1 Belmont Village of Buffalo Grove 500 McHenry Road Buffalo Grove, IL Phone Fax February 2015 Our Team: Maureen Chippas Executive Director (847) x102 Maria Paquit Dir. of Resident Care Services (847) x109 Felix Lopez Building Engineer (847) x105 Florencio DeLaRosa Chef Manager (847) x106 Lori Walocha Activity Program Coordinator (847) x104 Christine Blanchard Memory Program Coordinator (847) x112 Rosemary Steinberg Human Resources Coordinator (847) x103 Debra Lapin Susan Kocanda Community Relations (847) x108 (847) x107 Dear Friends, We associate February with acknowledgements of love, and none more precious than the love of family. I am featuring a mother and son dynamic duo: the Faust Family, aka The Faust Family Singers. Gina Faust was born in San Pedro, California. She attended and graduated from Humber College in Ontario, Canada, with a certification in Group Exercise Leadership. She has a national certification through the AFFA and ACE in fitness and group training. She has been married to John for 34 years. Gina has a daughter, who married this past summer, and a son, Jim, pictured here with her. Gina has worked as a rehab tech, but works as an Activity Assistant in the Neighborhood and Circle of Friends, as well as a concierge here at Belmont Village. Gina plays piano and loves to dance. She loves our seniors and appreciates being part of their lives. Gina recognizes that it can be a scary step when moving to a new home, Belmont Village. She is happy to be part of their journey as they meet new friends and try new activities. Jim, who was our employee of the month for January, is 24 years old. If you have not actually met him, you may have heard him singing with our residents in the hallways on their way to meals or activities. When Jim was a baby, he would hum the jingles that would come on commercials. He has sung in choirs and performed in musicals. He is on the board of directors of Up and Coming Theatre. Last fall he directed Jesus Christ Superstar a huge commitment but a labor of love. Jim s favorite musicals include Next to Norma, Les Miserables, and Miss Saigon. Previously Jim had worked at another senior community as a server. He developed a philosophy when caring for seniors: always demonstrate patience, humility and kindness. Jim is tall so when engaging our residents in conversation, he can be seen kneeling and making eye contact so our residents are comfortable. (Front cover story is continued on page 6.)

These include a lunch bunch outing on Mondays and a scenic drive opportunity on Saturday mornings. Neighborhood News The Neighborhood recently held its annual holiday party, during which we offered a lunch buffet meal and holiday entertainment. 3 Heart Attack Warning Signs Some heart attacks are sudden and intense the movie heart attacks, where no one doubts what s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren t sure what s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening. CHEST DISCOMFORT Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. DISCOMFORT IN OTHER AREAS OF THE UPPER BODY - Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. SHORTNESS OF BREATH - with or without chest discomfort. OTHER SIGNS - May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. As with men, women s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/ vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you re not sure it s a heart attack, have it checked out. Minutes matter. At BELMONT VILLAGE, call the nurse immediately at any time. Fast action saves lives maybe your own. Two New Readers! Every month several residents read to kindergartners at Willow Grove School. It is a win-win situation! The children are adorable, well-behaved, and attentive to grandparent readers. Isabelle did a great job! Natalie engaged her students! Elvis Was in the House! Babe & Jane were serenaded by Elvis! 7 Happy and Healthy 2014! There was a full house for our New Year s Eve Party! We enjoyed delicious appetizers, champagne, and even a symbolic piece of chocolate to ring in a sweet year! After we learned about some New Year history, answered some New Year trivia, and shared some fun resolution poems and quotes, the gold Belmont Ball began to drop: "10, 9, 8... Happy New Year! Our group made lots of noise with their noisemakers. We then wished everyone a healthy New Year. We were fortunate to have Alex Talbott entertain us and end the festivities. The gold ball drops as the countdown begins! Margie and Joan blew their horns! Shirley was ALL smiles as she rang in the new year! These ladies had FUN! Fay, Elaine and Estelle sipped on champagne and made some noise! Chuck and Esther made a toast! Camelia s daughter, Marietta (above), and Lilly s daughter, Marilyn (below), joined us for the festivities! Beverly enjoyed the music! Nina helped to ring in the new year! These ladies did well with the trivia questions and were ready for some FUN! Walt and Ruth B. had FUN with their noisemakers! Elaine dressed up in her colorful, sparkly top for the party!
