As we age, is it safe to say that most of us become creatures of habit and like things just the way they are? Often even the slightest change increases our anxiety and sends us into a tizzy! On most mornings, Starbucks is a stop for a cup of black coffee...and I m not a happy camper if something gets in the way of that! Are we in charge of our routines or do our routines control us? I submit to you that for the sake of our mental and emotional well-being, it s important to understand and embrace change! In my experience, when we get stuck in a rut and have trouble accepting change, it sends us toward depression. Did you read about the sign posted on a horrifically muddy road? It read, Choose your tracks carefully, you ll be stuck in them for a long time! That may be true on a long muddy road but it doesn t have to be the reality with our attitudes! Almost without exception, changes I ve grumbled about have wound up being better than I anticipated. On the flip side, there s nothing wrong with questioning why things are the way they are! A young girl was watching her mom in the kitchen, as she was preparing a ham for dinner. Her mother carefully cut off both ends of the ham before placing it in the pan. The little one asked her mom, why? Mom said both ends were severed because her mother always did it that way. At that point, the young girl asked her grandmother why she cut both ends of the ham, to which grandmother replied, So it would fit in my small pan! Little ones question, challenge and adapt to change better than we do...we can learn from them. When I was a little boy, my older brother Bob built a go-cart. It was a flat wooden platform on wheels, with a lawn mower engine on the rear. Everything about it was perfect, with one major exception: the steering was reversed. When you turned the steering wheel to the right, the go-cart went left and vice versa. Can you imagine turning a steering wheel right and a car going left? Dad didn t change it; he let it stay the way it was made, so that his boys would adapt to unexpected changes. It was a good lesson and guess what? My brother and I adapted and cruised around the neighborhood with great joy. You ve heard the expression that the only constant in life is change? As we accept and embrace change, it will be okay and can be good for our health!

3 Belmont Village Scores Big During Super Bowl 49 Arizona may have had the pleasure to host Super Bowl 49 but Belmont Village of Scottsdale is proud to host three amazing stories from the event. The first is from Seth Amolo (Neighborhood PAL). When Arizona hosted the Super Bowl in 2008 Seth was on his way out of the country the day of the game and was upset to miss such an amazing event. When it game time for AZ to host it again he jumped at the opportunity and splurged on a ticket in November. Because the teams were not yet picked Seth paid a decent price for such a life experience. After paying $100 to park and then walking what seemed like miles, he had a life-changing decision to make. On his way into the game, at the gate, a man from New York offered him $5,000 for his ticket. Seth had to choose; most of us say he chose wisely, and went into the stadium for a priceless once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once inside he huffed it up to the top of the stadium, nearly touching the ceiling. He may have had a bird s-eye view, but with his high-tech cell phone and 12"-long zoom lens, he was practically on the sidelines. He captured amazing shots of the first touchdowns for each team, and gorgeous pictures of the halftime show and fireworks. Seth is still reeling from such an experience and is starting to budget for Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco. Seth A. at Super Bowl 49 Short and Sweet JoAnna K. s son, Michael, received his opportunity to go to the Super Bowl from his employer with a ticket valued over $1,800. He had a great time and loves to reminisce about the big day. Mike and his dad, Richard Another Big Win The second story is of Andrew Wantuck, who is the husband of Julia Fenderson s granddaughter. Andrew produced a Doritos Crash the Super Bowl commercial with Scott Zabielski, the director of Tosh.0. Over 5,000 people submitted 30-second commercials & his was selected to be a finalist (top 10). The one they produced is called Middle Seat. They didn t know THEY WON until they actually saw their commercial air live during the game. This brought Andrew extra happiness this NFL season because his precious Buffalo Bills haven t made the playoffs since the Clinton administration. The winning prize was $1,000,000 which Andrew and his team will share. Andrew plans to set all his winnings aside for his children s education. Andrew & his wife, Brittany, have a 22-month-old, Charlotte Joy, & are expecting a second child in July. Julia, Andrew & Charlotte Joy

7 News from Ashley Marcellus, MPC The Circle of Friends is ready for spring. The residents look forward to the bees buzzing and butterflies metamorphosing. Last month the residents loved observing these things at the Butterfly Wonderland Atrium. The highlight of the trip was when the beautiful butterflies would come and land on us. It was so wonderful to be a part of the butterflies world. We were also intrigued to see the bees in their beehive and how they produce honey. bed, fill the bird feeders, and hang some new wind chimes. The Neighborhood residents would like to share the poem they wrote about Spring time!
