Tremayne T. Price President SUNY Student Assembly Executive Board Spring Semester Report Executive Summary. This report is a compilation of the activities of the Office of the President since Fall Conference. This has been a very busy semester and I have tried to make this report as succinct as is humanly possible while trying to be mindful of the length. This report details my Board activities since November including Board meetings as well as a special meetings that were held. The report also details all the relevant activities of the various committees that I sit on at the system-level. SUNY Board of Trustees November Meeting. The SUNY Board met on November 14 th and 15 th at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. The following campus(es) had new presidential appointments: Cayuga Community College (interim) College of Environmental Science & Forestry Upstate Medical University (interim) Alfred State College In addition, the SUNY Board also passed the operating and capital budget requests for the academic year. The Board also approved next year s round of rational tuition increases as required by the NY2020 legislation. Tuition is scheduled to increase by $300 this upcoming year. I abstained from voting. The full summary of all the actions taken by the Board can be found below: Special December Committee Meetings. The Board Chairman called a meeting of the Executive Committee in December as well as special meetings of the Audit Committee and the Academic Medical Centers/Hospitals Committee. I was unable to attend the meeting. The Executive Committee was in executive session for the majority of the meeting and primarily discussed personnel as well as legal matters with SUNY s General Counsel William Howard. The following campus(es) has new presidential appointments: 3 P a g e

Westchester Community College (interim) January Meeting. The SUNY Board met on January 13 th and 14 th at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The following campus(es) had new presidential appointments: Schenectady County Community College (acting) The full summary of all the actions taken by the Board can be found below: The Chancellor also gave her State of the University Address on Tuesday, January 14 th at the Empire State Plaza. Some of the biggest priorities for the upcoming year include Open SUNY of which the following 8 programs are being rolled out for the initial launch: SUNY Broome Community College: AAS in Clinical Laboratory Technician SUNY Delhi: BS in Nursing Empire State College: BS in Business, Management, and Economics: Human Resources Management Empire State College: BS in Science, Mathematics, and Technology: Information Systems Finger Lakes Community College: AAS in Tourism Management SUNY Oswego: Masters of Business Administration SUNY Oswego: MBA in Health Services Administration Stony Brook University: BS in Electrical Engineering The Chancellor also outlined SUNY s goal for expanding its SUNY Works program to all the Fortune 500 companies in NY State. She is also forming a Task Force on system-wide diversity to examine the nature of diversity in the system as well as develop some strategic goals in order to improve diversity system-wide. The full speech can be found here: LICH Update. Governor Cuomo, SUNY Chairman McCall, and NYC Mayor de Blasio jointly announced this past week that a deal has been reached to resolve all pending litigation regarding SUNY Downstate s Long Island College Hospital. Under the agreement announced Thursday, an expedited bidding process will be used to find a new owner. The deal must be approved by SUNY trustees and by the court. Bidders will be required to offer medical care at the site but it was not immediately clear whether they would have to run a full-service hospital as community activists have demanded. The agreement will allow SUNY to cease operating Long Island College Hospital by this May. 4 P a g e

March Meeting. The SUNY Board is scheduled to meet March 18 th and 19 th in Albany (the May meeting has been rescheduled to take place at Stony Brook University) SUNY Student Assembly Fall Conference. Conference was mostly successful. Despite some concern about the conduct of the meeting due to the confusion of an untimely election, we got through all the business that was planned as well as weighed in on the Seamless Transfer discussions currently taking place in the system. The preliminary report from the Task Force on Organizational Structure was also very well received and there were many students interested in getting further involved with the process. The non-business portions of conference went off relatively well. There were very few complaints about that portion of conference. The evening banquet was one of the best attended in my 6 years attending Student Assembly conferences. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the only complaint was that there was too much chicken being served throughout the weekend. Kudos to the former Acting Vice President Anna Lubitz and the Conference Committee for all their hard work and dedication. It paid off. SUNY Committees etc. Also, during the month of December there was a meeting of the Chancellor s Cabinet as well as a meeting of the SUNY President s held in Albany at the Rockefeller Institute of Government. The Provost s Open SUNY Advisory Committee has been meeting every few weeks in preparation and since the Open SUNY launch this semester. I serve on the Quality Assurance Subcommittee which has developed a rough draft of the metrics by which future Open SUNY programs will be assessed for readiness to be a part of the overall Open SUNY initiative. I am also working to have at least an additional student on the Open SUNY Advisory Committee in addition to myself. I will continue to keep you informed in the progress on that front. The University Faculty Senate had a plenary session January 25 th and 26 th at the University at Albany. Of note, the faculty are planning on endorsing our resolution on Textbook Affordability that we passed during our Fall Conference. They are also looking to find ways to partner with the Student Assembly on promoting awareness about violence and sexual assault on our campuses and ways to improve the safety of our student body. Their diversity committee was also interested in finding ways to partner with us on advocating to our federal legislators on blood donor equality. The SUNY Voices Conference Planning Committee discussed ways to better tie in studentrelated issues and themes into the conference to make the conference more of a draw for students. We are currently working on developing a student panel to discuss issues in shared governance for students. The conference is scheduled for April in Albany. 5 P a g e

