros. The winning teams were Verizon (First Place), Chevron (Second Place), U.S. Army RDECOM/Army Materiel Command (Third Place). The David Burris Tribute Award, a peer-selected award in recognition of a coach who shines as best mentor to the students, was presented to Melissa Minneci of the Northrop Grumman Alpha team. Number of Students Registered and Waitlisted 411 Number of Coaches/Judges 72 Number of Student Awards 33 Number of Teams (Students) 24 (267) Special Recognition Awards 8 CAHSI Hackathon The CAHSI Hackathon, a two-part competition, was sponsored by Lockheed Martin and Rockwell Collins. This cyber-security, attack-oriented competition of Capture the Flag placed CAHSI affiliated students in teams against each other to solve challenges related to computer security. Participants attended a mandatory Cybersecurity workshop, and then participated in either a Novice or Advanced game of Capture the Flag. There were three winning teams in each of the two levels Advanced and Novice. Number of Students Registered and Waitlisted 278 Number of Awards 6 Winning Team(s) 6 8 th Annual Research Posters Competition The 8 th Annual Research Posters Competition was sponsored by the Intel Corporation, The Boeing Company and the U.S. Army RDECOM. Students competed in either the undergraduate or graduate competition and awards were provided in both Science and Engineering categories. Number of Submissions 101 Number of Presenters 81 Number of Awards 14 HENAAC SCHOLARS Over 1,400 applications were received for the HENAAC Scholars Program, which offers both merit-based academic scholarships and STEM Civic Leadership Scholarships. The application period runs from February 1 April 30. This year, GMiS surpassed $3.6M in direct scholarship support to over 1,300 college students, through the HENAAC Scholars Program! GMiS subsidizes over $800 per HENAAC Scholar in travel, lodging and registration to attend the conference. 5 GMiS awarded $561,743 in travel, registration, scholarships and awards! TRAVEL & REGISTRATION GRANTS Over $126,950 was awarded in travel and registration grants to college students and K-12 educators. Registration grants ranged from partial to full support. This amount was in addition to $434,793 provided in merit-based scholarships, STEM civic leadership scholarships, and competition awards. Dr. Adriana C. Ocampo, Lead Program Executive, New Frontier Program Science Mission Directorate Planetary Science Division from NASA Headquarters was honored as the 2017 HENAAC Scientist of the Year. GMiS honored Dr. Julio A. Navarro, Senior Technical Fellow from The Boeing Company as the 2017 HENAAC Engineer of the Year. The Middle School Viva Technology was sponsored by Shell Oil Company with co-sponsorship from the Dow Chemical Company. The High School Viva Technology was supported by the U.S. Air Force - STEM. The K-12 Educators Institute was sponsored by the Northrop Grumman Foundation. The K-12 Education Workshop was presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation.
