We are hurt, often by those who may not be aware they have hurt us. Occasionally we are hurt by those who are aware of the damage they do to persons and reputations, but continue to inflict pain on others through lies, gossip, slander, betrayal, exclusion, unkind words and actions and failure to respond to needs, and, at times plain meanness causes hurt. Bring your need for forgiveness as well as your need to be free of the hurts in your life. Remember that the person who gains the most from forgiveness is the one who does the forgiving. 20 Shrines & Sacred Spaces Shrines & Sacred Spaces SistersofProvidence.org 20 Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, foundress of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, walked these grounds from 1840 to 1856, having arrived from France with five sister companions. Mother Theodore s trust in Providence, zeal for the mission, love and kindness forged a lasting legacy which lives on today. Declared a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in 2006, Mother Theodore is the first Indiana saint and the eighth in the United States. Her shrine is open daily for prayer and reflection. In the shrine, you will experience her journey, learn how her legacy lives on today and be challenged to bear witness to the blessings of Providence in your own life. Hours: 7 a.m.- 5 p.m. Enter through Providence Spirituality & Conference Center. National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence Our Lady of Providence is a title for Mary, the mother of Jesus. Like so many families do, Mary and Joseph experienced the joys and the struggles of family life. In May 1925, the Sisters of Providence established the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence with the purpose of encouraging families to make Mary the queen of their homes. For more than 90 years, Sisters of Providence and others have gathered at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence to pray for the many intentions sent to the shrine, which is located in the vestibule of the. Special prayers are offered for the needs of all families, asking for the protection and intercession of Our Lady of Providence as Queen of the Home. Those who worship in the Church of the Immaculate Conception have their senses awakened. The organ music, paintings, bas-reliefs, stained glass windows, murals and marble works provide an atmosphere for worship. But only when the church is filled with people does the mystery of the Blessed Sacrament truly come alive. You are always welcome to worship with the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to experience this truly holy site. The sisters invite you to make it part of your travel plans to worship in this magnificent church sometime this year. 21 Blessed Sacrament Chapel This exquisite chapel invites spiritual seekers to spend time in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Built in the style of the Italian Renaissance, the chapel has a canopy over the altar that was carved entirely from one block of flawless white Italian Carrara marble from base to cross and weighs 8,000 pounds. Visitors are certain to find inner peace and healing in this small chapel. Hours: Mon.-Sat. 7-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Sunday 7-10 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Enter through Providence Spirituality & Conference Center. Labyrinth The labyrinth, an ancient spiritual tool meant to quiet the mind and open the soul, is located in Sacred Heart Grove, an area just south of Owens Hall. This apparent maze is, in reality, a single path with one opening serving as both beginning and end. Bricks set into the soil outline the design and guide the journey within. Stations of the Cross The traditional Roman Catholic Stations of the Cross (14) can be found along Sacred Heart Grove pathway, south of Owens Hall. The bronze figures were fashioned in Italy and imported to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in 1938 and are displayed on Indiana limestone bases. These beautifully crafted scenes of Christ s sufferings and death lend themselves to prayer and meditation. Saint Anne Shell Chapel Just outside the gates of the Sisters of Providence cemetery stands Saint Anne Shell Chapel, built in This small stone structure replaced the original log chapel built by Mother Theodore in thanksgiving to Saint Anne for safety during their harrowing journey back from France. The story of trust in Providence is captured on some of the shells that line the walls of the chapel. Open 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. in the shadow of today s Church of the Immaculate Conception. Space is available inside and outside for sitting, quiet time, personal reflection and prayer. Open daily. Cosmic Walk White Violet Center for Eco-Justice offers an outdoor Cosmic Walk, which is open to the public and located on the north side of the grounds, near Saint Joseph Lake on the Nature Trail. The Cosmic Walk will awaken a deeper consciousness of the amazing beauty and age of the Universe and its unfolding life process. It will evoke a sense of mystery, awe and reverence in the person who participates in this ritual.
