Each February 1st we celebrate our founder Lucy Wheelock s birthday and recognize her leadership and pioneering work in the field of early childhood education. On hundred fifty-two years after her birth, Lucy Wheelock s lifework continues to be an inspiration for us all. ~President Jackie Jenkins- Scott Wheelock News The Alumni Association Endowment Fund Committee Offers Grants from the Marjorie Wolf Memorial Grants Fund Do you have an idea for a project that would benefit children and/or families? If so, the Endowment Fund Grants Committee of the Wheelock College Alumni Association may be able to help you. Each year the Alumni Association Endowment Fund Committee awards grant funding to a Wheelock graduate to assist in the development or completion of a clearly defined idea or project. This year two separate grants will be awarded, each in the amount of $750. Read more and download an application here!

2 Wheelock Announces 2009 Winter Policy Talks We are pleased to announce the 2009 Winter Policy Talks. The theme this year is Global Communities: Contributions, challenges and expectations: Working with immigrant children and families. Lectures will be held in the Ladd Room, 43 Hawes Street, Brookline Campus, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. We will have several presenters for each talk, including Wheelock faculty, legislators, practitioners, and community members. Our amazing Alumni Relations Office Student Assistant Amanda Cawley 10 is studying abroad this semester in Dublin, Ireland, at the Dublin City University. Amanda, a junior from Franklin, MA, is a Humanities major with a focus in Literature, and is taking courses in humanities and social sciences while in Dublin. You may have met Amanda at Reunion Weekend, which she attended as a student assistant; chatted with her on the phone as she worked the Annual Fund Phone-a-thon; or attended a Board meeting with her as she currently serves as a student representative on the Alumni Association Board. Before she left earlier this month, Amanda traveled with Wheelock on her 4 th service learning trip to New Orleans. 3 Ubuntu in the Works: Youth Transforming Violence Art Gallery Exhibit On Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00-4:00 p.m., the West Falmouth Public Library will host a few pieces from last year s Juvenile Justice and Youth Advocacy Program s art gallery exhibit. The exhibit featured the work of youth artists in the theme of ubuntu (a South African philosophy that speaks of human interconnectedness and interdependence) and of youth working to transform violence. The Ubuntu Photo Mosaic and Ubuntu Globe Sculpture will be on display for the afternoon, with a reception beginning at 2:00 p.m. that will include an introduction and speeches by the youth artists who participated in the project, and members of SPARK the Truth, who would like to show their appreciation to the Falmouth community for their warmth, generosity, and support throughout last year. Light refreshments will be served. International Alumni Spotlight: Ms. Geraldine Zuzarte 04 MS Working in the field of education for over two decades, Geraldine Zuzarte 04MS, is a shining example of the Wheelock College spirit and mission to improve the lives of children and families. Geraldine graduated from the Wheelock College Master of Science in Early Childhood Education program offered in partnership with RTRC Asia in Singapore in 2004 and has since remained closely connected to Wheelock and our collaborative work with both RTRC Asia and Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore. Geraldine s devotion to working in the early childhood field is evident through her work as the Centre Director of The Caterpillar s Cove Child Development and Study Centre at Ngee Ann Polytechnic as well as her ongoing teaching to further the progress of education globally.

As an Assistant Director at RTRC Asia, Geraldine oversees the professional matters in the full-time Diploma in Early Childhood Education program offered in partnership with Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

4 As an Assistant Director at RTRC Asia, Geraldine oversees the professional matters in the full-time Diploma in Early Childhood Education program offered in partnership with Ngee Ann Polytechnic. As a full-time faculty member of RTRC Asia, she teaches and mentors current and future educators enrolled in the Diploma in and Bachelor of Science programs offered by Wheelock College in Singapore in partnership with both RTRC Asia and Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She serves as an exceptional role model to the learners in the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Educational Studies and Leadership program at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and it is clear that she is highly regarded by them. She accompanied the first cohort of learners to Boston during the five-week Summer Immersion Program that took place in 2008 and, more recently, took on the role of faculty adviser to the new Bachelor of Science Student Group at the learners request. Geraldine co-taught THE 351 Learning and Teaching Through the Arts with Susan Kosoff 65/ 75MS and while in Boston, she co-taught EDU 322 Parent Teacher Communication. She is currently co-teaching HDP 362 The Meaning and Development of Play with Dr. Kathleen Reed in Singapore. Geraldine s continued involvement in the Wheelock College programs in Singapore is evidence of the strength of Wheelock s partnerships as well as our shared commitment to improving the lives of children and families on a global scale. Each session will meet for three hours on Saturday afternoons beginning February 21, All sessions will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Activities West Rm. 205, Boston Campus. The full series is strongly recommended for Elementary and Moderate Disability candidates who seek test preparation and support. Educators will explore and share ways of using documentation, inspired by Reggio Emilia educators, as a tool for understanding learning in a variety of contexts.
