2 UMW HERC ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2016 JUNE 30, 2017 Summary In , exposure for HERC jobs widened. HERC s partnerships with organizations such as the Black Doctoral Network, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education ensured that more jobs were viewed by minority scholars. With the launch of the HERC of the Carolinas, HERC s reach was extended into the southeastern U.S. On the techology front, HERC was selected as the higher education representative for testing Google s new job search experience. Enhancements and changes to the website heightened its optimization and resulted in the increased registration of site users. A summary of UMW HERC membership, website utilization and user demographics, national and regional exposure, partnerships and services, professional development, fiscal responsibility, and administration and service follows. The report concludes with a look ahead at denotes items of particular interest for diversity recruitment or retention. The National HERC annual report focuses on national diversity outreach; it can be viewed online. Membership UMW HERC retained all 60 members. UMW HERC reached out to or responded to membership inquiries from the following prospective member colleges and universities in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin: Augustana College, Bethel University, College of St. Benedict/Saint John s University, Concordia University St. Paul, Medical College of Wisconsin, St. Mary s University, South Dakota State University, University of Sioux Falls, University of Wisconsin Extension, University of Wisconsin System, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Stout, University of Wisconsin-Superior, Viterbo University, and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. At the national level, the Central Midwest HERC and the HERC of the Carolinas launched. The Greater Kentucky HERC held its inaugural meeting. Website Utilization, User Demographics, and Updates Approximately 900 jobs were listed per day on the UMW website. UMW HERC posted 5,780 jobs, an increase of 24% over the last full reporting year. Average views per job across all UMW institutions was 418, up from last year, but below FY 15. UMW HERC jobs were ed, via alerts through registration or forwards from colleagues, 1,321,971 times, an increase of 27% over the previous reporting period. 3 Across all HERCs, registered users from 03/01/16 to 02/28/17 identified in the following ways. (Rounding may result in percentages >100.) o 69% had a Master s degree or higher o 38% were from underrepresented populations o 5% were veterans o 5% were disabled A required sign-in page for job seekers was initiated in March In the March-May test period, registration increased 110%. A search engine optimization audit was completed and subsequent changes were made to website content. The publishing of career advice was switched to a weekly schedule. A new job seeker landing page was developed and jobseeker s were restructured. An automatic feed of Lake Superior sub-region jobs to NORTHFORCE was established. National and Regional Exposure UMW HERC was marketed through regional initiatives and the $319,700 National HERC online, print, and conference advertising and attendance campaigns listed below. Much of the advertising extended across mediums. For example, an ad ran in a conference booklet and on the association s website. The amounts of the campaigns, as directed at particular audiences, were as follows: $10,500 veterans, $12,000 professionals with disabilities, $35,000 general, $44,100 women and minorities, and $218,100 disciplinary and higher education. A portion of the advertising was in kind. HERC was mentioned in online and newsletter articles from the Hechinger Report, INSIGHT into Diversity, and the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity. A HERC brochure was used as a set feature on the television program, Big Bang Theory. HERC both advertised and maintained a presence on FaceBook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Some UMW institutions regularly Tweeted to UMW HERC s homepage. UMW HERC participated in the University of Minnesota Alumni Association Twitter Career Chat, Navigating a New City. HERC jobs were automatically cross posted to DirectJobs, Glassdoor, Jobjanji, Juju, and USMilitaryPipeline. Jobs posted by UMW HERC institutions in the Twin Cities sub-region were included in the Make It. MSP. job bank. HERC was selected by Google to participate in the pilot and launch of Google s new job search experience. UMW HERC contacted the Rochester Area Higher Education Providers Council and the Greater Rochester Advocates for Universities and Colleges regarding its support of Rochester, MN, area institutions. 