Honoring Our Mission and Legacy Saint Mary s High School is a Roman Catholic, college preparatory school, serving a diverse student body of young men and women. St. Mary s High School is committed through its teachings to foster respect within its community by celebrating the uniqueness of each person. St. Mary s provides a nurturing environment in which students are encouraged to develop their spiritual, academic, emotional, social, and physical potentials. Staffed by a dedicated faculty and supported by parents, alumni and friends, St. Mary s aspires to continue its tradition of academic excellence, service, and citizenship. Joyful, loving service Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Legacy Founded in 1949, Saint Mary s High School was first staffed by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Diocesan priests. The first classes were held in the parish elementary school. The following year, 150 boys and girls continued their studies in the new high school building erected on the campus; later that year the Marist Brothers arrived. We honor our founding principals, Mother M. Annette and Brother Nicholas Mary, who set the foundation of the Saint Mary s High School education that has guided and served the school for over 60 years. Through the vision of Monsignor John K. Sharp, pastor ( ) the school facilities expanded as the enrollment increased. A new building was erected and opened its doors in 1959 and was designated as the boys school. During Monsignor John J. Wiest s years as pastor ( ), extensive renovations took place in both buildings, culminating in the acquisition of property and the construction of a track and athletic field. Under the leadership of Monsignor John J. Skelly, pastor ( ) St. Mary s renewed its commitment as a coeducational institution and maximized the use of the entire high school complex. The two buildings were appropriately renamed Immaculata and Marist Halls. Since 1998, St. Mary s continues its mission under the pastoral guidance of Monsignor John J. McCann who uniquely holds the position as pastor and member of the Class of Monsignor s steadfast commitment to Catholic education has enabled the growth of a state-of-the-art infrastructure bringing St. Mary s to the forefront of technology in Catholic high schools. The High School facilities provide students with the use of 42 classrooms, biology, chemistry and physics laboratories, four technology centers featuring one dedicated MAC center, a library, two cafeterias, two gymnasiums each with locker room facilities, a universal gym, a soccer/lacrosse athletic field and an all-weather track, two art studios, and an auditorium. The Church of Saint Mary is the heart of the campus, where school liturgies and prayer services are held throughout the year. To Jesus through Mary Marist Brothers of the Schools

Message from the President and Principal We are delighted to share with you this brochure highlighting the Saint Mary s High School experience. Since 1949, Saint Mary s has offered an educational program that developed the faith, character and scholarly abilities of over 12,000 young men and women. We have been asked by prospective students, How will attending Saint Mary s help prepare me for my future? What is the Saint Mary s experience all about? This brochure will begin to answer these questions and bring further reflections to mind as you embark on your high school search. We are confident that the Saint Mary s experience empowers students to discover their talents and learn more about themselves and what they are capable of accomplishing. The commitment and dedication of our faculty is evident in the impressive range of what our students achieve each day in the classroom and in other areas of school life. We are proud of our students many accomplishments and are grateful for our Pastor and the dedicated community of administrators, faculty, School Board, parents, alumni and friends who teach, coach, support and cheer our students and graduates on to greater achievements. Saint Mary s High School has been defined by the students, parents and alumni as a home away from home where students discover the inspiration and joy they need to grow spiritually and intellectually. Broad in scope and rich in opportunities, a Saint Mary s education prepares our young men and women to succeed in college and beyond. It challenges students to grow in faith and wisdom, to promote the Gospel values by treating all with dignity, interacting with compassion and integrity, pursuing peace and justice, and living a life of service to those in need. These teachings have been imbedded in our mission for over sixty years, and continue to serve our current students and alumni. Our unique location provides easy access from most points of Nassau and Queens County. Our vibrant, all inclusive school community helps shape our students to grow as global citizens and leaders for tomorrow. We welcome students from all faiths and diverse backgrounds and foster a culture where students value academic excellence. There is so much more to share with you regarding Advanced Placement course offerings, the Scholar Service Institute, leadership and stewardship opportunities, and extracurricular offerings. Spirituality St. Mary s High School is committed to the faith development of our students. St. Mary s instills knowledge in our students from the perspective of service and justice in school, in Church, and in the whole of humanity. Each of the four required Religion courses explores the Bible, morality and ethics in modern society. In addition, St. Mary s Campus Ministry offers day and weekend retreats, opportunities for community service, group Bible study, training for Eucharistic Ministry and retreat leadership. The student body is a welcome part of the Church of Saint Mary parish family and participates in liturgies and prayer services throughout the school year. Saint Mary s High School offers parents and their children the right educational choice for a happy and successful high school experience. These years are the building blocks of character. St. Mary s High School starts with a strong foundation that supports the faith and values we have tried to instill in our children at home. Barbara and Dennis McNamara, Parents Academics The program of studies at St. Mary s is designed to provide each student with a comprehensive college preparatory education with an emphasis on core curriculum skills. Students devote the first two or three years of their academic career to required, non-electives. Within the framework of this basic curriculum, St. Mary s recognizes individual differences by providing a range of levels for many courses: Advanced Placement, Honors, and Regents. St. Mary s also offers unique elective courses to allow students who have met pre-requisites to explore specialized subjects. The Saint Mary s curriculum is supplemented by cutting-edge technology including state-of-the-art wireless capacity for every student to access the Internet simultaneously and every classroom is equipped with interactive whiteboards. Saint Mary s uses the latest Apple and Microsoft products for instruction in video editing software as well as all Office system products. An interactive online system allows all students and parents to access homework assignments, grades and teacher comments. With the launch of an integrated ipad2 curriculum for all incoming freshmen, St. Mary s is one of the first schools to implement ipad technology for an entire class level. The program aims to enhance student motivation, higher order learning skills, study skills, and technology across content areas such as history, fine arts and sciences. St. Mary s offers the opportunity for students to participate in college level computer courses such as Introduction to Computer Programming and Advanced Placement Computer Science.

