From previous ARISS contacts relationship with CNES educational office has been initiated. For 2016 Pesquet Mission, CNES educational office has been involve for: Selection process CNES involvement Selection of 6 French schools proposed by CNES Information on HAM Radio direct contact candidature Communication plan agreement (see next slide) Proxima mission Website :
1.1.1 ARISS contacts CNES involvement (1/3) CNES will allocate resources to support the program as follows: Support the application of 4 ARISS contacts requests and provide spatiobus (vehicle with specific tools for youth animation) and various educative resources. For the #20 other ARISS contacts in France: provide Proxima and spatial documentation Communication via and enseignantsmediateurs.cnes.fr ESA will allocate resources to support the program as follows: Support CNES with the organization of the labelled CNES ARISS contacts in France, and organize the contacts outside of France where applicable, as defined in chapter Communication via and other ESA sites.
1.1.1 ARISS Overview CNES involvement (2/3) Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) works with international space agencies to schedule radio contacts between school students and astronauts on board the International Space Station during their normal working day, with the goal of inspiring and enthusing the next generation of scientists, engineers, technicians and mathematicians. Schools and educational establishments will been invited to submit applications to host a space STEM event, targeting students and young people, with the aim of increasing awareness in the STEM subjec ts. The top three schools or education entities who are judged to provide the most beneficial opportunities around their event are added to a waiting list and, not withstanding International Space Station orbits and school availability, would be offered a chance to host a live radio link with Thomas Pesquet on the International Space Station. The final choice of schools invited to host each of these contacts will depend on the operational const raints (such as ISS orbits and crew availability), on school availability and other factors such as school facilities, skills and impact. As well as HAM radio, HAM video links will be put in place if the hardware is fully commissioned. Activity Lead: ESA with support from ARISS.
For the ARISS contacts in France, the organization of the contacts and the selection of the schools shall be undertaken by CNES, in collaboration with ARI SS, and in agreement with ESA. For ARISS contacts outside France, where applicable, ESA will be responsible for the organization as well as selection of the sites in collaboration with ARISS. Target Age Range The ARISS calls are primarily aimed at children aged Schedule The ARISS contacts are expected to take place throughout Increments 50 and 51. ARISS contacts should avoid school holidays. 15 Proxima mission - List of proposed schools/selected events ARISS Scheduled events - updated at 09:00 UTC Schools proposed for a telebridge contact in December ) EU# 375 EU Priority 6: Collège Michel Lotte, Le Palais, France, (telebridge via TBD), mentor F6ICS, to ) EU# 376 EU Priority 7: Collège Jean Charcot, Saint Malo, France, (telebridge via TBD), mentor F6ICS, to ) EU# 377 EU Priority 8: Ecole Communale de Saint Sylvestre, France, (elebridge via TBD), mentor F6ICS, to School proposed for a direct contact in December ) EU# 378 EU Priority 9: Lycée Montalembert, Toulouse, France, direct via F8IDR, mentor F6ICS, ESA/CNES event, to Question Team: Do you agree to do contacts during your adaptation period (mid November)? Astronaut answer: No, I don t know when I will really arrive on ISS. Question: Do you agree to do more than one contact per week? Astronaut answer: Yes on the principle, but I prefer wait about 1 month to be fully adapted and see how I can manage my time.
Proxima mission - Shared and continued contacts 1. Usually, an ARISS contact is set up for a single school, but shared events are welcome. If two or more schools agree to share the contact, the students of each school ask their questions alternatingly. Doing so, each school has equal chances as to the number of questions handled during the pass of the ISS (maximum 10 minutes). 2. When a contact is scheduled on Saturday morning, the astronaut can decide to perform the contact during two successive orbits. In that case, the sequence of questions will continue. The astronaut can announce his decision in advance or during the contact. Questions: Do you agree to do continued contacts? Do you agree to do Saturday contacts? Astronaut answer: Yes on the principle, but I prefer wait about 1 month to be fully adapted and see how I can manage my time.
Proxima mission - Proposed plan of scheduled contacts Usually, participating crew members agree to do one ARISS contact per week, but greater availability is highly appreciated. In the past, many astronauts accepted to do more than one ARISS contact per week. See the report here: For several reasons, there are weeks when no ARISS school contact can be scheduled. If the astronaut accepts more than one contact per week, the planned number of schools can be achieved. Presently, the proposed plan comprises: 4 ARISS events planned in December 2016, one per week, including one during the Christmas period. 10 ARISS events planned from January to mid May More schools are waiting and could be handled. Question: Do you agree to do contacts with schools during your free time also? Astronaut answer: Yes on the principle, but I prefer wait about 1 month to be fully adapted and see how I can manage my time. Question: Do you agree to stay in touch with the ARISS team during the mission? Astronaut answer: Yes.
Proxima mission HAM TV setup ARISS contacts are performed via the HAM Radio station in the Columbus Module (Ericsson Radio). During Tim Peake s mission, the UK astronaut performed more than 10 HAM TV enhanced contacts, HAM TV needs some extra work, not included in the audio only ARISS contact (5 preparation 10 contact). HAM TV setup requires: Camera preparation (battery and SD card). Down loading of recorded video. Question: Do you agree to do HAM TV events? Question: Do you agree to prepare for HAM TV in your free time (Camera setup, battery, etc.)? Astronaut answer: Yes.
Proxima mission - Random ARISS contacts Apart from scheduled ARISS school contacts, random radio contacts with amateur radio ground stations are much appreciated. Several astronauts performed random contacts: Bill Mc Arthur achieved DXCC from the ISS (Ham radio contacts with more than 100 countries). Mike Fincke and Douglas Wheelock established many random contacts with amateur ground stations. These astronauts and others have produced several videos of their amateur radio activities in orbit. See the video: Recently, Luca Parmitano established more than 200 QSO s from the ISS and described his experience in his ESA blog: Question: Do you agree to do some random radio contacts in your free time? Astronaut answer: Yes on the principle, but I prefer wait about 1 month to be fully adapted and see how I can manage my time.
