Most alumni from any college or university are firmly on the fence when it comes to their feelings about change and sameness at their alma maters. They like to come back to campus and see places and people they remember, and at the same time, they appreciate and expect progress. As SVSU approaches its 50th anniversary, our alumni can enjoy a little of both. If you visit campus you will find George Eastland still teaching chemistry and Hong Park teaching economics, to name a few. You will also discover hundreds of other faculty members who are delivering the 70-plus academic programs that we now offer at SVSU. A tour of campus will most likely require a map. Wickes Hall and the Zoo are still here, but there are many new and improved places that make your alma mater a destination campus for over 10,500 students, including more than 2,700 residential students. We have the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum and the Ryder Center and it s bigger than it was in 1989! Curtiss Hall is home to the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts and the Rhea Miller Recital Hall which host plays, symposiums and concerts for our campus community and surrounding communities. Today s SVSU students are mostly from Michigan, representing nearly every county. And several of them are the first in their family to attend college. They like it here because SVSU is a place where students can get involved in student organizations, athletics, study abroad opportunities, fundraising, politics, and so much more. SVSU students have the opportunity to extend their education outside the classroom and become informed and active citizens, long before they graduate. And this has continued as one of the hallmarks of this welcoming institution since There s no question that SVSU has evolved over the years. It must evolve in order to be relevant to today s students. This evolution has been successful because the fundamental character of our alma mater has remained largely unchanged. The basic values that attracted many of us to SVSU still appeal to today s students. After nearly 50 years, SVSU is more fully realizing the power of connecting with its graduates through guest lectures, internships, mentorships and private support. Our 37,000plus alumni are coming back, getting involved and helping pave the way for current SVSU students. There s something very powerful when experienced alumni interact with ambitious students. Our alumni can provide advice, insight and resources to help these future alumni make the most of their SVSU experience and begin their careers. Our 50th anniversary is great time to celebrate our progress, both institutionally and individually. It s also a time for alumni to look forward to what we can help the university accomplish over the next 50 years. This program was designed to encourage alumni support of our Admissions Office efforts to recruit prospective students to SVSU. Athletics and whose character brings distinction and excellence to Saginaw Valley State University.

4 Hall of Fame 2012 The SVSU Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame honored four of our own by inducting the third class on September 14. The mission of the SVSU Athletic Hall of Fame is to commemorate and honor student-athletes, coaches, staff and teams whose accomplishments have contributed to the esteemed traditions of Cardinal Athletics and whose character brings distinction and excellence to Saginaw Valley State University. Dave Bertie designed the current Saginaw Valley athletic training room as well as policies and procedures that are still in place today. From 1980 to 1995, Bertie served as SVSU s (then Saginaw Valley State College) third head athletic and established the Athletic Training Internship program at SVSU. During his time at SVSU, Bertie and his staff of dedicated student athletic trainers were responsible for the health care of all 12 athletic teams. During his tenture at SVSU, Bertie developed working relationships with current team physician Dr. Michael Wolohan and many area physicians and health care providers, which continues to be an asset to SVSU Athletics today. Bertie is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education at Saginaw Valley and has been a physical education teacher in the Bay City School District since Kathy Kinasz was a member of the Saginaw Valley State softball team during the seasons. Kinasz was one of the most dominant pitchers Cardinal Softball has ever seen as she still holds 12 different records at SVSU. Career pitching records include: appearances (135), starts (119), victories (88), innings pitched (793.) and complete games (88). Kinasz is also at the top of many single-season records. She was selected as a First Team NCAA All-American in 1992 after leading the nation in strikeouts (265) and victories (42). After 20 seasons she still ranks in the top-10 in several NCAA single season marks: games (55), innings pitched (347.7), games started (53) and victories (42). Jason Valenzuela was a member of the SVSU baseball team from 2000 to Valenzuela earned All-American honors in 2000 as he recorded a.448 batting average and 86 hits, both Saginaw Valley school records. Valenzuela is also the Cardinal career leader in batting average (.410), while ranking sixth in stolen bases (50). In his two seasons at SVSU, Jason led the Cardinals to back-to-back GLIAC championships including a school-record 40 wins in 2000 and a regional championship game appearance, in route to being selected Regional Player of the Year. In 2001, the SVSU Baseball squad compiled a record, including a 22-5 GLIAC record and another regional championship game appearance. Steve Zott was a member of the Saginaw Valley State football team from Zott had much success playing the quarterback position for the Cardinals. Zott excelled in his senior season earning NAIA All- American Honorable Mention honors as well as the team MVP award in both 1978 and He also was selected First Team All-GLIAC in 1979 and was a two-time recipient of the Golden Helmet Award, given to the football player with the highest grade point average. Zott led the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance in school history in Zott is the fourth all-time at SVSU in pass attempts (669), completions (336), yards (4,459), touchdowns (35) and total offense (4,716). 4