Gospel Values Curriculum 7 The Saint Mary s education is more than just academics. We assist our students in making connections between Catholic social teachings and what they learn in each of their classes. St. Mary s implements its unique Gospel Values curriculum within the academic core curriculum. Through a four-year education at St. Mary s High School, students are called to proclaim and live the following Gospel Values which flow from the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came to reveal and proclaim the Gospel message of human dignity, solidarity, justice and peace. The Gospel Values include: The Sanctity of Life, The Importance of Family and Community, Human Rights and Our Responsibilities, The Preferential Option for the Poor, The Dignity of Work, Solidarity and Care for God s Creation. Below is a summary of the integrated Gospel Values projects across academic disciplines and grade levels. Each discipline includes a practical understanding of how Jesus invites us to live our Christian faith in every aspect of life. In a fine arts class, freshmen study international music as a way to explore the Gospel Value of Tolerance. In a social studies class, juniors use the Civil Rights Movement as a tool to understanding the Gospel Value of Rights and Responsibilities. By learning to see the Gospel and its teachings in real world examples, Jesus message becomes part of students consciousness and integrates their faith and academic development. These Gospel Values are central to every St. Mary s initiative - academic, cocurricular and extracurricular. They make our School an outstanding model of a Christian community. Immersed in this philosophy, a St. Mary s graduate is prepared to assume leadership and service roles through lives that give witness to the Gospel.

Academic Programs The emphasis of the academic program is a strong foundation in core skills while preparing students to not only meet but excel in the New York State standards in education. Within the framework of this curriculum, St. Mary s recognizes individual differences by providing a range of levels for many courses. Every effort is made to design a program for each student in which he or she will be challenged and achieve success. Depending on the subject, the course may have one, two, or three levels; Advanced Placement course (AP) is an accelerated course appropriate to some subjects which prepares students to take an AP Examination. An Honors course (H) is an accelerated course appropriate to some subjects which covers the required curriculum and extra topics in greater depth and detail than in the regular course. Selection for Honors is based on a student s ability, past achievement in the content area and enrollment limitations. A Regular course (R) covers the full state approved curriculum of a subject. For a Regents subject this course will prepare students to take the Regents Examination. Religious studies, English, social studies and physical education are required each year. Students are also required to take three years of mathematics and science although four are strongly recommended, two years of a foreign language although three are recommended and two years of fine arts. Health education and SAT Prep and Technology are also required courses. After fulfilling their required course work, students must choose electives. Sample course schedules follow: Grade 9 Religious Studies English Social Studies Foreign Language Mathematics Science Art or Music SAT Prep and Technology Physical Education Grade 10 Religious Studies English Social Studies Foreign Language Mathematics Science Art or Music Health Physical Education Grade 11 Religious Studies English Social Studies Mathematics Science Physical Education + Required Electives (minimum of one) Grade 12 Religious Studies English Social Studies Physical Education + Required Electives (minimum of two) Electives include: Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, Computer Science, Computer Skills Teaching Practicum, Computer Networking Practicum, National Legal Issues, Civil and Criminal Law, Fine Arts, Journalism, Publications, Psychology (Grade 12), First Aid and CPR. College Credit St. Mary s offers Advanced Placement courses in English, World History, United States History, European History, Calculus, Spanish, Italian, Biology, Environmental Science and Computer Science. In addition, through a cooperative program with St. John s and Adelphi Universities, students can earn college credit for courses in English, Language, American Government, College Algebra, Calculus, Computer Science and Psychology.