5 Partnerships and Services UMW HERC capitalized on its partnership with the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) to contact participants in the Doctoral Scholars Program at the start of the fall recruiting season. Information about UMW HERC opportunities was sent to nearly 3,000 minority scholars in the program s data base. SREB s Doctoral Scholars Program also agreed to be a sponsor of the Fall 2017 UMW-Greater Missouri HERC Virtual Career Fair. UMW HERC and Michigan HERC partnered to advertise at the 2017 National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education conference. HERC information was mailed to 76 regional organizations that support the recruitment of women and minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans in support of HERC s qualification as a compliance tool for OFCCP purposes. National HERC, through UMW s leadership, established a partnership with the Black Doctoral Network (BDN). In July 2017, UMW HERC will become a member of BDN and gain access to member contact information. National HERC established partnerships with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and the Graduate Career Consortium. National HERC worked with the U.S. Department of Labor s office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) to create the HERC Disability Inclusion Toolkit. Renee Hogoboom of MN State was a member of the team that developed the toolkit. A veterans recruiting resource summary for search committees was added to the recruiting toolkit. National HERC added new organizations and companies to its non-profit and corporate partnership programs. Bemidji State University, Carleton College, St. Olaf College, and the University of St. Thomas utilized OneClick to facilitate the cross posting of positions from HERC to other sites. Professional Development UMW HERC conducted a joint fall meeting with the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) Midwest Chapter. Assessing and Advancing Campus Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was held November 18, 2016, at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Dr. Katrina Wade-Golden from the University of Michigan gave the keynote address and led an afternoon workshop. Approximately 73 people from 31 institutions attended. UMW HERC sponsored a webinar, The Seven Required Elements for Faculty Diversity Recruiting Success, on June 8, Dr. Christopher D. Lee of the Virginia Community College System led the webinar. About 30 people from 19 institutions participated. Around 30 people from UMW HERC institutions took part in the national webinar series. 5 UMW HERC ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2016-JUNE 30, 2017

6 Fiscal Responsibility HERC carried forward funds from The carry forward was applied to the budget to maintain member dues at their current rates and to support future programming initiatives. HERC ended with a small budget surplus. This surplus will be applied to the budget, again allowing dues to remain static. Administration and Service Madeline Holzem, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, joined the board in July Susan Sexton, St. Catherine University, served a partial year and then stepped down when she retired. Lynn Willmert, Hamline University, and Bruce King, St. Olaf College, will join the board in July UMW Advisory Board members and institutional representatives served in national roles. Anita Rios, MN State, represented UMW on the National Advisory Board, chaired the National Partnership Committee, and served on the National Executive Committee. Kristy Sybilrud, Carleton College, was a member of the National Technology Committee. Mary Everley, UMW HERC/University of Minnesota, chaired the National Membership Committee and served on the National Executive Committee and the Dual-Career Task Force. Mary Everley, UMW HERC/University of Minnesota, was a part of a presentation on international dualcareer services for the College and University Work-Life-Family Association 2017 Annual Conference. Looking Ahead UMW HERC will begin by connecting with faculty and staff candidates through a virtual career fair, co-presented with the Greater Missouri HERC and sponsored by the National Association of Graduate- Professional Students and the Southern Regional Education Board s Doctoral Scholars Program. The Medical College of Wisconsin is slated to join the consortium, extending HERC s influence across central and eastern WI. UMW HERC will continue its sub-region advertising and community awareness efforts and have a presence at additional career fairs targeted at minority candidates. Webinars pertaining to search committee best practices and HERC utilization will be offered throughout the year. Ensuring website responsiveness and obtaining job seeker feedback will be at the top of National HERC s agenda. Dual-career resources will receive greater attention and members will be surveyed to determine their needs and priorities. HERC will pursue regional formation in the South and the Southwest. In brief, in , UMW HERC will: Partner with other regional HERCs and National HERC to expand marketing initiatives and to develop additional relationships with general and minority faculty and staff pipeline and retention programs. 7 Pursue partnerships with affiliated regional and national higher education organizations to increase brand recognition and provide resources for members and jobseekers. Use innovative social media to increase the visibility of institutional and regional diversity on the web site and to create greater awareness of diversity across UMW HERC campuses and in the Upper Midwest region. Generate interaction opportunities for nonmember institutions to encourage HERC participation. Create tools for better discerning and communicating HERC benefits to various campus stakeholders and audiences. Expose members to HERC measurement methods to support their efforts to track HERC utilization and efficacy.