The Campus Governance Leaders Orientation, also a SUNY Voices initiative, discussed incorporating students this coming year into the SUNY Voices orientation. This is still in the early stages and we are currently trying to find ways to adapt the strictly faculty-oriented program to also be relatable to new student leaders throughout the system. This orientation is scheduled for some time in June. The quarterly meeting of SUNY Presidents was cancelled due to inclement weather and has yet to be rescheduled but the primary topic of discussion was going to be student access, completion, and success with a key topical area revolving around internships/co-op opportunities through programs such as SUNY Works. Met with the Gates Foundation to discuss the impact of Open SUNY on students as well as the implications of online education to current and future students. All feedback is being utilized in relation to a grant from the Gates Foundation for various aspects of ongoing development of Open SUNY. Chancellor s Cabinet has met several times (generally once a month) with the primary topic of discussion being the System Administration budget and the re-evaluating how the strategic priorities of System Administration should and do impact budgetary decisions. Under the direction of Chancellor Zimpher, System Administration is undergoing a process of realigning the budget with current administration priorities to cut down on overall administrative waste and non-strategic or initiative driven budgetary decisions. Upcoming Meetings: Chancellor s Cabinet Meetings Provost s Open SUNY Advisory Committee Faculty Council of Community Colleges Plenary University Faculty Senate Plenary If you have any questions regarding anything contained within this report, or would like further elaboration on anything, please contact me at tremayne.price@studentassembly.org. 6 P a g e

Cut cost all year by using vans, and getting creative with transport to save some money. Submitted and Presented Budget Reports at all meetings, including a post-conference breakdown of expenses as well as the proposal for next year. Arranged and will carry out the Silent Auction. Assisted in issues with reimbursement with our advisor when needed. To date we have no outstanding debts, are current on all our bills, and have a nice reserve for transitional. This year for the first time in a long time, we will not need to roll over any cost on next years administration or dip into our RF account. Assisted the President with anything request of this office. Meetings attended (please summarize): 1. Post Conference to January: This is what we call the void. However, I was busy getting all the figures from conference and making sure we had all our bills paid, 9 P a g e

reimbursements filed, and budget reports up today. Worth noting this is the first time in at least 5 years where all schools paid for conference, we have no outstanding debt with fall conference. 2. January: We had our first meeting of the 2014 year at Finger Lakes Comm. College. We did our usual 3 rounds of committee meetings. We had a leadership development session. We tried to have a Finance committee meeting, however did not have quorum due to low turnout. The E-Board met as well. Due to weather this meeting had very low attendance, but it was a productive meetings, because we set the agenda for the remainder of the year. I did present the post-conference breakdown at this meeting, and said I would do so again at Alfred due to lack of attendance due to weather. 3. February: Before this meeting, the Eboard Officers traveled to Albany a day early to go over evaluations in Albany. This was the process that was presented in January for the committee to do, and we reviewed the results. We also had an Eboard meeting and went over our plan of attack for the next few months. Then we met at Alfred State College for our February meeting. Normal procedure of committee meetings in the morning. Finance committee met to go over conference related ideas, as well as the idea of a charity being added to the conference side of things. They were asked to submit them to me. Also sprinkled in that time, the E-Board reviewed directors by the evaluations that were done. We had a very long executive meeting due to a host of issues that happened. We broke from dinner, and had to come back after. Overall beneficial to us finishing strong. Thanks again for Alfred State for covering all expenses for this meeting, saving SUNY SA our normal hotel costs. And thanks for making my birthday as painless as possible. 4. March: We had our final meeting of the year at Broome Community College. We had a internal relations meeting which spanned the whole morning. However we did play catch up after lunch for committees that needed to meet. Finance committee did meet to review the budget proposal at that time. Also, at that time, Vice President Kenney submitted her letter of resignation to the body. We had our normal EC meeting. At this meeting President Price and Myself, as per the bylaws, drafted and presented the budget proposal for the next year. This will be submitted to the Assembly at conference for final approval and review. We then elected Rep Lori Mould to finish the year as Acting Vice President. Extras & Upcoming Projects: 1. President Price has appointed me on the Shared Governance committee for SUNY Voices, along with Acting Vice President Mould. Over the course of this academic year we have met, via conference calls to plan our conference. After a year of hard work by everyone on the committee, we will be having the first annual Shared Governance Conference on April in Albany. Miscellaneous: I also serve as a member of the Executive Board, and Internal Relations as an ex officio member. We have met at meetings for both as well as conference calls when needed for issues that arise between meetings, that is time sensitive. In addition, I would like to take this time to personally thank the members of my Finance 10 P a g e

