MOSS BOOK CLUB - Dr. Kimberly Murray, Assistant Professor of Sociology, leads a John F. Moss Library Book Club conversation on Tuesday about Between the World and Me, a 2015 New York Times bestseller by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Participants discussed the author s understanding of race in America, both past and present, the criminal justice system and race, the educational system and race, and the ways in which he describes parenting styles by race. The next John F. Moss Libary Book Club event is Feb. 28 from 12:15-1:30 p.m. and will feature Dr. Rebecca Martindale, who will be discussing Searching for Whitopia by Richard Benjamin. A light lunch will be served. Download a copy of Searching for Whitopia On March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., Richard Benjamin will be discussing his book Searching for Whitopia: An Improbable Journey to the Heart of White America as part of the Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) lecture series. Richard Benjamin is a political scientist, journalist and cultural analyst who appears regularly in public debates featured on NPR, MSNBC and C-SPAN and in The New York Times. PLACE has ordered 50 copies of Searching for Whitopia in an ebook format. Faculty, staff and students can redeem the ebook by clicking the link below and then pushing the SUBMIT button. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to come and read poetry or prose, fiction or nonfiction works written by African American authors. Please keep readings to no longer than 10 minutes, and participants may read multiple times if time and space allows. Poetry, speeches, essays, dramatic works, excerpts from short stories or novels, song lyrics all genres welcome! Readers will get a certificate of participation. In honor of W.E.B.
