Among the many themes for the month of January, it s National Glaucoma Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization or WHO, Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. The National Eye Institute Project estimates there are more than 3 million people in the United States and over 60 million people worldwide living with glaucoma. It is estimated that this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase! Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning and is the leading cause of preventable blindness. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. Early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease. The best way to protect your sight from glaucoma is to get a comprehensive eye examination. Then, if you have glaucoma, you can begin treatment immediately. If it s been a while since your last eye exam, you may want to speak with your health provider to schedule a visit soon.