Honors First Honors are awarded to students who achieve a 93% average and have no grades below 85%. Second Honors are awarded to students who achieve an 85% average and have no grade below 80%. 9 St. Mary s is a member of the Thomas More Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Membership is a privilege extended to sophomores, juniors and seniors who have and maintain a minimum scholastic average of 92%. The four characteristics of a NHS student are scholarship, service, leadership and character. Academic Year The academic year is comprised of four marking periods. The permanent record mark, which is the students final grade in a subject, is comprised of the grade earned for the four quarters and the final exam grade. At St. Mary s, a passing grade is 70% or higher. Progress Reports and Report Cards All academic reports will be made available to parents or guardians through the School s interactive website. Parent-Teacher Conferences St. Mary s conducts Parent-Teacher conferences subsequent to marking periods 1 and 2. These meetings involve the parent, teacher and student more directly in the formal education and experience. As I leave high school to continue my education, studying pharmacy at St. John s University, I know that St. Mary s will continue the tradition of providing its students with a great education and many opportunities to use the knowledge they gain to serve their communities. Kevin Won 11 Each year, deserving students are inducted into the School s National Honor Society during a special awards ceremony held in the Church of Saint Mary.

Student leaders take advantage of the personal opportunity to mentor younger students on campus at Saint Mary s Elementary School exploring topics such as bullying, self-esteem and being positive role models.

Scholar Service Institute 11 The Saint Mary s Scholar Service Institute (SSI) is a demanding three-year program where students explore and expand their leadership skills, voluntarily serve others, and experience a college environment. Students are invited to participate based upon a demonstrated commitment to academics and service. Under the direction of a full-time faculty member, students receive personal attention and direction. Students frequently highlight their SSI experiences on college applications and during interviews. The unique combination of service learning and leadership training make SSI a defining experience for student scholars. Acceptance into the Scholar Service Institute is contingent upon the following: Earning a cumulative weighted average of 95% and maintaining a cumulative weighted average of 90% throughout the Institute We need to teach young people not only how to use their intellectual gifts, but also to instill in them the will to serve others. It is important to show young people how to be their very best. - Eileen T. McMahon, Director of the Scholar Service Institute Enrolling in four of the ten Advanced Placement courses offered at st. Mary s: English, United States History, European History, World History, Calculus, Spanish, Italian, Biology, Environmental Science, and Computer Science Participating in seminar programs during Sophomore, Junior and Senior years, focusing on topics related to their summer reading Pursuing projects with mentors during each of the three years of the Institute Performing 30 hours of volunteer service Completing three seminars offered at local colleges and institutions in the student s selected area of interest, the Scholar Service Institute provides a formal structure to encourage our students to live up to their full potential

A Spirit of Collaboration Guidance Department The Guidance Department works with students to assist them in self understanding, as well as in understanding their relationship with their peers, and in achieving a greater sense of their social responsibility. The Peer Group Program utilizes the experience of senior students, who, under the supervision of the Guidance staff, work with freshmen students in their personal, spiritual, and relational development. As a college preparatory High School, the counselors work with students on making the best college decisions. Beginning in freshman year, students are encouraged to focus on their preparation for the SAT s. The PSAT s are given to both sophomores and juniors to identify areas that need improvement. The college search and application process are the main focus of junior and senior years. Students are encouraged to use the Naviance Program, an internet-based program designed for college searches, career searches as well as an interest inventory to identify areas of career choices. In the spring of junior year, the counselors set up individual meetings with juniors and parents/guardians to discuss the entire college process. The department also hosts a College Fair and a Financial Aid Evening. St. Mary s is focused on mind, body and most importantly spirit, so your child will develop a strong sense of spiritual identity and self to flourish in an academic environment and beyond. - Mary Lou de Venoge, Parent Gaels Parents Association The Gaels Parents Association serves as a fundraising organization in support of the administration, faculty, staff and most importantly, the students of St. Mary s High School. Through events and activities, the Association builds community between parents and the School. At a time when students are attempting to make greater strides toward their independence during high school years, the Gaels Parents Association is a vehicle where parents can maintain involvement in their children s lives. Gaels meetings are listed in the calendar at or the school handbook. Please send any questions to gaelsparentsassoc@stmary.ws.
