2 On behalf of the entire planning committee, we would like to welcome/invite you to the 73rd Annual Minnesota County Engineers Conference. We hope you find this year s program filled with pertinent and inspiring topics. Commissioner Charlie Zelle will join us Tuesday night for our banquet to celebrate the accomplishments of our colleagues and the contributions of our partners. On Wednesday, an hour of professional ethics training will be provided in addition to multiple presentations by our industry cohorts. Justin Weinberg, PA, will share real-life ethical dilemmas that we may face and present skills to resolve them. Thursday s keynote presentation by speaker Jody Janati, 101 Ways to Deal with People, will help us maintain our personal integrity through effective communication strategies that really work. Zelle, Commissioner and Chief Engineer, Minnesota Department of Transportation Wednesday, January 17, :30 a.m. Breakfast MORNING SESSION Presiding: Wayne Sandberg, Washington County 8:30 County Safety Approaches and Lessons Learned from Recent Project Work and Information Sharing Mark Vizecky, Minnesota Department of Transportation State Aid; Vic Lund, Saint Louis County; Rich Sanders, Polk County This session will include discussion on recent safety study updates including restricted intersections, and two engineers will present on lessons learned from recent FHWA local road safety peer exchanges. 9:30 Revised State Aid Road Design Standards Ted Schoenecker, Minnesota Department of Transportation State Aid; Wayne Sandberg, Washington County; Tony Hull, Transportation Consultant 10:15 Break The State Aid rules were recently revised and adopted at the end of This session will briefly highlight some of those revisions, discuss some of the different perspectives on how the revisions apply to different transportation needs, and provide a real-world application of the revised standards. 10:30 Bridge Repairs and Replacements Brian Keierleber, President, National Association of County Engineers This presentation will cover bridge repairs and replacements, including repairs to substructures, replacements with Ultra High Performance Concretes, a Press Brake Tub Girder Bridge, and developing material concepts such as internal-curing concrete and galvanizing elements for long life.

This session will provide information on current practices and give perspectives from the contractor side and the local agency side. 3:00 Next-Generation Maintenance Technologies: Weather-Savvy Roads, WebMDSS, and First-Person Vision Goggles Joe Campbell, Federal Highway Administration; Minnesota Department of Transportation Office of Maintenance Representative MnDOT will share their work with the Every Day Counts (EDC-4) partnership on an effort to allow agencies to be proactive in managing the surface transportation system and providing consistent and actionable public messages ahead of and during adverse weather events. WebMDSS functionality updates and FHWA s application of FPV drones for bridge inspections will also be presented in this session. 4:00 Local Road Research Board (LRRB) Update Renae Kuehl and Mike Marti, SRF Consulting Group, Inc. The MN Local Road Research Board has recently developed many great new products that you can benefit from! 7 Who Should Attend The Minnesota County Engineers Conference is intended for county engineers, assistant county engineers, and retired county engineers. Registration and Fees Registration for the annual conference is open to all Minnesota county engineers and assistant county engineers. The registration fee is $190 and includes all sessions and instructional materials. Please register online at ccaps.umn.edu/mcea, or fill out the attached registration form and fax it to or mail it to the address indicated. Retired county engineers are invited to register and pay $85 to attend the Wednesday and Thursday program, receiving continuing education credits for both days. Cancellation Policy If you need to cancel your registration, a refund of your fee minus a $30 processing fee will be made if notice is received by January 9, Cancellations after this date are not eligible for a refund. The University reserves the right to cancel the event if necessary and, in this case, would issue a full refund. Attire Casual attire is welcome. Location and Accommodations The conference will be held at Cragun s Resort and Hotel on Gull Lake. Participants are responsible for reserving room and meal packages directly with Cragun s. Reservation forms are available on the website at ccaps.umn.edu/mcea. We recommend reserving your room early, as rooms may fill to capacity. Continuing Education Units Participants who attend the entire conference will receive 1.2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education program. A CEU certificate will be sent to each participant after the conference. A permanent record of CEUs earned will be maintained by the University of Minnesota Office of Admissions and Records Transcript Office.
