3 Professional Development August teachers attended the 5 th Annual Summer Tech and Learning Camp. Conversations focused on the creation of student centered instruction empowered by technology. Specific topics included - Google Apps for Education, Remind, Professional Learning Networks, Formative Assessment w/technology, and much more. Sessions were facilitated by teachers, principals and directors.

4 Teachers as Facilitators Student Leadership Farmingdale School District has moved forward in the development of a flexible learning space in which students engage in inquiry and problem-based learning activities and gain experience with the latest technologies.

5 Connected Educators of Long Island On April 9, educators from across Long Island and the Northeast visited Howitt Middle School for a day of learning. As we embark on new and innovative learning initiatives, we continue to see the potential to accelerate this process in serving as the hub of Long Island Innovation in Education. On this day, many Farmingdale educators and others facilitated deep conversations with the group about best practices and strategies to deepen and enhance learning for our students.

18 Howitt Shapes Their Future Learning: Middle school children have a very unique set of social, emotional, and educational needs. To respond to the needs of the middle school child we have: Created a Makerspace in which Inquiry and Problem-based learning activities take place (and where ideas for classroom maker activities are generated.) Such activities empower them by allowing them to take ownership of their learning, teaching that trial and error is not failure, boosting self esteem, fostering creativity, and creating the desire to be independent learners. Most students have continued their projects during their free time.

19 Future Plans Library Olympics - Teams of four students compete in MakerSpace Challenges. Robotic obstacle courses, 3D modeling to solve problems, engineering design, creative drawing and writing are just some of the challenges. Class Challenges - Premade events that rotate on a monthly basis available for teachers to sign up and bring their classes that set students up in a project-based and inquiry-focused challenge to solve. Lunch Tutorials - mini-class option for students after they eat during lunch to come and learn new software, techniques, or skills. GenreCon - A celebration of different genres such as horror, sci-fi, and fantasy, incorporating Maker activities at various stations, costumes, and so on (Similar to Comic Con)

20 High School Accomplishments... All of our Varsity Athletic Teams have achieved Scholar Athlete Team Status for seven consecutive years in a row- High School of Distinction. Since 2009 Farmingdale High School increased the number of students taking AP exams by 75%. Enrollment in Physics classes for the school year has increased by 100 students.

27 This year, the 4th and 5th grade health classes chose the Ronald McDonald House for their yearly fundraiser. Children from the four Farmingdale Elementary Schools unified under the same cause to help children and families at our Long Island Chapter House.

28 The Wall of Peace Students reached across grades and disciplines in Mrs. Steffen's art classes and Ms. Baltch's ELA classes with the "Wall of Peace" project which incorporated the arts through unconventional peace sign projects and literacy through written peace statements. The purpose of this project was to raise awareness through an inter-disciplinary assignment, which focused on the inter-connectedness of literacy and the arts.

29 Family and Consumer Science Field Trip Restoration Farm in Bethpage taught benefits of organic, local farming as a career to 7th graders. The main goal of the farm field trip was to continue our learning of what it means to eat unprocessed foods and to make informed decisions about what we put into our bodies. Students utilized the maker-space in our school library to make presentations using computers, chromebooks, charging stations, our helpful librarians, and video-editing software.

31 P.O.W.E.R. Time at Farmingdale High School Providing Opportunities With Effective Resources To provide coordinated early intervention services for students identified by the high school staff as at risk of failing and needing additional academic support. 20 students regularly attended each session Over 400 total students took advantage of P.O.W.E.R. Time 1. The Writing Center Coaches for one-on-one writing conferences to help students plan, organize, revise and edit writing assignments. 2. The Math Center Tutors Several teachers are available for short one-on-one tutoring sessions on MONDAYS to help students succeed on homework assignments and classroom assessments. 3. The FHS Library Mr. Glascott helped students locate interesting literature to read and complete research as well as provide you with a quiet place to study and complete homework. 4. The Computer Lab Ms. Rosenthal opened the computer lab in the library Mondays Thursdays to help students with on-line researching, typing and printing. 5. Counseling - Dr. Sperduto offered casual small group and individual counseling to assist students with vocational and educational goal planning in order to alleviate stress.
