2 THE COLUMBUS MUSEUM OF ART: SERVING THE COMMUNITY The Columbus Museum of Art s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Because when people and art connect, electricity is generated. The Columbus Museum of Art nurtures that spark and removes barriers between the community and the collection. That is why in 2012 CMA partnered with nearly 90 cultural and educational institutions in Central Ohio to cultivate and encourage curiosity about art, conversations about creativity, and connections among diverse cultures. CMA s free Sundays program, the only one of its kind in central Ohio, broke financial barriers that prevented many underserved populations from connecting with the art that the Museum holds in trust for the community. The Museum has also broken down barriers to experiencing art for the nearly 200,000 yearly on-site visitors. CMA is leading the national conversation in creating a visionary, innovative, visitor-centered model for a participatory 21st century museum. Connectors in the galleries encourage visitors to think, remember, reflect, and act. Go somewhere they ve never been. Do something they ve never done. The Museum is deeply committed to partnerships that create meaningful and long-lasting impact. In awarding the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the Institute of Museum and Library Services noted the following CMA programs that serve audiences of all ages: Artful Adventures, a catalyst to foster imagination for early childhood learners; ARTful Reading, a three-part program that focuses on critical thinking skills for all 5000 fifth-grade students in the Columbus City Schools; ArtLab, an intensive year-long program that mentors teens; Art of Analysis, a program that cultivates better observation skills, communication, empathy, and collaboration for OSU medical students through conversations about art in the collection; and Sparking Imaginations offers art experiences to patients with Alzheimers and their caregivers. Creativity is one or our most important human resources. CMA s new Center for Creativity is a place where creativity is fostered, cultivated, championed, and celebrated. It is a laboratory for our schools, a resource for our families, and a dynamic space for our businesses. It is where you connect with your own creativity. To be competitive in a global marketplace, Columbus must foster innovation and creative workforce. The Center for Creativity embraces its role in cultivating creativity to ensure the vitality of our community.
