1 Annual Report: MSU ID Name Title Member Number Brian Redman President Warren Colomb Vice President Jordan Creveling Secretary Michael Hansen Treasurer Sarah Mondl Web Master Current Student Chapter Members Murphy Breyfogle, Warren Colomb, Jordan Creveling, Michael Hansen, William Kirk, Drew Moen, Sarah Mondl, Gustave Nollmeyeer, Pushkar Pandit, Brian Redman, David Riesland, Stacie Smith, Benjamin Soukup, Caleb Stoltzfus, David Walsh, Geoffrey Wicks Activities Since Last Report Presentation at a local high school May 20th, 2013 ~40 attendees The SPIE chapter at MSU brought a long wave infrared camera and a short wave infrared camera to a local high school. We gave a presentation on the spectrum of light and the properties of different materials at different wavelengths to the AP physics class and the astronomy class. Montana State University Student Research Celebration April 5th, 2013 ~300 attendees Members of the SPIE chapter presented research posters at a local research conference.
2 Science Fun Night Outreach Event November 25th, 2013 ~150 attendees Science Fun Night is organized by the Museum of the Rockies every year where middle school and high school students come in to have fun with science. The SPIE chapter at MSU takes part in this event and helps out by having some presentations and a booth where a popular display is the Infrared camera which seems to fascinate everybody from children to their parents. Engineerathon February 13th, 2014 ~300 attendees The Engineerathon is an event held by Montana State University that brings local middle school students to campus to take part in various engineering-related events. The SPIE group facilitated a hands on demo where students learned about index of refraction by making lenses out of jello. Montana Science and Engineering Festival September 21st, 2014 ~1500 attendees The Montana Science and Engineering Festival was an event put on by the Montana Space Grant Consortium where science, technology, and engineering organizations gave presentations to the general public. The SPIE chapter demonstrated cool properties of infrared light such as the transparency of some plastics.
3 Astronomy Day - April 20th, 2013 ~300 attendees Astronomy Day was an event put on by the Museum of the Rockies and Montana State University. Several Science and Engineering groups from Montana State University had booths at the event displaying their work and some fun games. The SPIE Chapter had a longwave infrared camera to illustrate the properties of infrared light. OpTeC Colloquiums (Held approximately once a month) Montana State University s Optical Technology Centre (OpTeC) hosted monthly optical technology lectures that were open to the public. These lectures were presented by local businesses, MSU professors, graduate students and invited guest speakers. The SPIE Chapter helped out when needed for these lectures. OpTeC Meeting August 17th, 2012 ~60 attendees Montana State University s Optical Technology Centre (OpTeC) hosts an annual meeting for all the groups doing research in optics at MSU and for all the local companies working in Optics around
4 Bozeman. Talks are held by students and professionals regarding their optics research over the course of the day. Meeting ends with Poster Presentation. ILX Lightwave Tour April-23rd attendees Our chapter arranged a tour to ILX Lightwave in Bozeman, MT. ILX is owned by Newport Corporation and they manufacture laser diode/temperature controllers and optical power meters. They gave a short talk about how they operate and followed up with a tour of the facility. We also got to hear about a new full spectrum light source project they started as a future product. Local laboratory lab tours A new thing that the chapter started doing was having the student members give tours of the research labs that they work in. This helped raise awareness of the varied research being done on campus. This year we toured the Optical Remote Sensing Laboratory and the Babbitt Laboratory. This Year s Planned Activities The activities planned for this year involve continued volunteer work for many of the above mentioned events. We will try to continue working with the high school to provide local demonstrations and presentations. We are also planning to set up a couple more local business tours. Our group has shown interest in setting up an additional tour to ILX Lightwave for those who were unable to make last years. We have also spoken with Bridger Photonics and will try to arrange a tour of their facilities. We will work on bringing a guest lecturer to MSU this year, and plan to have our faculty advisor present for the group. Efforts will be made towards getting more students involved in the chapter. Focus will be on getting new, younger students to consider an interest in optics. We will use the large amount of optical research and optics related businesses that Bozeman has to offer as a tool to attract new members. As part of this we plan to continue taking occasional meeting-long tours of research labs within the group.