Committee. We did not meet as much as I would have liked to due to not having quorum, timing, and busy schedule on my part. But your service at end of the year was helpful. Thank you for your hard work so far, the ideas put forth, and your continued watchful eyes. Last, I would like to thank you, the Assembly for electing me to do this job for this year. It has been an supreme honor as well as a privilege to be your Treasurer. I look forward to continuing to be a part of this organization, doing the vital work of us, the students of SUNY. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas feel free to reach out to me at any point. I hold office hours from 9pm to 11pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. My and cell is also available. 15 Riley Gustafson Community College Representative SUNY Student Assembly Representative Spring Semester Report Schools Representing: Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, FIT, Jamestown Summary of Interaction with Campuses (please list by campus): Nassau - From talking to a former student of Nassau, it seems as though their SGA s eboard has jumped ship more than once resulting in multiple contact changes. I m still working on finding an up to date contact. Suffolk - After voicing concerns about each campus feeling left out of SUNY affairs, I began to make sure that representatives from all three campuses, two advisors, and the student trustee began to receive my s. No word on whether or not they can attend conference. Rockland - After having the wrong contact for a semester, I finally got the correct information for the student trustee at the Fall Conference and we were able to communicate. No word on whether or not they can attend conference. FIT - After Fall conference, they asked about SUNY Speaks Up until we got this years advocacy days set up. No word on whether or not they can attend conference. Jamestown - This is my school. No major issues. No communication issues. Jamestown is attending conference. Internal Committees (Please list): Campus Relations, Conference Summary of Committee Work Completed: Campus Relations - Unfortunately much of the semester was spent on internal issues with our former director working with us and the deputies, but former acting vice president Lubitz has stepped up and taken charge of the committee. President Price also asked each rep to reach out to their schools and gather issues that each campus has been facing, so we can either set up resolutions for conference or help with policy writing for future SAs. U-Wide Policy - I was a late addition to the U-Wide policy committee, so I have not completed any work for that committee yet. Conference - The name was my idea and I m okay with taking credit for that! 19 involvement with these committees. I expect that will change as the conference approaches. I joined the Finance Committee at the last (my first) EC meeting. I assisted them with reviewing the budget proposal. Extras: As I was recently appointed to this position and there had not really been any contact made with my campuses from the SA in several months, my main goal was to reestablish contact between my campuses and the SA and if possible, ensure their attendance to the spring conference. As of the writing of this report contact has been established with 3 of my campuses, with a fourth being completed any day now. I am unfortunately still having problems making contact with Colubia- Greene but I hope to have this rectified within the next week, even if it means a campus visit. 27 Schools Representing: University at Albany University of Buffalo Office of the Secretary Marc Cohen Doctoral Degree Granting Representative SUNY Student Assembly Representative Spring Semester Report Summary of Interaction with Campuses (please list by campus): Albany: We ve registered for the Spring Conference and will be bringing 4 representatives and an additional Student Association officer. An issue with a lot of focus recently is the newly proposed Campus Life Fee. The fee would help to improve the quality and amount of programing available for students at Albany. UAlbany is last place among the University Centers, and lags behind many colleges, in such categories as social activities and multicultural programming. There s an additional $60 per semester fee for the program, which has been a matter of much contention. I remain in contact with the SUNY Delegates as well as students and SA officers. Buffalo: In addition to contacting the UB SA President, I ve reached out to one of their SUNY Delegates in an effort to ensure information is being conveyed. We spoke about SUNY Speaks Up, advocacy efforts, progress of the Executive Committee, and a bit about conference. I forwarded her each of the s s Board Members in an effort to keep her school up to date. Internal Committees (Please list): Finance Committee External Relations Committee Internal Affairs Committee Summary of Committee Work Completed: Finance: We recently heard at the monthly Executive Committee Meeting from Treasurer Drumm about the updated budget for this fiscal year. External Relations: Meetings have been set up for the SUNY Speaks Up advocacy day. As of now we have representatives from 4 campuses committed to attending the meetings with state legislators. We ve decided to cancel the April 2 nd meetings as there were very few appointments; all advocacy will take place on April 1 st. Plans for the rally are being hashed out, and will be finalized soon. In addition, we ve discussed the newsletter to go out to SUNY which will include an address from President Price as well as program updates and campus information. Internal Affairs: The majority of our conversation has revolved around a particular personnel matter, which has been dealt with. 27 P a g e
