COLUMBIA GAMEDAY In recognition of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, join the City of Columbia for Let s Move! Columbia GameDay on Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the green space next to Drew Wellness Center. Let s Move! Columbia GameDay is a free event filled with fun activities for the entire family. GameDay will feature a celebrity flag football game with former players from USC, Clemson University, VA Tech and Allen University. There also will be relay races, field games such as hopscotch, dodgeball, musical chairs and jump ropes, a scavenger hunt, live entertainment, exhibitors, healthy snacks and more! 3 CITY OF COLUMBIA ART CENTER OFFERING NEW ART WORKSHOPS The City of Columbia Art Center is offering several new art workshops during the fall. Steam Punk Jewelry offers participants an opportunity to work with metal findings and gears to make wearable art in this new trending art fashion in jewelry. The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Art Center, 1928 Calhoun Street. The registration fee is $60, which includes all materials. Registrations must be received by Saturday, September 6. Participants should bring their own lunch. Learn how to make an egg basket during the Basket Weaving Workshop held Saturday, September 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Edisto Discovery Park, 1914 Wiley Drive. The registration fee is $65, and includes all supplies and tools to make the basket. The workshop is led by instructor Bonnie Geiger. The workshop is limited to a minimum of five students and maximum of 10. If the minimum is not reached by the registration deadline, September 13, the workshop will be cancelled. No cancellations after September 13. All participants must register by the deadline. Make checks and money orders payable to Bonnie Geiger. 4 TUNNEL TO TOWERS 5K RUN/WALK This year s Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower South Carolina 5k Run/Walk is on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 7 p.m. It will begin and end at the South Carolina Midlands First Responders & Military Service Members Historic Remembrance Memorial located next the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Lincoln Street Downtown. A percentage of proceeds from the South Carolina Tunnel to Towers run will go towards building smart homes for catastrophically injured military veterans throughout the United States. The rest of the proceeds will stay in South Carolina in a scholarship fund that will benefit our Military Service Personnel and First Responders in South Carolina. For more information and to register visit: SC GREEN IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS CONFERENCE Leading recycling industry players will participate in a dynamic keynote panel to explore how recycling is making treasure out of trash in the Palmetto State on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the South Carolina Green is Good for Business Conference. The conference will be held at Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln Street. This year s conference will provide attendees with hands-on sustainability skills and also delve deeper into why and how to make sustainability a core business concept. Business and sustainability experts will conduct a wide range of sessions. Conference registration is $75 with a discount for organizations sending three or more people. 5 CENTER OF THE WEEK: COLUMBIA TENNIS CENTER The Columbia Tennis Center offers various programs to meet the needs of the community including recreational play, tournaments, day camps, and USTA Men s and Women s leagues. Located in the Wheeler Hill neighborhood near USC, the Columbia Tennis Center features a pro shop for those seeking individual and group lessons. Lessons are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced players. The center has 14 lighted tennis courts nine hard courts and five clay courts and is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tennis is a great way to increase your speed, build leg strength and balance, burn calories and have fun with family and friends. 10 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST TABLETOP ART HISTORY: STILL LIFE FROM THE COLLECTION This intimate and colorful exhibition uses still life painting to tell the story of American art. From polished photographic apples, to loosely, but lovingly, painted bowls on the kitchen table, Tabletop Art History offers the opportunity to see how artists can use one theme in many different styles. Along the way, we also learn the difference between "realism," "impressionism," and "expressionism." Twenty-four of the CMA's greatest still life paintings are displayed.
