2 FRIENDS UNIVERSITY Mission Statement Friends University, a Christian University of Quaker heritage, equips students to honor God and serve others by integrating their intellectual, spiritual and professional lives. College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education offers students a traditional college experience with liberal arts and professional programs that represent a broad range of academic majors. The Fine Arts Division exists for the creation and study of the arts. We provide students educational and creative experiences that integrate professional artistic standards with the academic inquiry of the liberal arts, Christian tradition and our Quaker heritage. Students and faculty develop their craft and vocation while engaging audiences and serving the community. Dedicated faculty guide instruction in a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum, mentoring students to experience the transforming power of the arts and to excel in their profession. Friends University Fine Arts Department has become my second family, and they have helped in ways that I will never forget. Natassia Howell The best part of my day is arriving at Friends University and being part of what I love - music. Conner Siler 2

3 Excellence in the Fine Arts The Division of Fine Arts fosters a long tradition of excellence. We have had performing arts on our campus since 1900 and visual arts since This heritage informs our 21st century model of providing outstanding educational and creative experiences through dedicated faculty/mentors, more than 20 guest musicians, choreographers and artists, and 150 concerts, performances, exhibits and events annually. A commitment to creating out-of-the-classroom learning experiences and inviting guest artists to campus exposes our students and faculty to relevant, artistic creativity and innovation. It also serves as a valuable source of inspiration and a model for successful careers in the arts. Fine Arts Quick Facts One-third of undergraduate students participate in the performing and visual arts at Friends, resulting in a vibrant, creative culture. Faculty actively create and perform in and around Wichita. Recent performances include international touring and professional conferences: Costa Rica, Cuba, Jazz Education Network Conferences, American Choral Directors Association Conferences, and Kansas Music Educators Association Conferences. Partnerships with area graphics, marketing and performing arts organizations for internships and out-of-the-classroom learning opportunities for students. Student artists regularly exhibit in Wichita galleries. Jazz combos perform in Wichita venues. Student musicians and actors perform in Wichita churches, schools and concerts. When I think about how much I have grown as a musician since I came to Friends University, I am astounded. The music professors here really are the best, and they challenge you to be the best that you can be. Jedidiah Wisner 3

7 ballet The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet degree is designed to foster excellence in preparation for a professional career in the world of ballet with opportunities for additional studies in teaching, administration and therapy. Each ballet degree plan can be uniquely designed for individual students depending on interest, ability and goals. A dance minor is offered for students seeking a major in another discipline. Our goal is to offer a ballet education that creates talented performing artists so they may achieve their future goals and become confident leaders in their profession. Final projects are designed to propel students into creative, successful careers. A nurturing and supportive environment, combined with professional ballet training, enables dancers to reach their full potential physically as their passion for arts education increases. Friends University s ballet department involves a number of guest artists, teachers and choreographers each year. The choral and vocal faculty regularly offer out-of-the-classroom learning experiences through national and international touring, opera study experiences in Germany and performing at professional music education conferences throughout the Midwest and Southeast. Ensembles have performed across the United States and Canada, as well as Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Costa Rica. 10 JAZZ The jazz department is unique in the opportunities it provides for playing and studying jazz in a small university setting. Students participate in a variety of jazz ensembles, including two big bands, a jazz vocal ensemble, several jazz combos, jazz improvisation class and applied lessons for all jazz instruments. 11 Theatre Theatre productions offer a variety of opportunities to perform, collaborate, create and produce stage plays, musical theatre, improvisation and original scripts. At Friends this means that you can participate in performance or production leading to a Theatre minor which partners well with a number of majors and academic paths. Students come to learn creative ways to solve their educational, vocational and artistic problems using critical thinking skills based upon solid work experience in theatrical performance and production. This sets the stage for success in many areas of endeavor. Theatre at Friends means ensemble: working intimately with others toward creative ends. Theatre at Friends also means working independently: setting goals, becoming motivated and meeting deadlines. Theatre at Friends means good play joins good work in a fun and creative community. A variety of annual productions and projects provide ample opportunity for students to perform, create and learn. You Can t Take it with You By George S.
